Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a great weekend! Vikings had another great win! Seems like the weeks go so quickly. Today I plan to go to Aldi’s and my exercise class and do some baking.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
A wonderful gift from the Lord when we moved from the lake to our apartment was the close proximately to the Paul Bunyan Trail. For 6 years we have walked it most days and enjoyed the beauty of the trail through the forest, people we meet, the exercise, and lessons we are learning. Al and I most often walk together and share our hearts, talk over challenges and learn lessons.

I will get more personal and share what the Lord has been teaching me through the trail. The first thing that comes to mind is to slow down and be patient. I have long legs and walk faster than Al so I quickly learned that I had to slow my gait and walk in harmony with Al. If I am going to hear what he is saying, I need to walk in unison with him and am learning to do it more with less reminders.

The second lesson comes closely on the first as I need to not only walk slower but actually stop and visit along the 2 ½ miles that we walk. Now my husband is an extravert so nearly every person gets a greeting and often we actually stop and visit a short while. At first this was hard but gradually I could see the Lord’s purpose as he has brought many people into our lives and some with burdens. The first one was a man I have written about who had just lost his son and was grieving. We all knew it was the Lord that brought us together at such a pivotal time and he has become our friend who we pray for daily, as well as, his wife who is in an Alzheimer’s unit now.

Another lesson I learned is God may interrupt our schedules because of needs of others, as in the day we saw an aged woman who was lost and carrying groceries and did not know how to get back to the Assisted Living. She was headed the opposite way on the trail and we wondered when it would be discovered she was missing. We were able to convince her to turn around and brought her back to where she belonged and thanked the Lord she was safe.

Just recently I learned how the trail is a place to learn and grow from others and we often talk to a professor who we met. He shares his writings with us and we discuss them and grow through the exchanges and learn new things.

Every now and then, I feel the Lord smiling as he sends a friend along who walks slower than Al and the two of them visit as I get to walk as fast as I want, and even jog a bit. I sometimes sing and pray and get home in time to have Al’s supper waiting.

The trail has been a blessing, and I never know how long it will take to walk it on a particular day because it depends on what the Lord has in store for us. Perhaps a new friend, a lost soul that needs direction, or it could be He wants us just to praise Him and enjoy the beauty of nature.
The Lord has His ways of teaching us and He has used the Paul Bunyan trail to open my eyes more to His ways. In Isaiah 30:21 it says, “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “this is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord what you are to learn today through your circumstances.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! What gorgeous weather we have been having and still colorful on the trail. Today I plan to make cookies on a stick and pork chops with Spanish rice and clean the apartment. Emoji
Devotions from Judy’s heart
There is a big difference between knowing about God and knowing God. The Lord wants to actually dwell in us, that we may know Him in a very personal way. We can only really love others when we love God first and then the outflow of His love in us will touch them. In ourselves we have nothing to give, but it is the Lord within us that loves and accepts others into our hearts. It brings to mind a simple song that Charles Conway wrote: “Lord Crucified, Give me a heart like Thine! Teach me to love the souls of dying men. And keep my heart in closest touch with Thee, and give me love, pure calvary love, to bring the lost to Thee!”

We can only love the souls of others when we know the Lord ourselves. Whatever we do for others, whether it be providing a big need or something small as listening to them, we are really doing it for the Lord. It is His power at work in us, to even give us the desire to reach out and touch others with His love. But in our reaching out to others we must never get so busy that we neglect the feeding of our own souls. As we read the Word, our own souls are fed and thereby we are given the strength to no longer live for ourselves but to live for Him. II Cor. 3:15) It is   also helpful to pray the scriptures for certain verses will penetrate our hearts and also silence our own thoughts to think His thoughts.

When we open our hearts to others, we also open ourselves up to pain, as well. Sometimes those we help hurt us and we must expect pain as a follower of the Lord, for think what they did to Him. Sometimes people walk roughshod over our hearts, but let that not deter us from opening ours. We never know what God has in store for us, for often He surprises us. One such experience some time ago, I met a lady in a wheelchair at church who was legally blind. We exchanged names and she had heard I supplied clothes to different people, so she asked if I would find clothes for her. Since I worked at Share and Care then, I started looking for clothes in her size and brought them over to her at Assisted Living. But the Lord had much more in mind, for I spent time with her and we shared the Lord and prayed together. I have come to love her and each time we go to the lake I visit her; and since she now has more clothes than she can possibly wear I just bring her baked goods and root beer to celebrate with others and we spend the whole time sharing and praying. I always feel uplifted after my time with her.

The Lord has put each of us in a particular place to help us to grow in Him but also to help those around us. Let us keep our hearts open first to God’s love and then to others.

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to open your eyes to who you can bless, and then watch how He works and blesses you as well.

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you!! Enjoy time to get rest and renewed. I plan to bake today and do some organizing and studying etc.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
It’s so beautiful to see a self-less person who is open to the Lord and thinking of others and not what is in it for them. A person came to mind right away that I would call holy and self-less and she has recovered from Acute Myeloid Leukemia after spending most of 10 months in the hospital and had a bone marrow transplant. Even when she was in much pain and so very sick, she thought of others and ministered to them. You can read about her in the Fall/Winter 2024 magazine, Her Voice.

Eugene Haas writes about what it means to be selfless, and he describes such a person as being open to God and doesn’t have an obsession with self-concern, self-image, and self-gratification but each moment is celebrated as God invites them to empty themselves so others can be enriched.  A beautiful example is Mary who didn’t count the cost, for after the angel told her she would bear the Son of God, she said, “Behold I am a servant of the Lord; let it be according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

God wants all of us to grow in selflessness and move beyond ourselves to show His unconditional love to others. Freedom in the Lord is not simply to do what we want without restraints but to be free from our egos and consider others. The apostle Paul was so focused on the law and all the rules and when he was set free in Christ, he ends up saying he has made himself a slave to all, so he might win them to Christ. Let us all desire to be set free from our ego to live a self-emptying life for Christ and for others.

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to change you from centering on yourself to putting Him first and others second and yourself last.

Dear Ones,
Hope your day is full of joy.  Al will be off to Men’s group this morning and I plan to go for my treatment and also bake bread and make crock pot stew. This afternoon we have Bible study Emojiand later going to Costco.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Would we say our source of joy is the Lord, or in our hearts do we live life that depends on the actions of others to make us happy? If it is the latter, we will always be disappointed. I think of newlywed couples who have expectations that their mate will meet all their needs and not disappoint them. But it isn’t long into the marriage when each ones’ selfishness sort of oozes out and they are left feeling let down and even angry. But we must all come to know that no person can meet all our needs, only the Lord.

The Lord is to be our source and strength, not others. Even though they may be close to us, the pressure on any person for our happiness is too much, for only the Lord can fill that place.   David sang in Psalm 28:7, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped therefore my heart exalts, and with my song I shall thank Him.” There were many people in David’s life that would certainly have been disappointing, including King Saul and his own son Absolum etc. Our expectancy and our hope must be in the Lord. (Psalm 27:2)

We must also guard against thinking the worse will happen to us, especially if we have had a troubled childhood or abusive marriage or been betrayed. Instead of looking for that to happen again, we can ask the Lord to change our expectations, for the Lord is the source of goodness and joy. John Newton penned the words to the song Amazing Grace as he recognized that all goodness is from the Lord. “The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be as longs as life endures.”

Challenge for today: Give up expectations of others for your happiness and thank the Lord He is your source of all goodness.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to be flooded with peace and rest. I went to bed the usual time so will be reading today about the election. This morning I plan to go to my exercise class and this afternoon crafts and this evening Bible Study.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I had a devotional to send out this morning but in my inbox was a prayer by Pastor Mark Roberts from Fuller seminary. He writes before knowing the results of the election but with each election always goes to Psalm 46. I hope you will want to read his words about the Psalm and you may by going to lifeforleaders@depree.com . I will just include his prayer today.

“God, you are indeed our refuge and strength. You are our very present help in trouble. Thank you for being there. Thank you for being there for us.

Help us, Lord, to know you so truly that we will not fear no matter what is happening in the world around us. May our words and actions reflect our trust in you.

Thank you, Lord, for your “desolations.” Thank you for bringing an end to violence and warfare. Thank you for the richness of your peace, filled with justice, fruitfulness, and celebration. Help us, we pray, to receive your gift of peace and to be peacemakers in our world.

We hear your strong command: “Be still, and know that I am God!” Help us to stop our frenetic activity and let go of our frantic worry. May we know you so truly and deeply that we can, indeed, be still before you.

Thank you, Lord of Hosts, for being with us today. Thank you for being our refuge. May we find true rest in you. And out of this rest, may we work with you as agents of your peace and flourishing. Amen.”

Challenge for today: Read all of Psalm 46 and be still before the Lord

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a wonderful day. I plan to go to our Women’s Bible Study this morning and then Al and I are going to friends for the afternoon of fellowship.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
In our culture today we are encouraged to act on our feelings. If it feels good, do it? But is that God’s way? I think not. In fact, it is a symptom of immaturity just like a little child who wants his own way and to only do what he feels like doing, and not what is asked of him. If we lived like by our emotions and just what we felt like, we would not only mess up our own life, but those around us as well. I remember years ago a gal in Ladies’ class that told me she lived according to her feelings, and she would wait until she “felt led” to clean or make supper, go to the store etc. I can’t imagine what her family endured until she was willing to “grow up”.

The Lord asks us to do many things that we may not want to do, but if we want to walk by the Spirit, it means surrendering to what He shows us to do. It doesn’t depend our feelings and emotions but rather on we know from scripture and what the Spirit prompts us to do. We don’t need to ask ourselves if we “feel” like doing something that God asks us for it is more a matter of choosing to do what we know God asks of us. I was reading Joyce Meyer’s devotional and she said it well, that if our feelings vote ‘yes’ but our hearts say ‘no’ we need to tell our feelings they don’t get to vote! Feelings are immature and most often don’t vote what is best for us. Many times, the enemy toys with our feelings to get us to do things we know are not what God says. We can’t trust our feelings so let us not let them vote! How many of us reap disappointing consequences when we lead with our emotions and not by the spirit. Our feelings may say that what our neighbor said to us was uncalled for, so l will just tell him what I really think and let him have it! Or it can even be that our emotions tell us to keep working when we need to quit, rest, and not neglect our family. Feelings are not reliable so let us obey the Lord even when we don’t feel like it, and I find our right feelings usually catch up. Let us choose to obey!

It says in Gal.5:16, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desire of the flesh.” May we not let our emotions dictate our faith but walk in obedience.

Challenge for today: Obey even when you don’t feel like it!

Overcomers and the Elections

I am writing this blog on Sunday night (the 3rd of Nov.) before the aftermath of the elections.  I am writing to warn men who read this blog to have godly restraint in the days to come.  The enemy has stirred up anger and hatred to a fever pitch in the media.  Men need to refrain from falling into this ugly stew.  We have a wonderful opportunity to show those around us who we really are –  Overcomers.  “This is the victory that has overcome the world, ever our faith.  Who is it that overcomes the world?  Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God” (I John 5:4-5).

In our weekly bible study in our apartment building, believers gather from  different church backgrounds.  I consistently tell them that we will not talk politics, leading us into  rabbit holes with no hope of finding light.  I have said repeatedly that our focus is three fold.  First, the guidance of God’s eternal word; second, the Lordship of Jesus in all our affairs; and three, the kingdom reign of Jesus.  We pray often, “may our kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”  On these three issues we have a firm standing.  Men, may you be on solid ground.  We will be able to withstand the coming storm with a focus on these three principles.

We don’t know the future, but we have absolute confidence that in Jesus we are overcomers.  Paul give us encouragement. “We don’t yet see things clearly.  We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist.  But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the  sun shines bright!  We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!” (I Cor 13:12 Message) Then Paul reminds us of love showing the way.  “But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly.  And the best of the three is love” (I Cor 13:13 Message).

Earlier in Chapter 13 of I Corinthians, Paul give a picture of  a loving person.   Men, ask God to be merciful and gracious to you, giving you the courage  to be a loving man in the days to come, a man who has overcome in Jesus.  You don’t know the outcome of the elections for our nation, but you are reigning with Jesus.  All thing will  work for the good of God’s reign in our affairs.

Paul says the love that God puts in our hearts will have the following result in our attitude.  “This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience – it looks for a way of being constructive.  It is not possessive: it is neither anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own importance…..It does not keep account of evil or goat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it shares the joy of those who live by the truth.  Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything.  Love never fails. (I Cor 13: 4 &6-8).

Men, in the days to come, know that His love in you will help you weather the storm that is coming.  Paul prayed, “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.  May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully (Eph. 2:18b -19 NLT).

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a great weekend. Emoji We were glad for the Viking win last night but didn’t stay up for the whole game. Today I am going to Aldi’s and Exercise class and then Ann and Leif are coming for dinner so we can celebrate Leif’s birthday.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Perhaps all of us have read of different prayer techniques and one or more of them sounded great but when we tried them, it did not seem to work for us. But that is okay, and we don’t need to apologize because we are all different and we have to discover what works for us at a particular time in our lives. The Lord knocks at our heart’s door and our relationship is not like anyone else, so we must seek what is nurturing for us as we answer His knock and commune with Him. I like a quiet hidden place but there are those who like to be out amongst others and praying as they walk. We need to ask ourselves what is best for a nurturing relationship and always be ready for change as we are led.

Of course, we should always be open to praying with other believers, and it is good to have communal prayer, helping us realize we are not alone but part of the family of God. We pray Sunday mornings as we say the Lord’s prayer together, and also join in praying for those on the prayer list etc. There is much power in those prayers when we pray together. Of course we are to pray alone as well, and I often pray the Jesus Prayer, “Jesus, Son of David have mercy on me a sinner.” It was also the prayer of the blind beggar in Luke 18:13. Some like to pray the rosary and others like Lectio Divina where scripture is read 4 or 5 times, first to get the gist of it, then to meditate on it and see what seems to jump out, then to pray in response and then to just sit in silence and reflect on it. Some also move on to act in some way on the passage. Another way that Albert Haase, a Franciscan priest mentions, is how he reads the scripture several times and then asks what the passage speaks to his history, and to his head, to his heart and finally to his hands to take some action.

Imaginative prayer is also done by those who read the gospel and put themselves in the story of a certain character and scene. What would it feel like to be the prodigal or the elder brother and it may trigger feelings from the past to share with a spiritual director. Or you may like to pray what I remember by the acronym ACTS. Start with Adoration and a prayer and then proceed to Confess our sins of commission and omission before going on to Thanksgiving as we remember God’s gifts to us and conclude with Supplication. That is a time to ask for prayer needs and intercede for others. There are many more ways to pray but it is up to us to find our own unique ways that open us up to a closer relationship with the Lord.

Challenge for today: Be open and ask the Lord to show you unique ways to pray and draw ever closer to Him.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying the weekend and don’t forget to turn your clock back an hour tonight! Emoji
Today I plan to clean the apartment and do food prep and some studying.
Would you say you are honest with the Lord and transparent when you pray?
Devotions from Judys heart
Do our prayers mirror what is in our hearts or do we pray from where we think we should be and fail to be honest and transparent with the Lord. Of course, that is rather foolish since He knows everything so why not just be transparent and tell it like it is, even when we are angry or confused and down. When we give all our struggles and emotions to Him, we will find that we begin to see things from a new light. Jesus Himself expressed his emotions in the Garden of Gethsemane, wept when he saw the sorrow of Mary and Martha over their brother’s death, was angry over the money changers in the temple etc. His prayers came from the heart and expressed many kinds of emotions.

It’s not healthy to stuff our emotions and deny them but we need to welcome them and deal with them and share with the Lord. Only thereby can we let them go can and say goodbye to them. We just come as we are to the Lord and tell Him how we feel. Maybe as we read a Psalm it is David or another expressing to God what we are feeling in our heart now and we can make his prayer our prayer. So often David is in a tight spot and fleeing for his life and he calls out to God to be his shield, his refuge, his safe place. Psalm 103, “O Lord many are my foes! Many are rising against me…. But you, O Lord are a shield about me, my glory and the lifter of my head.”  It is helpful to memorize some of the Psalms and they can become our words to the Lord of what is in our heart. Maybe we have experienced a wonderful blessing from the Lord and we are filled with such thankfulness that we turn to Psalm 103 and “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”

Let us pray from where we are at the time, not gloss over things, but speak to the Lord what is in our hearts. Sometimes it doesn’t seem very pretty, but it is real and when we give the Lord those things He will sort them out and bring us to a new place.

Challenge for today: Don’t hide from the Lord but ask Him to help you be transparent with not only Him but also with others.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

November 1, 2024

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend!!!Hope you have some time to spend in nature and refreshment. Today I am going to make fajitas, clean some cupboards and do some writing, walk the Paul Bunyan trail etc.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Too many of us live on autopilot and go along each day in a routine, not experiencing our lives in living color but more like black and white. God wants us to experience life in its fulness and see God in all of our happenings throughout the day.

We need to discover God in the present moment, not having a fixation on the past or thinking only of the future. Let us experience the NOW and know that God is present in it where we are at. We are also to be full of gratitude, realizing everything we have is a gift from Him. That should help us to live with open hands to help and serve others who God brings into our lives, knowing they have unique gifts for us in return also.

To experience living color, we need to accept God’s love in new ways He has for us. We must also come to know our weaknesses and mixed motives and know we are like clay. None of us are without flaws but in recognizing them we can see and experience the Lord’s grace and power as Paul says in II Cor. 4:7, “But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this surpassing power belongs to God and does not come from us.” I will always remember a very cracked pot at the chapel of a retreat place that Al and I visited. At night the light so beautifully shown through the cracks in the pot and lit up the whole chapel. Isn’t it amazing that God’s power can shine through our very weak areas. In the Message translation it says, “If you only look at us, you might miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us.”

Let us be humble to know our brokenness but also aware of God’s grace He offers daily. He knocks at our heart’s door and desires to transform our lives, so we see things in the colors of grace and are open to the wonder of His presence.

Challenge for today: Accept your weaknesses but enjoy the colorful journey of grace.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy
