Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a great day. This morning I made egg dishes and got out our decorations for Christmas, since we are going to be gone for Thanksgiving. This afternoon we are going to have a Praise and Thanksgiving sing-along instead of our regular Bible Study. Afterwards I am going to take a friend shopping. The sun is out today and so beautiful with the snow out my window as I write.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
God uses each of our lives to help make known something about His nature. Because we are each unique and not like anyone else in the world, we carry within us something that will display a part of Him to others around us. We are all given particular gifts and talents that he uses to also point others to Him. We don’t need to compare our gifts with others or belittle our gifts for each of us have unique qualities that He can use; it is important that we play our part, which really matters.
Through us the Lord can bring healing to others. Perhaps we are one who carefully listens to others and takes their needs, together with them, to the cross. Maybe we are usually upbeat and can bring a ray of sunshine to lighten the darkness of one who is depressed. Or we are a truth-teller that speaks out what is wrong that it can be delt with.
It says in I Peter 2:9-10 that we are chosen instruments to do His work and speak out for Him. God works through us to bless others, and often we are not even aware of it
Have you noticed that the more you give out to others, the more joy you have? Those that hide their candle under a bushel or neglect to do the works of love, miss out. Jesus died so we would no longer live for ourselves bur for Him. II Cor.5:15
It’s important to listen to the Lord so we can be doing His works in His timing and set aside our own self-will. Jesus wants to shine through us and as the children’s song goes, “Jesus wants me for a sunbeam to shine for Him each day. In every way try to please Him, at home, at school, at play…I will ask Jesus to help me, to keep my heart from sin. Ever reflecting His goodness and always shine for Him.” May others know Jesus better because we beam a part of His loving nature to those around us.
Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to use you in new ways to help others know Him and love Him.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope that you have a peaceful day. There is more snow falling today and winter is really here. This morning I did food prep and made Al’s favorite cookies and soon going to my exercise class. Then Craft time and tonight is Bible study and maybe a walk inbetween on the trail.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
When Al and I travel we like to go to monasteries and to spend time in the quietness there. We have also done personal retreats in the past and taken time to enjoy silence with those who have left the noise of the world to draw closer to Christ. They have renounced possessions, relationships, and even themselves to be possessed by the Lord. We found no TV’s blaring or cell phones going off, but a holy atmosphere where Jesus is the focus and hearts are seeking to hear Him.
I read an article recently by Andrew Arndt about the desert fathers and mothers who left their comfortable confines to discover how to live for the love of God and neighbor, and to renounce those things that come against God’s kingdom. We have much to learn from their example. What is so evident first of all is the emphasis on a clean heart and to rid ourselves of everything that comes contrary to love for God and others. Love is God’s way and it takes shape in Christian community. Even those in the dessert lived under a common discipline with a superior and often met on Sundays for common worship. Abba Anthony the Great said, “Our life and our death is with our neighbor. If we gain our brother, we have gained God, but if we scandalize our brother, we have sinned against Christ.” We may think we are so loving but avoid getting close to others, even in our churches. We can’t keep people at arm’s length if we are to be known and also to express His love to others. John says in I John 4:12, 16, “But if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us, for God is Love and whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”
Desert fathers also teach us that love must be willing to lose. They choose poverty which is voluntary and means letting go of all that we possess. I use to give gifts at Christmas to three nuns we knew at the monastery but I also realized they wouldn’t keep it to themselves that it would be shared and given to others. We must all let go of what we possess and give what we cannot keep to gain that which we cannot lose.”.
Challenge for today: Express God’s love in a new way today.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a day of joy and some fun too. Al is going to get fitted for a crown this morning and this afternoon we are invited to friend’s for fellowship and prayer..and always a delicious dessert.Emoji The question for this week is, when is the last time you had a wonderful fun day full of joy and laughter and came away feeling lighter? What was the occasion?
Devotions from Judy’s heart
We have a Heavenly Father who is not only strong and mighty but also fun. So often we miss that part of Him and can become overly serious, so much so, that we feel guilty having a good time. But I have always thought that as His children we should have more fun than those in the world as we have a clear conscience and are forgiven.
I was reading an article by Pastor Mark Roberts about how we have a fun God. Yes, He is holy but He is also the One who gives us deep joy and laughter. When Jesus walked on the earth, he went to celebrations and even provided the best wine at the wedding. And the Father of the prodigal didn’t hesitate to have a super party with feasting when His lost son returned.
Wise King Solomon said in Eccl. 2:24-26 (ESV), “There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, for apart from Him who can eat or who can have enjoyment.”   We have so much to celebrate for the Lord has filled our hearts with His joy.
Recently we have had birthday parties, weddings and soon we will be going to Kurt’s for Thanksgiving.  There are so many occasions in life to celebrate and enjoy and to have fun. How do we expect non-believers to be attracted to the Lord if life is dull and boring? King David knew that true joy is found in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 16:11, and after all, He created us and knows us best.
We might ask ourselves today if we need more fun in our lives and what things can we change that hinder us from a full, fun life? We better get ready for one day, as it says in Revelation19, we will be present at the greatest party of all times, the Marriage Feast of the Lamb!
Challenge for today: Ask the Holy Spirit to free your heart for more fun and joy in the Lord.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a great weekend! What an exciting unbelieveable Viking game, as they won in overtime. Today we are going to go the new Christian school for a tour and for lunch, as we have prayed for the start of this brand new school.
Next Monday will be the celebration of my aunt’s life but will share some thoughts in my devotional today of God’s grace in her life.
 Devotions from Judy’s heart
God’s grace is so indescribable, that we can never fully explain it, but simply receive it. Like the song goes: “Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace/ Freely bestowed on all who believe/You that are longing to see His face/ Will you this moment Hs grace receive?” Grace is a precious gift from God and it is unmerited kindness, undeserved favor that transforms our lives.
Sometimes we know people that are so full of grace and extend that grace to all those around them. I think of my 97year-old aunt who recently went home to the Lord and how God’s grace was so evident in her life. I was a small child when she became a nurse and married my uncle who was a Pastor, and in my young eyes, I thought she was so beautiful!                                                                 Rhoda’s life had many challenges but through them all she became stronger in faith.  She left nursing to be a stay-at-home mom when her children were born, and a Pastor’s wife. Lest you think a Pastor’s wife is a glamourous life with attention from the congregation, it also involves filling in all the roles that people fail to fill. One time my uncle was about to begin a funeral service and realized no one had taken care of the lunch following the service. So, Rhoda had to quick go home and make sandwiches etc. and supply food for all who came. Later, she laughs about it as par for the course and goes on as she always seemed to.
Grace helps us to not take things so serious and even to laugh at ourselves. My uncle built a Bible camp on the lake for kids to come to in the summer. Also, our relatives gathered many times there to spend a weekend sharing, playing, and eating together. We often had skits and Rhoda had a wonderful sense of humor and could impersonate people which caused much laughter. She did Tammy Faye with her dog and cracked everyone up.
Another time she and her daughter had car trouble on their way home on a cold night. Their car quit in front of the Purple Palace tavern and they had to go in and ask for help. As Rhoda was sitting up to the bar, all she could think about was if someone from the congregation would see her there. Neither Rhoda nor Linda had money to pay the men who helped them as they had just given all their money to the church in the offering,  Linda offered to put a thank you in their town’s Review about the men at the bar who helped them but Rhoda declined. More laughter!
There were also difficult situations in life when God’s grace seemed to pour into her and she had to hang on tightly to the Lord in faith. She also extended mercy and grace to others that covered all offenses. As it says in Eph. 2:8-9 (ESV), “For by grace you are saved through faith And it is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  May each of us be thankful recipients of God’s grace but also extend it to all, for it is a gift of God.
Challenge for today: If someone has hurt you, be the first to share God’s grace.

Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

November 12, 2022

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying the weekend. Looks like good weather for the hunters! I am soon going to Women’s Bible study at church and have been studying and doing food prep before I go.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I wonder if we realize how much we need the Lord and His forgiveness daily. I was reading what Jessica Brodie, author and editor, wrote on Crosswalk about coming to the realization of how she was putting herself before God and hiding her true nature from others as well. She was a rule follower and considered herself a nice person, although she knew she wasn’t perfect. But she came to know she needed God’s forgiveness, as all of us sin daily and fall short.
Jesus did not die for “nice” people but for those who know they are imperfect and sinful and in need of grace, which includes everyone. We are lost without Him and the apostle John says if we say we are without sin we only fool ourselves and are not living in reality.
We might ask ourselves if we are mindful that we are sinful, and need cleansing every day or if we compare ourselves with others whose sin might be more open for all to see.  It does not matter if miss the mark by a little or a lot, the end result is the same. I think of it as drowning and whether it is in 12 feet of water or 2 feet of water, it makes no difference for we experience death.
When we have known the Lord for some time, we may get flippant about sin and put other persons or things before the Lord. But we need to see our daily need for confession and forgiveness and to remember what it cost Jesus. Often at night before I go to sleep, I review the day and am made aware of where I have blown it, sinned is a more accurate word. I see where I have placed myself first instead of Him and my eyes get opened to my selfishness etc.  When we ask the Holy Spirit to reveal our sin so we can repent, He is only too happy to show us that we may be forgiven and made new. It is a good thing and we can just picture Him cleansing us wiping us clean.
Like the song by Julie Johnston goes, “Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin!”
The apostle Paul says in Ephesians 1:7 (ESV),” In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”
Challenge for today: Ask for a heart cleansing and then thank the Lord for His grace.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! During the night we had a bit of snow and just a little remained this morning, but we know more is coming soon.  I made Pork chops and Spanish rice this morning  and cleaned the apt and the last of the blinds. This afternoon both Al and I are getting our haircuts and we have only to walk to the building next door. Emoji
Devotions from Judy’s heart
The Lord is sovereign and wants to be the center of our lives, not the periphery. Too often we go about our busy work day and time spent with family, and then try to fit God in: but instead, we should be the ones fitting into Him. It is the Lord that really matters and there is nothing more important than knowing Him in a deep way. If we give Him our best, then everything else falls into proper place and our work becomes ministry and our family becomes a place of opportunity to put into practice God’s love.
Life on earth is short and one day we will be ushered into heaven and as it says in Psalm 16:11 (NRSV), “You show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” So much awaits us one day but for now we will find joy as we live in faith and for what really counts. We can’t begin to fathom the joy that will be ours one day to actually live in the fullness of His presence and see His glory.
If we think about it, we can’t possibly separate the secular from the sacred, that is our everyday life from spiritual things: it is one and the same for all of our life is sacred. We can’t compartmentalize our lives and reserve only part of it for the Lord for He wants all of it. That includes what we do with our time, how we spend our money, for it is all for His glory. One day we will live in a perfect place and experience a perfect life with the One who is perfect. No more sorrow, no more pain, for we will be forever in His presence and experience the fullness of joy.
Challenge for today: Invite the Lord to be the center of your life and let your life revolve around him.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you have sunshine within, even though it is overcast and raining. Al is at Men’s group and I just baked choc chip cookies so the house is full of good aroma. I plan to go down for Donut Day and then we have Bible Study this afternoon.
My aunt of 97 years old went home to be with the Lord and would appreciate prayers for the family. She was so loved by all.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Sometimes the Lord has little surprises for us in our day and it’s like a way of letting us know He sees us and is close with us. I had such an experience last Saturday as I went with my daughter to an Art Fair. We went early and since my daughter is into rock collecting, we went first to the basement of the school where there were displays of rock jewelry.
We felt sorry for the vendors/artists as we saw only a few people; so, I bought a pair of earrings and Ann bought a bracelet. I also saw a necklace of a pink rock wrapped around by thick golden wire that curled into swirls that held it in place, but still open enough to feel the rock. I mentioned to the gal who made it how lovely it was and I wondered if my friend who we walk with would like that necklace for Christmas. Vickie has Alzheimer’s and likes to fidget with things and it is a color she is fond of. We visited together and then Ann and I went to second floor and to an art exhibit room. All of a sudden, this same vender showed up there and told me if I wanted that rock necklace, she would cut the price in half. I quickly said, “Sold!”
I told her more about my friend and how I had also prayed for a gift for her birthday and was led to a lovely art form of a woman in blue that exemplified who my friend is still inside even though her mind is fading. I felt like maybe this rock necklace would also be symbolic of the beautiful person Vickie is inside and yet her mind feels like it is encased in a cage and not set free. But one day it will be! As I shared with the vendor, she said that she had goosebumps and tears came to her eyes by my story. I went downstairs and bought the necklace which was placed in a pink lace bag for Vickie’s Christmas. And an added touch of the Lord was that the necklace is long enough to go over Vickie’s head as she could never do the clasp. I felt the Lord smile!
Let us not miss the surprises the Lord may send us throughout our day. It could be a specific word we need to hang on to or an actual gift like Vickie’s. Like it says in James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift descends from above, from the Father of lights with whom there is no change or a shadow of variation.”
Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to help you recognize His many surprises for you and give Him thanks.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
It is a cool day and dark and raining out my window. Predictions are for rain the rest of the week and maybe snow too! Today I hope to get to Aldi’s and then to my exercise class and this afternoon to Crafts and tonight to Bible Study. Al is preaching this morning next door at Assisted Living.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How can we improve in our relationships with others? Even when we have a quite a good relationship with our friend or spouse, there is always room for improvement and growth to bond us even closer. Jennifer Waddle writes about ways of serving our spouse but I think it applies to everyone around us as well. I will share some of her thoughts along with my own.
Sometimes we minister to others by just a smile or an understanding look that we give our loved one. It can say more than words and lets them know we understand and are on the same team. Al and I pick up each other’s cues across the room and usually know what we mean without words.
Jennifer suggests giving to other what we’d like to receive. If we feel like we are lacking for attention and affection give that to them. We might be surprised by the fallout from that! Like Jesus said in Matt. 7:12 (ESV), “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.”
We can also be quick to think of ways to bless others and be a helper in areas of need. Sometimes we can relieve the pressure they are under by simply listening to them well and giving encouragement and affirmation. But as we listen, let us not have one eye on our phones but rather give eye contact and ask questions etc.
Togetherness is so good but we also need to give one another space and breathing room. Most every day Al and I share as we walk on the trail but there are some days he needs to walk alone and comes back with new insights.
We also need to notice one another and give compliments and acknowledge how they are a blessing to us. It is helpful to know their love language to discover how they receive love and it is not likely to be the same as ours. If theirs is words of affirmation then it is important to give compliments and words that build up. If their love language is gifts then look for tangible gifts to give spontaneously. Or if it is acts of service than do physical helps that take thought and energy. Perhaps it is quality time, then schedule dates, and meaningful times to be together. Or if it is physical touch, then give lots of hugs, hold hands etc.
With all our loved ones let us take time to grow closer in our relationship with them and the Lord.
Challenge for today: Serve a loved one today in a special way that would be meaningful to them.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

November 8, 2022

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a wonderful day. It is quite cool and windy out today  but hope everyone gets out to vote. Al and I are going shortly! Not sure if I will get downstairs for coffee and choc covered raspberries today as we don’t know if there will be long lines of voters.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Prayer is so powerful and sometimes we just have to persist in prayer as we don’t yet see the answer. It is easier to give up after spending some time to pray about a particular concern of our hearts, but we are never to give up. I distinctly remember the last month of each pregnancy and how long it seemed before each baby was birthed. I felt like it was never going to happen!  Maybe we feel that way about certain prayers we have prayed for months and even years and we begin to doubt.
But be encouraged the Lord hears every one of our prayers and we are to persistent in expectant faith. Like the woman who wore out the judge as she kept coming to him about her case, the judge finally gave her justice simply because he was tired of her pleas.  Unlike the judge, the Lord is quick to hear our heart’s cry the first time and ready to answer.
I must confess there have been times I thought God had forgotten about my prayer concern since I saw nothing outwardly happening. That is not a good way to determine His actions though, as He begins His work in the heart, where only He truly sees. For example, when someone comes to the Lord, it didn’t just all happen that moment but it might have begun long ago with someone’s prayers for him. Then it could have continued when a remark was made by a friend sharing about God’s intervention in his life.  What followed might have been a sense of the Holy Spirit convicting him and finally He is ready to make a decision to follow the Lord. Everyone God uses to plant seeds is important.
I especially love when I hear those instances when God uses even a little child to bring his daddy or mommy to the Lord. It is all a work of the Holy Spirit.
May we not give up too soon but persist and have expectant faith for what God can do. Let us heed Jesus’ word to the persistent widow in Luke 18:1, to always pray and not lose heart.
Challenge for today: Confess any lack of faith for a concern that you have, and renew your trust in the Lord to answer in His timing and His way.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

November 7, 2022

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful weekend and got refreshed and refueled for the week. We enjoyed watching the Vikings game yesterday and win in the last seconds of the game.Emoji This morning I plan to do food prep and go to my exercise class. Yesterday was so windy we had to walk in the underground.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Sometimes it is hard to hear the Lord when the noise of the world seems to be blaring in our ears. We can get confused and disorientated and make wrong decisions when we are not hearing God’s voice correctly. There are times we need to just go apart, get quiet and ask the Lord to speak to us and help us to hear.
Periodically, the guys from the lawn service show up where we live to clear around our courtyard. Not just one person but 4 or 5 and they all start their machines and leaf blowers and have them going all at once. The noise gets so loud that it is deafening, and Al puts on earplugs and attempts to continue studying. I tried to make a phone call and had to go in another room as it was impossible to hear the person. It’s hard to think and we can hardly wait for the workers to leave.
Sometimes we may feel bombarded by the enemy and it seems like he tries to confuse our thinking and disrupts our thoughts of the Lord. It may cause us to doubt and bring fear to us and discouragement. We see that in scripture how the enemy uses many tactics to cause our faith to waver and for us to even freeze in our tracks and not be able to move forward.
But God is greater and His power is without limit and when we feel the enemy coming down on us, we need to cry out for the Lord’s help. I think of David when he faced the giant who he was no match for him in the natural. He simply told Goliath, “You came to me with the sword and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, who you have defiled.” Now David had experienced tight situations before when he killed a bear and Lion, while tending his sheep. He had seen God’s power and was not terrorized by the enemy but spoke boldly. He only needed one smooth stone to fell Goliath and then cut off his head with the giant’s own sword.
Sometimes when we feel bullied by the enemy, we just need one scripture, or one memory of a past victory, to buoy up our faith and to know that God is so much more powerful. As it says in I John 4:4 (ESV), “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Let us not let down our faith when the enemy is making all kinds of noise and trying to trip us up, but let us overcome as we speak the Word of God, and stand firmly in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Challenge for today:  Memorize I John 4:4 and when confused by the noise of the enemy, speak it aloud.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy
