Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a wonderful day. We are headed to the Lake this morning to see friends who moved away a few years ago. Will also stop to see a friend in Assisted Living on the way. The weather has been so gorgeous and we are glad we can enjoy time by the lake before the cabin is closed up.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
If we are honest most of us have believed lies about God and also about ourselves. Many think that once they accept the Lord into their life that their problems are over, but then they hit dark valleys and feel empty and distant from God. They start believing the lies of the enemy, losing faith and their trust in God. They feel that it is all up to them and God won’t come through.

Michael Cusick, counselor and spiritual director, warns us against unhealthy self-soothing that tries to fill the void in our lives. Many turn to drugs and alcohol to try to find relief and fill the emptiness within. Others may hide their pain and vulnerability behind masks. Maybe we suddenly get a terrible illness or we are betrayed by a friend and we feel like we are spinning in place, for life doesn’t seem to work as before. Something has happened that shakes us, humiliates us, and redefines us. We may try to meet our own needs, but we must open our hearts instead to the Lord.

The evil one quickly tries to step in, suggesting we try alternatives that sound close to the truth rather than letting our deep needs be met by the Lord. In Matthew 4 we read how Jesus was tempted three times by the devil, and Satan used even the word of God to try to get Jesus to meet his own needs like turning stones into bread. Jesus didn’t take the devil’s bait, but instead relied on His Father and spoke the Word back to the devil.

There is only one place we need to go when feel empty and the bottom drops out of our lives, and that is to the Lord. He waits for us to come, and it says in Ps. 32:8, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go: I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” We are not alone, but the Lord waits for us to come to Him. He will reorder our life and give us love and purpose.

Challenge for today: When you feel down and separated from the Lord, quickly run to Him and know He is full of compassion for you.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

A Gold Jacket

I have an admission to make as I write this blog.  I look forward to watching the pro football hall of fame enshrinement ceremony each year.  This year my favorite team, the Minnesota Vikings, had Jared Allen, who played defensive end, go into the hall of fame.  My wife knows when I am been watching the ceremony.  I usually am crying like a baby.  It is inspiring to observe a completive, no-nonse guy stand before the mike with the sports world listening intently to his prepared speech speak from the heart.

Sometimes, it seems like the football player is emulating himself and his accomplishments.  But most of the time, when a man stands before the world, giving his acceptance speech, his words are deep, heartfelt and sincere.  He remembers the hard work, the guys he played with, along with those who have supported him.  Often the man standing at the podium will give a clear witness of strength found in the Lord. When I sense the sincere gratitude, often filled with heartfelt emotions, it brings me to tears.  Here are men, admired by the sports world, for being a tough and determined football player, yet when the spotlight is on them, they give gratitude and thanksgiving to others, and often filled with emotion.  “Wow.”

Jared Allen, in the last minutes of his speech, gave a bold and clear testimony regarding the place of Jesus in his life.  He began by remembering the premarital advice given to him and his wife.  He referred to the two most important decisions a man will make.  First, the decision to follow Jesus and who will he marry.  He also recalled the advice of knowing there are two different people in life. First, those who are like a boat anchor, who drag you down and second, those who elevate you.  He then gives high praise for his wife, calling her, “a true game elevator.”

Then Allen speaks directly to his two lovely daughters before sports world.   He calls them, “his greatest accomplishment” and his “legacy.” He makes this remarkable statement, one in which I lost my composure.  “When I get called home to heaven one day, if all they talk about is my gold jacket, then I’ve failed miserably, failing as a father, husband and friend.”  He then gives this advice, which is very bold indeed.   “Always put Christ first and find your ‘why.’  Dream big dreams and always purse greatness in whatever you do.”

It is amazing how the light of the gospel shines through at unique times in our culture, as the message of “Good News” is told to millions of sports fans.  May Jared Allen’s words, speak to the hearts and souls of men.

To hear the name of “Jesus” mentioned on the stage of the pro football hall of fame, is powerful.  Phil 2:10-11 declares, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  I agree wholehearted that our two most important decisions in life are accepting Jesus as Lord and who a man will marry.  Allen’s advice to his daughters, in putting Christ first is life is wise fatherly counsel.

Listen to his advice, men.  Your most important decision will be about the “Lordship of Jesus” and your choice of a life partner.  It seems to me; Allen was pleading with his daughters to put Jesus first.  May all the young men, who are football fans not forget this wise and heartfelt advice from pro hall of famer, Jared Allen. Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful weekend. The weather has been gorgeous and the walks on the trail so beautiful. Today I plan to go Aldi’s and my exercise class and do some cooking and baking.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
We all have times when we have hurting hearts due to pain or sorrow and we tend to get more serious about God. It may be in a sudden moment that we know we can’t go on without Him for our need is great, and we say, “Lord, I need you!! I can’t do life on my own, I need you!” Whatever circumstance it is that drives us to the Lord is really a gift, for it puts us in position to receive God’s grace and healing power as we depend on Him.

Perhaps we have been going merrily along in our life and everything is good, and suddenly we hit a wall. It could be a circumstance that will change everything, or it could be hurtful words that pierced our heart, but whatever it is, we feel helpless and needy. God specializes in using those circumstances to draw us to Himself and it is a time He displays His power, for it says that “His power is perfected in our weakness.” (II Cor. 12:9). We come to realize in a deep way that our need for the Lord is great!

There are secondary benefits, for our pride gets crushed. Such times drive us to the Word where we hungrily read scripture to claim verses that sustain us.  We also may become more sympathetic to others and slower to judge them, for we know what it is like to feel like being in the pit. Hopefully we come to realize that life is very brief and discover what is really important and can come to rest in Him.

When we are delivered from our circumstance and pain, we may be filled with overwhelming gratitude and praise. Hopefully we see that God was producing fruit in our lives and now we have become more patient, understanding and loving toward others… more like Jesus. May our hurting times produce growth in each of us, for we need the Lord all the time.

Challenge for today: When trying times come into your life, run to the Lord for His help and respond to all that He would teach you.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying a beautiful weekend. We are leaving early today to go to Starbuck for the funeral of a dear friend. Ann is going with us as Jackie was her godmother.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I think all of us have had times when we are up against a wall and we decide whether or not we will go through the wall or if we will delay and refuse to grow towards maturity. Yes, we may start out well, beginning our relationship with the Lord and not only learning His ways but also actively serving Him. But then we hit the wall which could be any crisis that changes our world, like the death of a family member, a divorce, job loss or maybe dryness as we wonder where the Lord is. It is at that point we have to make a decision. Do I want to go through the wall and let the Lord deal with those things deep within or will I reject God’s intervention in my life?

Some people refuse to move ahead with the Lord and trust Him since they don’t know how He will work in their lives. They may get bitter and refuse to trust the Lord altogether. Others may experience the dark night when they can’t sense God’s presence and feel dry, yet trust that God is doing a work in them. But if we let the Lord lead us through the wall, we will feel more certain of God’s love and discover who we really are as we can lay aside the opinions of others. We will wonderfully experience a cleansing of our inner being.

But remember: God is the One in charge and moves us through the wall. We need to trust Him, wait on Him, obey Him and stick with Him even though we may want to quit. But all the while, He is in the business of transforming His nature within us. It may be seen in us as a humbleness and brokenness, for we are being stripped of our pride. We no longer judge others and realize instead how needy we are. I often pray the Jesus Prayer from Luke 18:38, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” We are the needy ones and though we don’t always know what God is doing in us, we learn to trust, give up our attachments and wait.

Challenge for today: Dare to ask the Lord to take you through your wall and as you surrender, know that He is trustworthy and will do a beautiful work within you.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

September 26, 2025

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend!!  May you are enjoying these sunny warm Fall days. Today is party day here and we will be going to get the cake and setting up for the September Birthdays. I plan to also do food prep etc. as we will be gone all day tomorrow.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
We were meant not only to worship the Lord and serve Him but we were also meant to enjoy Him. He is our loving Father who delights in us and we can bask in His love every day. I was reading from Psalm 105 this morning and the Psalmist is giving thanks to the Lord and singing praises to Him, perhaps even dancing. He remembers all the works the Lord has done and is rejoicing. In Verse 4 the writer says, ”Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually!” That means we don’t say a quick prayer at the start of our day and then not commune with the Lord until we fall into bed at night. Sharing with Him and enjoying His presence is something we can enjoy all throughout our day.
One night I had a dream and I kept coming upon people in my dream that were gazing up into the sky. They had a look of joy and let the beams of sunlight just fall on them. I had been doing that off and on as well even as I still carried on my work. I found it left me with a feeling of lightness and joy and a desire to do it often. At first I was surprised to see others here and there also putting their face to the heavens and I smiled feeling a oneness with them. Their joy was evident and had a look of peace.

The Message translation says, “Keep your eyes open for God, watch for His works be alert for signs of His presence.” If we were seeking His presence continually throughout our day, our lives would be transformed and we would see all the things around us as a work of His hands. The Amplified translation says, “Seek, inquire of and for the Lord, and crave Him and His strength (His might and inflexibility to temptation): seek and require His face and His presence (continually) evermore.” Then we are told to also to move on to think about His miracles and wonders and faithfulness. Let us all enjoy the Lord and seek Him throughout our day.

Challenge for today: Memorize and practice Psalm 105:4.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a wonderful day. We have been having perfect fall weather without the need for even a jacket. This morning Al has men’s group and I plan to try new recipes with all the fresh garden produce. Yesterday it was chicken potpies!  This afternoon we have Bible study.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
We would probably all agree that our fast-paced lives are a threat to our spiritual health. So many of us have too many activities and constantly on the go, doing many jobs at a time. If we are always in motion, it isn’t long before we realize our souls are becoming impoverished. We no longer sense His presence, for we are constantly busy and desiring results that are instant and visible. But that is not God’s way.

We read about the desert saints: they chose to face life in solitude and quiet so that they could seek God without all the attractions of the world that will not satisfy. Some lived in caves, small stone huts, etc. and had a rhythm of work, prayer and solitude. They confronted the darkness within them as they were not distracted by busyness as they cared for their soul’s inner transformation.

We also have a battle of the heart to fight. We may not actually go to the desert, but it means dying to our flesh nature so we can come closer to the Lord. I was reading Water from a Deep Well by Gerald Sittser and he had some suggestions. We could go to a church, sitting silently in the sanctuary for an hour or two in silence and just listen to the Lord. Or we could fast from TV for a month, pray for a half hour before going to work, or invite people to our home that rarely get invitations. We could give more to the Lord’s work, work at a soup kitchen, etc.

Whatever things seem to occupy our lives and steal our focus from the Lord are the things we should ask for the Lord’s help to give up.  It will be different for all of us. King David prayed in Psalm 139 that the Lord would search and know his heart, test him and know his thoughts and then to lead Him in His way everlasting. Let us be serious about our spiritual lives and give attention to what is truly important. One day our lives will be over and only what is done for Him will last.

Challenge for today: Discipline yourself in some new way today.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

September 24, 2025

Dear Ones,
Hope your day is full of His peace. I plan to go to Exercise class this morning and Craft class this afternoon and Bible Study this evening.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
All of us have been forgiven much, everything we have ever done or will ever do, when we believe in the Lord and ask forgiveness. This wondrous gift came at a great price, for Jesus gave His life that we might be forgiven and have life eternal. (John 3:16) But it should never end there, for we are also to forgive anyone who hurts us, knowing we have been forgiven much.

I was reminded of that when I went to visit a Christian friend who shared how she had been berated and hollered at by a care giver, simply because she put her light on for help. The person had done this before and my friend had answered her back, only this time she had just kept quiet, knowing that saying anything would only escalate things. We talked about the situation and I told her that she would need to forgive her, even though the other person wasn’t sorry. When we forgive, then God will deal with the person and we are set free. It helped that we talked about how Jesus knew exactly how she was feeling for He forgave those who mocked Him, spit on Him and there were times He simply kept silent. Her heart softened and she replied, “Yes, I can forgive her! I will forgive her.” We ended up praying for the gal who makes life hard for her, and my friend had peace in forgiveness.

We have only to think of Joseph also, who was sold as a slave by his brothers and spent time in prison for something he had not done. He could have become bitter, but he helped others even while in prison. He was patient and put himself in the hands of God who later delivered him and made him the mightiest man in the country after Pharaoh. Rather than getting even with his brothers, he was forgiving and let God handle that situation, resulting in restoration and his family being saved during the famine that followed. When we suffer, let us forgive even though we don’t know how God will handle the situation or how long it will take. A beautiful example of this in our day is Erika Kirk who forgave the man who killed her beloved husband.
Challenge for today: When treated badly, let us be quick to forgive and put it all in God’s hands.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
May your day be filled with sunshine. We have a pastor coming early this morning and after lunch Al and I will be going to friends for prayer and fellowship.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How does the way we live our life display to others that we belong to Jesus and not to the world? Can they recognize by our conversation that He is not just on the outer periphery of our lives but the center, or do we not mention Him at all? People in love smile a lot and love to talk about the one whom they love! Do we express joy in our countenance and talk about the Lord or are we downcast and discouraged?!

Some of the characteristics that should be indicative of a Jesus’ follower would be: being a person of integrity, one who refrains from lying (even little lies), cheating, adultery, etc. Also, he or she doesn’t make excuses and keeps commitments and promises. Daniel of the Bible was like an open book and such a person of integrity that his enemies could find no fault in him. It says in Daniel 6:4 “He was faithful, always responsible, and completely trustworthy.” No matter how hard they searched there was nothing to criticize in him. Wouldn’t that be great if that could be said of each of us?

Jesus’ followers are to work hard and faithfully because of what He has already done for us. Our work should be a joy when we do it for Him and He has promised to give us a reward for whatever we do in His name. Whether we are cleaning restrooms or work as a CEO or a cashier, we are to do it for His glory. We also need to ask for forgiveness when our work is done only half-heartedly or pridefully, for we are to serve Him with all our being.

We are to be hospitable to others, not to make a big impression, but to express God’s love to them. Our homes are to be used as resources as we express love to others and bring them encouragement over coffee or perhaps a hot meal. We are to be genuine in our love and do it as unto the Lord. Paul says in Romans 12:9, “Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.”

Challenge for today: Show God’s love to another in a tangible way today.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Like an old-time revival

My wife and I, watched in amazement and joy as we sensed  the presence of the Lord this past Sunday, during the five-hour memorial for Charlie Kirk, held in Phoenix’s State Farm Stadium.  Both of us have spent the last couple of weeks, trying to discern what will be the impact of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.  Beyond a doubt Kirk is a martyr because of his example, spirit and courage.  He has captured the hearts of young men.  The movement is growing.

Two passages of Scripture help describe what participants experienced as a spiritual revival as well as a political rallying cry. Seldom in such a large gathering have such opposite expressions so blended together.  Political power and spiritual energy was produced by the testimonies to the life of Charlie Kirk and his belief in Jesus, as Lord and Savior.  It produced a momentum that will begin to capture our nation with the “Good News” that Jesus and His Kingdom is the ultimate answer to the brokenness felt in our nation.

The first passage is from Malachi 4:2-3, “But you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings.  And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.”  As the TV cameras panned crowd of almost 100,000 in the stadium, you could see the energy as the crowd, freely  expressing their joy in the Lord.  They were like calves that had felt penned up.  They experienced  the healing presence of the Lord.

The second passage is from Isaiah 9:2, “The people who walk in darkness will see a great light.  For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.”  The fourth verse goes on to say, “For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders.  You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian.”  Many people once again saw that the darkness can not overcome the “light of Jesus” presence.  “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:5).  The yoke of slavery to the voices of darkness was broken and the heavy burden of confusion, despair and uncertainty was lifted from the shoulders of many well meaning folks, who were previous blinded by the enemy of our souls.

This is what I take away from this spiritual revival meeting held in the desert of Arizona, watched by millions around the world.  First, Jesus is Lord.  This was the rock solid belief of Charlie Kirk.  Jesus declared,  “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev. 22:13).  Jesus is “the Arc of History.”  Don’t try to bend it in any other direction, then his Kingdom Presence.

Secondly, the necessity and beauty of Charlie’s wife Erika confessing, “I forgive you” to her husband’s killer.  Her example is the model for our broken and divided nation at this moment in time.  Jesus taught us to pray, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those trespass against us.”

On a personal note – two challenges for me.  Charlie Kirk has challenged me to be a man of courage. He was not afraid of the opposition.  The second challenge was his on going comment to his wife, “What can I do today for you as my wife?”

This revival in the desert will stick in the hearts and minds of Americans for long time.  May we all have the courage to choose the way of Jesus, as we face the opposition from those who have been  blinded to the truth of King Jesus.

September 22, 2025

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a great weekend. Today I plan to bake cookies, shop, and exercise. Instead of my own words today I would like to share a prayer by Pastor Yvon Attia that we can pray for our nation and especially our youth.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Prayer by Pastor Yvon Attia

“Father in Heaven, I thank You for raising up a generation that will not bow to fear, compromise, or intimidation. You have called young people in this hour to be a voice of truth, a light in the darkness, and a testimony of Your power.

In the name of Jesus, I rebuke the spirit of fear that seeks to silence and paralyze Your sons and daughters. Fear, you have no place in their hearts, their minds, or their voices. For it is written,”For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

Lord, clothe this generation with holy boldness. Let them rise up with the courage of Esther, the fire of Elijah, and the faith of the apostles. Fill them with the Holy Spirit, that they may speak Your Word with authority, stretch out their hands to heal the sick, and perform signs and wonders in the name of Jesus.

I declare that young people will not stand on the sidelines; they will move to the front lines of this revival. They will not be ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation. Their voices will shake campuses, fill stadiums, and transform nations.

Father, release a spirit of adoption so they know they are sons and daughters, chosen and loved. Let perfect love cast out every trace of fear.

Rise up, sons and daughters of God. Stand tall, warriors of the cross. Be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9). In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.

Challenge for today: Pray this prayer for our nation and be courageous for the Lord.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy
