Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! It is so beautiful out my window as everything is covered with so much snow. This morning I made a big casserole and worked on cleaning more cupboards. This afternoon we are going several places before we walk and I suspect Al has Culver’s in mind too!

  Every morning when we awaken, we have a choice to make if we are going to follow God’s leading or if we are going to do our own thing. Maybe we can picture doors set before us of all sorts of possibilities but there is one door that is God’s divine will and we must decide if we are going to choose that.
  Yesterday I wrote down in my journal, “learn to be a servant”, for I had just read the scripture from Mark 10:43-44 where Jesus said to His disciples, “But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.“ James and John had asked Jesus for the best places in his kingdom and Jesus had given them this answer. Now if we are a slave, we do what our master tells us to do, and we don’t argue or fret we simply do it.
   I wondered yesterday what the Lord was going to ask me to do when I got that scripture. I imagined something difficult. But first I thought of a request given me from a friend to pick up her package at Kohl’s for her as she was sick.  If the roads were clear that is the one simple thing, I knew the Lord wanted me to do. As soon as Bible Study was over, I went to Kohl’s and got her package and then that door opened up for multiple blessings. There were sales of 70% off all over the store and I thought of my friend in Assisted Living and got several items in her size. I got more presents for others as well and when I went to check-out, I not only got the items at 70%off but the woman behind me offered that the clerk click her code for 20% more on my purchases…Plus I am left with Kohl dollars for the future. That one simple door of obedience swung wide open to more than I could imagine. I thanked the Lord all the way home!
    Do you think that we often miss the blessings God has for us because we refuse to go through the door He has waiting for us? It doesn’t always result in sales and surprises but even in the hard tasks He promises to enable us and to be with us. We don’t know where it will all lead but He only asks for our obedience. May we choose Him and His ways and the rest is up to Him.
Challenge for today: Purpose to listen to the Holy Spirit promptings and obey.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a good day and keeping warm. We have lots of snow but Al got to men’s group this morning and I just got back from Aldi’s.  I baked cookies for Al and am doing more cleaning of cupboards. This afternoon we have Bible study and we are going to start the book of Ephesians when we finish I Peter today.

  How wonderful that our Heavenly Father did not choose to keep himself distant but wants a close relationship with each of us. He loves to hear our voice and to accompany us throughout our day…that means through even the most difficult things that come our way. He loves us unconditionally ever since we were in our mother’s womb. His desire is not so much about what we can do for Him, but simply being with Him.
As I was reflecting on my own relationship with Him, the song came to mind:
  “Just a closer walk with Thee
   Grant it, Lord if you please
   Daily walking close with Thee
   Let it be, dear Lord; Let it be.
   
   I am weak, but Thou are strong
   Jesus Keep me from all wrong
   I’ll be satisfied as long
   As I can walk, dear Lord, close with Thee.”
 The song goes on to say He is the One we can share all our burdens with. There is nothing too hard for Him that He will see us through. Sometimes He also sends other believers to encourage us and help us if we fall.  How wonderful that the Lord gives us close friends on our spiritual journeys that if one falls down the other is there to pick up. As it says in Eccl. 4:12 (NIV), “Though one may be over powered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.”
   Let us remember this as we begin a New Year, that we don’t walk alone on our journey through life. We are not orphans.  We have a Heavenly Father who is as close as our very breath, and we may also have other pilgrims on the journey to accompany us. We are so very rich and blessed!
Challenge for today: Spend some alone time with your Heavenly Father and share your heart with Him.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are staying warm on this cold snowy day. When it is inclement weather I love to clean. I have been cleaning out the freezer and bottom cupboards and drawers in the kitchen this morning.This afternoon we have craft time, and today I’m quite sure we will be walking in the underground.

  Our mouths can definitely get us in trouble if we are not careful. Maybe we get frustrated when our plane has been canceled and spout off to someone that has no control over the circumstance; or could be we respond to a rude person with the same kind of negative attitude that they express to us and just let the words fly off of our tongue. Even when we don’t say it out loud verbally, if we respond on Facebook with lots of exclamations and verbiage, it shows we are heated. But is that how followers of Christ should respond or do we choose a better way, one more like the One who is Love?
  Often there is a short space of time after we encounter a difficult situation that we can decide if we are going to respond from our carnal self or if it is going to be from our new nature in Christ. We’d like to say it is all the latter, but if you are like me, there are times we fail. It is good to remember that how we respond can have a profound effect on the other person. Instead of arguing, we can ask them to explain more where they are coming from and seek to understand the whole picture. Or maybe we have to give the person a pass as they have just had a horrendous experience and it is amazing that they are still standing. God may use our more tender response to give them a new perspective and fresh hope. The Jesus way is like Paul said in Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
  When we send up a quick prayer, the Lord can lead us to say and do the right thing at the time that can have a profound effect on the situation and on our own hearts. Instead of an angry response, a kind reply could open the door for the person to see things in a clear new way. I caught myself on Christmas day as I was frustrated that it took 2 hours for the receptionist at the front hotel desk to give us a room, even though I had a message on my phone that gave her the information she needed. I wanted to give a curt response, but I felt the Holy Spirit telling me to be patient and just sit with a book as Al and I waited. Later that evening I asked her how she was doing as she had a long shift and looked tired. I hoped I hadn’t made her day frustrating but instead that she saw a flicker of His light.
  Challenge for today: Stop before you speak in an unkind way and be open to how the Lord would have you respond.

Dear Ones,
  Hope you wake today with a sense of joy and peace. Did you have a good New Years and make it to midnight? We were fast asleep! This morning I hope to get downstairs for coffee and choc covered raspberries and this afternoon we have friends coming! The question this week is, are you aware of things you need to let go of and other things that you want to embrace in this new year?

  I love new beginnings as it gives me a sense of a fresh start. It often means we need to let go of something in order to enter into the new. As we have entered into the new year, we need to lay aside those things that will weigh us down and lead us away from the Lord, rather than closer to Him.
   Debbie McDaniel writes on Crosswalk.com about toxic attitudes that we need to let go of if we are to have a rich and blessed 2023. Most of the things she shared really have to do with battles of our old self, for the flesh doesn’t die easily. The first toxic attitude she mentions is apathy as we can get ho-hum in our relationship with the Lord and get caught up in other things that take our attention away from Him. Instead, every day it is vital that we spend time in the Word and in prayer if we are to grow and not to wither.
   Pride always seems to pop its head up and life isn’t all about us, but all about the Lord. Let us choose the road of humility that draws us closer to Him instead of me, me, me that puts us at a distance.
   We must also let go of toxic worry and fear that can rob us of our joy and freedom. Let us remember that the Lord is all powerful and greater is He that is within us than he that is in the world. We are weak but He is strong!
   Anger can definitely be toxic and it may come out in harsh words and looks and putting others down. Instead, we need to be loving and encouraging in our relationships and trust that the Lord will change others as that is not our job.
    Addictive behavior has to go also or it will control our lives. Drugs and alcohol may bring a short high but will not bring lasting satisfaction…only a life founded in the Lord.  
    Debbie mentions materialism as we can get our focus on riches, rather than the Lord. Some of the happiest people I know aren’t rich in the world’s goods but rich in love and faith. God is our provider, and our hearts are to be set on Him.
    Unforgiveness is another toxic attitude we need to let go of or it can ruin us if we hang on to it. We may not always feel like forgiving but it is always the right thing to do. We must choose to let go and let the Lord restore and heal in His timing.
   Let us all begin the New Year with an open receptive heart and dump those toxic attitudes for a desire to follow the Lord!
Challenge for today: Confess your old toxic attitudes and live in His forgiveness with a fresh desire to follow Him.

Hope you had a great weekend and rang in the New Year. Not so happy for the Vikings though! This morning I made egg dishes and then going to go to my Exercise class.

  What kind of a message do we send out to others by how we live our lives?   Do we often display behavior that is not Christ-like and cause them to question if we are part of God’s family? Sometimes our actions give the wrong impression to others and leave them wondering if we really know the Lord.
  Yesterday I went to church and wore a green sweater without giving it any serious thought. While I was a greeter and handing out bulletins, one gal said, “So you’re wearing green today?!” I thought, well why not, as it is a Christmas color and wondered why she commented. But it wasn’t long before a couple came in wearing Viking shirts and then it hit me that I was wearing a Packer color. I never thought of that when I got dressed that morning. Later our Pastor, who was wearing a Packer green shirt, commented on my sweater and wanted to take a picture of the two of us in green, which he could possibly use to blackmail me in the future. What I was wearing did not display who I am on the inside for I am a big Viking fan not a Packer fan, although I have been known to cheer for them when they are not playing the Vikings!
  Later I thought of how our behavior should display how we are on the inside. If we belong to the Lord, our words, our dress, and our actions should all reflect that to others each day. If we are honest, we will probably have to admit it isn’t always so. We can’t live life the Jesus way on our own but we have the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us. We need the Lord’s strength and I was encouraged as I read Paul’s word’s today from Phil 4:13 (Amplified), “I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me (I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency).” We will fail if we go in our own power and strength, for only by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit can we display His love and walk the walk. May our outer life reflect Jesus!
Challenge for today: Ask for strength to live in such a way that others see Jesus in you!

Dear Ones,
Hope you have are having a good New Years Eve day. We just got home from Applebee’s as we got a gift card to celebrate there. Yesterday we ended up going to the lake and saw friends and had supper with Ann’s family. This morning I cleaned the apartment and made Al a hot pizza dip that he likes as he watches the games. I’m sure we will not make it up to midnight tonight!

 A New Year is almost here and it is a good time to reflect on what God has done in this past year and to praise Him and celebrate that. Then it is wise to move on and make room for the new things He has in store for us if we are willing to let go of the old. 
 Our friends are moving out of the split-level home they have known for 21 years, to enter into a Senior Living apartment. It is a huge process to let go of the many things that will not fit into the new apartment and they have been working on that task this past year. In January they will have to let go of the old familiar and enter into a whole new way of living and that takes a great deal of adjusting. We know about that from experience as we did the same thing almost 4 1/2 years ago. But in looking back now, I think of all the blessings we would have missed if we had not taken that step of faith.
  Each of us will experience new things in 2023 as we desire to walk closer in His presence and to know the Lord in deeper ways.  What He did in the past was wonderful, but there are always new and wondrous things awaiting us. We don’t have to worry about His provision for He will give us all that we need in abundance. His generosity exceeds ours. As the apostle Paul said in Phil. 4:19 (NRSV), “And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to the riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” We need to open our hearts and our minds and spirits and simply trust Him. We have the Holy Spirit to guide us and to point out the path we are to take each day as we walk in the light that He gives us. It says in Isaiah 30:21 that when we are open to the Spirit, we will hear a word behind us telling us the way to go, whether to the right or to the left. Let us experience and enter in to all the new He has for us in 2023, as we let go of the old.
  Challenge for today: End the year in praise for all that the Lord has done, and then enter 2023 with faith and openness to the new!

Dear Ones,
Happy New Year’s weekend to you! I have been trying to clean out the old to make ready for the New Year. I went through our cards and want to do the finances next. This morning I made Oh Henry bars and a veggie stirfry and shopped. We do love to still go for our walk each day.

   As we grow in the Lord and learn to decrease and for Him to increase, many things will no longer trip us up that use to. If we are attacked or maligned by someone, we can let it go and respond with God’s love instead. It takes a lot of decreasing and dying to our own ego, but it is possible when His love gives us the grace to respond more as the Lord would have us. 
   As Paul said in Galatians 2:20- (Message), “I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not ‘mine,’ but it is lived by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
   Recently my cousin called and shared something that happened to her family. They got something in the mail regarding the cost of her mom’s care in Assisted Living. It was going to increase because of the next level of care she was needing. But there was only one problem; her mom had died more than a month before and we were at her funeral. It was a time of celebration of her life lived for the Lord and for others. Now Linda had a choice if she would give the nursing home a piece of her mind or if she would respond in love. This is what she wrote and you can determine which way she took.  
 “Pioneer Care Staff,
I am writing you to inform you that my mom, Rhoda____, died on November 8th, at your Care facility. You sent us a letter that you were increasing mom’s level of care to the highest level, which will increase the amount you have to pay. Well, I can assure you that my mom is receiving the highest level of care possible. She is up in heaven at the feet of Jesus. My only hope is that she doesn’t have to cook or clean, she’s really good at both. My mom was an awesome, loving, caring, faithful woman. By the way, mom loved it there. And, thank you to anyone that took time to wash mom up ad keep her clean. That took time to put her wig on, and straighten up her room. God bless you all who are ambitious enough to work.”
  So far no response from the nursing home!
Challenge for today: Pray before responding to difficult situations and ask for God’s words and guidance.

Dear Ones, 
It’s warming up and hope you are having a good day. This morning I put away our Christmas decorations and presents, and went downstairs for cookies on a stick. This afternoon we have Bible Study and we usually have a good number that come and also share. 
Devotions from Judy’s heart
  At this Christmas season we focus on the coming of Immanuel, whose name means God with us. Just think that Jesus left His heavenly home in glory to become one of us and to die for us to receive forgiveness. It is hard to take in and His very name gives us the assurance that He will not abandon us but is always, always with us. What a comfort that is when we get hit by difficult circumstances and go through things we don’t understand and can’t make sense of.
   When we commit our lives into His hands, we can rest assured that we don’t walk alone but He is in our midst, His presence is right there with us. So many lack that assurance today as loneliness is at an all-time high and the suicide rate is soaring.
   I am reminded of Moses words, just before his death, that he spoke to Joshua to encourage him to go in and take the land that God had promised His people. He first of all tells him not to be afraid because God was going to go with Him. He said in Deut.31:6 (God’s Word), “Be strong and courageous. Don’t tremble! Don’t be afraid of them! The Lord your God is the One who is going with you. He won’t abandon you or leave you.” That is a word for us also, for the Lord will never abandon us and He can give us a song to sing in the darkest night.
    Like the song goes, “There’s within my heart a melody/Jesus whispers sweet and low/ Fear not, I am with thee, peace, be still/ in all of life’s ebb and flow.” And then verse 4 says, “Tho’ He leads thro’ waters deep/ trials fall across the way/ Tho’ sometimes the path seems rough and steep/ See His footprints all the way.” But then the chorus rings out, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus/ Sweetest name I know/ Fills my every longing/ keeps me singing as I go.”
  May the Lord give us a song to sing even in the night when things are the darkest for Immanuel is with us.
Challenge for today: Thank the Lord as you start your day that He is with you every moment of this day.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! We enjoyed time with relatives over Christmas and now it is good to be home again too.This morning I am going to Aldi’s and my exercise class and hope to walk the trail this afternoon. 
Devotions from Judy’s heart
  God wants His way in our lives and of course, His way is always, always best. I thought of the song that you have probably sung, “Have thine own way, Lord!/ Have thine own way/ Thou art the Potter/ I am the clay/ Mold me and make me/ after Thy will/ while I am waiting, yielded and still.”  Maybe we can picture ourselves on the potter’s wheel and know He is shaping us into a vessel for Him. We don’t know what it will look like, but at times we may feel like we are crushed down and have to be reshaped in certain areas of our lives.
  I have been in the book of Genesis in my devotions and am reading about Joseph and all he went through. I am quite sure he felt like his clay was crumbled when he was 17 after he unwisely told his brothers of his 2 dreams of the sheaves and the sun, moon, and 11 stars bowing down to him.  His overconfidence and bragging cost him many hardships, pain, even imprisonment, but through those crushing times, he let God form Him and became a man of integrity who God used to save many in the time of famine. He had a choice though, if he would let his adverse circumstances level him, or if he would have a positive response and learn from them. He chose the latter and others recognized God’s was with him.
   Like Paul says in Romans 9:20-21 (God’s Word), “Can an object that was made say to its maker, ’Why did you make me like this?’ A potter has the right to do whatever he wants with his clay. He can make something for a special occasions or something for everyday use from the same lump of clay.”  We do well to let Him work our clay into His desired shape. When the Lord sees our imperfections, He has to crush it down to a lump and begin the process of reshaping again. But if we resist His will, we experience pressure in our lives and need to come to repentance. When we accept what He is forming us into, the pressure is relieved and He makes us into a vessel that He has chosen for us.
   God is sovereign and may we remember that He is the potter and we are the clay.
Challenge for today: When you sense you are resisting the Lord’s work in your life, yield to Him and let Him mold and shape you into something beautiful.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a glorious Christmas! We are home now from the cities and had a wonderful time with about 35 relatives for two days. So thankful as we all had good roads, a wonderful time together, lots of sharing, games, shopping, and just being together. I came home feeling so full of blessings from above!

Christmas is a time of giving for God gave His very best gift by sending His Son. But every day is a time for giving if our hearts overflow with gratitude and thankfulness. Today I came across a couple verses in Proverbs that speak of giving. I know the Lord doesn’t need our gifts for He owns everything, but He wants our hearts to be open to give to others as unto Him.
I read the from Proverbs 11:24-25 (Message), “The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller. The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.” As I read these two verses I thought of a friend of mine whom I recently visited and whose life is blessed as she knows the joy of giving. It isn’t that she has a lot to give, for she doesn’t, but she wants to give what she has. All year long she thinks of what she can give at Christmas to those who give her care and those around her who need care. Since she has very limited sight and is confined to her wheelchair, she has to be very creative. We both pray that she will be able to give each person on her list something special. This year it was jewelry for the women and warm socks for the men on her list. She couldn’t rest until all the gifts were wrapped and addressed so she could give them out. She found so much joy in giving, especially to those who would not otherwise receive any gift for Christmas. When I arrived to see her, she and a friend had a table set up in her room with pretzels and eggnog that she was going to serve to the aids and friends. She gives without expecting anything in return.
How opposite the world’s way is of holding on to things, and saying mine, mine, mine! People want more and more possessions and run out of room to even store them. Really, who need a house for two people that is bigger than a hotel? But God’s way is for us to give not only of our possessions, but our time and our energy too. The paradox is that when we are generous we become satisfied and richer, but when we are stingy we become poorer and we just keep wanting more without being satisfied.
Let us be giving and generous and not withhold what God prompts us to give.
Challenge for today: Gladly give to someone in need the next time the Holy Spirit prompts you.
