Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Month: February 2025 (Page 1 of 3)

February 28, 2025

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! Today is Party Day here and we will be going to Costco to pick up the cake and prepare for the celebration this afternoon. We are enjoying warmer days for our walks too and soon the Paul Bunyan trail will be all clear.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Parties are fun and here at Northern Lakes we have lots of parties. Every month we celebrate birthdays as well as special days like Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas etc. But have you ever thought of the best celebrations that go on in heaven over even one person who returns to the Lord. Our parties are nothing in comparison to the jubilation that happens in glory.

I was reading yesterday from Luke 15 of what Jesus tells the crowd, including those who were thought sinful and tried to intently listen. Jesus lets them know that they are being sought after for the shepherd will leave 99 sheep just to find one little lost one. That would certainly let them know that no one is unimportant but much loved. He also gives the story of a lost coin that was found, and great celebration takes place with the neighbors. In case, the listeners doubt they can come to be a follower of Jesus, He tells the story of the prodigal son who took his inheritance and went far away from his father to engage in sinful living. When he comes to his senses, he is willing to go home and take the role of a servant. The Father was all the while looking for him and watching for his return. He meets him before he is even close to home and embraces him, kisses him and calls for a celebration. His son is found! He is restored to the father, dressed in new clothes, and great partying began.

There is great celebration when we repent and come back to the Lord. It says in verse 7 of Luke 15 that ”There’s more joy in heaven over one sinner’s rescued life than over ninety-nine good people in no need of rescue.”  God’s forgiveness is always available to each of us. No, we don’t deserve it, but He paid the price that will set us free, and our part is to repent and ask forgiveness. He does even more for He actually forgets we ever did the sin! Isn’t that awesome?! We may not forget what we have done when the enemy brings up an old sin; but rather than feel guilty again we can start thanking the Lord that He has forgiven us and remember there is partying going on in heaven over us!

Challenge for today: When you have sinned, repent and confess it to the Lord and thank Him; then visualize the joy amongst the angels.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a praise filled day. Al is going to Men’s group and later will lead Bible study here. I plan to make egg dishes and lots of food prep and later go down for donuts!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Recently I was reading Psalm 146, and it is full of praise to the Lord. He is our hope and our salvation and praise to Him expresses our appreciation and thankfulness. When someone does something for us, it seems incomplete when we just accept the gift and go on with our life without giving them thanks. Something is missing! I am sure we have all given to others, sometimes sacrificially, and then are disappointed when we don’t get even a thanks in return. We wonder did they appreciate the gift. But how good to our ears to receive a word of thanks or a note of appreciation from them, for we are not taken for granted and their hearts were touched by the gift received.
How much more does our heart need to praise the Lord, for He has given us everything, life and hope, forgiveness and healing, love and mercy and the list goes on and on.  My heart loves to sing praise to Him when I am alone in the car, I may express many names given Him like Lord of Lords, Savior, Shepherd, King of Kings, Father, Prince of Peace, Almighty One, Master, Protector etc. He is worthy of all praise, and He lifts our eyes upward on the eternal rather than focused on earthly things that will pass away.
What struck me most was verse 3 and 4 when it says, “Do not trust influential people, mortals who cannot help you. When they breathe their last breath, they return to the ground. On that day their plans come to an end.” The Psalmist says our hope is to rest in the Lord who made everything, not in our government or any individual who may be here today and gone tomorrow. As ones who love the Lord, we need to be praying for God to touch our lives, our families, our nation, and for His will to be done.  Let us seek the Lord, call upon Him, worship Him and do intercession. He is our Hope!
Challenge for today: Spend some time in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, and also prayer for our families and friends and our nation to come back to the Lord.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Devotions from Judy’s heart
More and more as we live the Christian life, we find that we were never meant to live it on our own but that we depend on God to do it through us. I think it would be great if we had instant maturity after receiving the Lord into our lives, but it is a day by day living out of our faith by grace given to us. I memorized Ephesians 2:8-9 early in life and Paul says it so well, “By grace you live as the ones who have been saved, through faith; this is not something you do on your own, it is the gift of God, not the product of works in which one could boast.”

I read Pastor Larry Christian’s book, Back to Square One and he says there are 3 ways to live the Christian life: you can choose the right way, the wrong way, or the gospel way. We all know what it is like to choose the wrong way but what is wrong with choosing the right way of following all the rules and trying to live a good life? Well, it is dependent on us, and what we can do or ought to do. We soon find we are falling into legalism and that is a dead-end street for we look to the law rather than the Lord. But the gospel way is all about what God is doing in us, and we are energized and dependent on Him. Much different when our expectancy is on the Lord, and we know we can’t do it on our own for it is all about grace and not our own effort. In fact, God takes the initiative and creates good works for us to do and prepares us to do them. All the while the Spirit works in us to become more like Jesus. Sometimes we are surprised at how many of the old temptations have fallen away and our negative reactions are not as frequent as they use to be and we find we are being changed. All the glory goes to the Lord, for He is transforming us as we are doing the things He has prepared for us to do.

No, we don’t become loving and holy overnight but we are on our way, just like my sister when she was learning how to play the violin. She wasn’t a concert violinist starting out and I had to cover my ears, but she was on the way and now a beautiful violinist. God’s way is also slow, and patient and puts before us each day what He knows we can handle as we are slowly changing to be like Him.

Challenge for today: Live the Gospel way of grace and do the works Jesus has prepared for you to do.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a day of His light shining through you to others.  Your question this week is, does your wick need trimming? If so, what things do you need to correct to burn brighter?
Devotions from Judy heart
When I was growing up my family spent the summers at our rustic cabin by the lake in Northern Minnesota with no running water, electricity and worst of all no or indoor plumbing. When it got dark, we either went to bed early or read books by the kerosene lamp. I remember my mom doing the necessary trimming of the wick of the lamp so it would burn well, for if left untrimmed it would produce a lot of smoke or have a flame so big it could start a fire. We were always cautioned to act carefully around the lamp lest we accidently caused our cabin to burn down.

Recently I read an email by author and teacher, Alane Haynes, who wrote an article that it was Time to Trim our Wicks, and it caught my attention. We probably all remember the parable of the ten virgins who were waiting for the bridegroom to come and what did they do? They put their lamps in order and trimmed their wicks and added oil and lit them. (Matt. 25:7) Haynes went on to stress the importance of trimming our wicks for if we fail to do that, we will simply produce a lot of smoke that hinders our vision and may lead us in the wrong direction. But when the fire of the Holy Spirit burns brightly in our lives it will reveal the pure light of the Lord and cause others to sense His presence. If the wick is long and not trimmed it burns high and hot and burns the oil faster, so we have to refill it often. It is a reminder to stay in step with the Holy Spirit, so we don’t overreact and burn out. Also, an untrimmed wick will be a hazard for the flame gets too high just like our ego and pride.

Haynes also writes of the charred end of the wick being like the dead things in our lives that need to be removed. That means accepting correction and not being prideful or worldly and complacent. Just like the wick trimmers and trays the priests used in the tabernacle in the Old Testament times were made of pure gold, so when the priest had to correct it would be in gentleness and in love. We are also to be humble and loving with others and when ministering to them being careful not to share with anyone else what God has removed from them. It is their story if they wish to tell.  All of us need to be trimmed that God’s light may shine more brightly through our vessels.

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to shine His pure light into your heart, and trim with His gold trimmers what needs to be corrected that you may more brightly shine for Him.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Is the I-phone a Lie?

“Yet he cannot bring himself to ask, ‘Is this idol that I’m holding in my hand a lie'” (Is. 44:20 NLT).  I just read this in my morning devotions.  In this section of Isaiah (44:6-20), the prophet is depicting the foolishness of idols.  The section begins with the Lord declaring, “I am the First and the Last; there is no other God” (44:6).  God then challenges the people to prove him wrong.  “How foolish,” God observes, “are those who manufacture idols.”  Being even more direct, God says, “Such stupidity and ignorance!  Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see.  Their minds are shut, and they cannot think” (44:18).

Do we have idols in our lifestyle that seem plain foolish in the eyes of our Lord?  Could our devotion to the use of modern idols point to our stupidity and ignorance?  Are we so blind that we cannot see what we are doing?  Are our minds so closed that we do not realize our devotion to modernity?  Could we hold in our hands an actual idol?  Could we be believing a lie when we can’t live without an i- phone?   If we think of devotion to an idol as the time we spend with it, how much we depend on it, and the almost addictive lifestyle habit the I-phone creates, then I would say “the I-Phone has become one of the chief idols in our day.”

Men, living in the modern world,  have to examine their lives, asking themselves if their I-phone have become an idol:

First and foremost, the I-phone has severely distorted our view of reality.  It can easily shape reality, from God as Creator and Redeemer of reality, to that which is formed by human beings in rebellion against the reality of a creator God.  Most damaging is how human life is portrayed.  The young, suffer the most, living with thoughts of suicide under the deception of not being created in the image of God for a loving relationship with him.

Second, simply put – because of the distortion of reality the I-phone is loaded with “misinformation.”  It is a powerful tool that “the father of lies” uses to spread his “lies.”  Jesus declared, “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8: 44). Our arch enemy will use every instrument at his disposal in his attempt to destroy humans made in the image of God.  The internet has become a primary tool of the enemy for fabricating lies.  Misinformation is really lying.  Satan will promote lying to spread his agenda of hate and anger.

Thirdly, the I-phone we all hold in our hands is a effective means of “propaganda.” It will take a concerted effort on the part of each of us not to be persuaded by the distorted views of reality on the web. Beware of how “the father of lies” can us the internet.

In Revelation, the devil is described as a dragon. the antichrist.   In Rev. 13, the spirit of the antichrist symbolized by the beast coming out of the sea having political power and the beast coming out of the earth with the ability to perform miracles. “The dragon gave the first beast his own power and throne and great authority” (Rev. 13:2). The second beast, “exercised all the authority of the first beast” (Rev.13:12). He will do “astounding miracles” by which “he deceived all the people who belong to this world” (13:14).

Men beware of the enemy’s cunning ability to distort reality and spread lies over the web.

Devotions from Judy’s heart
Forgiveness in our lives is so important and affects our health as well. Dr. Colbert writes that according to medical research, 75-90 % of illness and disease is stress related. Bitterness causes stress which interferes with our body’s ability to kill diseased cells and to prevent them from spreading. But when we get rid of anger and stress, our muscles relax, we are less anxious, and have more energy, and immune system can get strong. I was amazed to read of people who had only a short time to live with various diseases, after giving up their bitterness and forgiving people in their lives, went on to live a normal long life. Joel Osteen’s mom was one such person as she had liver cancer and the doctors gave her only 2 months to live. She ended up writing letters to 7 people who she may have offended or that she needed to forgive, including her husband, and afterwards she defeated her cancer and is in her nineties and still going strong. Wow! That shows you what unforgiveness and bitterness do to our bodies.

Psychologist, Bob Enright, pioneered a study on forgiveness and wrote, “true forgiveness goes a step further, offering something positive -empathy, compassion, understanding-toward the person who hurt you. That element makes forgiveness both a virtue and a powerful construct in positive psychology.” As Christians we are to “be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave us” (Eph. 4:32) We are to want the best for others, even those that have hurt us, and not to keep track of wrongs done to us, for the Lord wipes out our record of all wrongs. As I read this I was convicted of someone I had forgiven long ago but I had to admit, I didn’t wish her well or prayed for the Lord to bless her life. So I had to stop in the writing of this and pray and just do that.

Forgiveness process starts by uncovering our negative feelings about the offense done to us, and then we have to decide to forgive. But we need to go on towards understanding the offending person and have empathy and compassion for him or her. We begin to see the other person as someone wounded. Forgiveness won’t necessarily bring them into close relationship with us in every instance and may not always be wise. But we are to walk in love and forgiveness

Challenge for today: If the Holy Spirit convicts you of someone you need to forgive, pray:

“Lord, I choose to forgive___________, and release him (or her) from anything they did to me or my family. I let go of any desire for revenge and trust you to deal justly and mercifully. Forgive me for my part and help me to keep no record of wrongs. May I cancel the debt of any apology they owe to me and ask you bless ______ and set him (or her) free. Amen

Devotions from Judy’s heart
We all want to be healthy, and we might do many things to make sure we are physically healthy by eating nutritional food, exercising, taking supplements, having yearly checkups etc. and yet we may miss the main ingredient to a radiant life which is love. I am reading Dr. Don Colbert’s book, Health Zone, and he has written of how we can add years to our lives by adding the main ingredient of God’s love. He shares how he has treated over 50,000 patients and sold more than 10 million books, but he had a sudden revelation one morning while listening to a sermon. Although he had helped patients find health, he had missed what was most important and that was the cleansing, strengthening, empowering of God’s love which is the key to all physical, emotional and mental health.

What a change happened in his heart as he walks out God’s love in his life. He realized he had found the key to divine health and now shares with others, prays for patients and staff and sees their lives changed. Around him and all of us are disillusioned people who admit they don’t know if God exists. They love the things of the world and love for God is choked out. Someone must tell them and show them that Jesus exists, He loves them and so do we, for as we abide in Him, His love will pour out on those around us. John 13:34 tells us we are to love one another as He loves us.

When Jesus is Lord of our lives and we are walking in His love, it also means forgiving other in our lives that have hurt us. It was heart wrenching to read of what Colbert’s wife went through in her early years as her father came back from Vietnam a broken angry violent man and tried to sexually abuse her. Upon hearing a pastor preach on forgiveness, she went forward to receive ministry. She had an experience of the Lord’s presence and telling her to let go of all of the hurt and pain and betrayal for He died for it. She did and she was changed and even went to her father to tell him she had forgiven him. She shared that it takes full surrender to let God forgive through you and it is for your benefit as well and brings peace of mind. Let us all choose to forgive and love well!

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to show you more of His love walk for your life and let Him humbly teach you.

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! Good news is that it is going to warm up. EmojiToday I have a treatment and then plan to do some baking and writing.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Once we come to know the Lord personally, do we realize that we are ambassadors for Him? Paul says in II Cor. 5:20, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” The other morning as I had my devotions, I read in two different places that we represent Christ as His ambassadors and have a wonderful message to share with others. This is an important ministry for the Lord wants to use us to draw others to Him. The way we live our lives should help others have a picture of Christ’s character and love and give them a desire to also find peace and joy in the Lord.

As an ambassador, our aim is not to serve ourselves but to represent the one who is Love. We are meant to be a light to help show the way. In our world today, we see so many people who are lost and lonely and may not even be sure of what they are looking for. We all have that empty place that is within us that only the Lord can fill. Until we receive the Lord, that hollow feeling will persist and we find ourselves searching and incomplete. But then one day an ambassador comes along, could be a friend, a pastor or even a stranger, who shares that we can know the Lord personally and all we have to do confess our sins and open our hearts to receive Him. Once we take that step, we are never the same again, for now we live life together with the Lord who not only loves us but directs our lives and gives us purpose.

We might say for now we live in a foreign land and how can we expect our world to understand if they do not know Him. Let us live as His ambassadors and become like the One we represent. Ambassadors should be peacemakers and respectful, bringing a message of love and peace even in dangerous places. We are not to be self-seeking but serve Him who sent us. May we stand firm and represent the Lord everywhere we go!

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to help you be a good Ambassador that reflects Him and speak His words and does deeds that point others to Him.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are keeping warm. I got to Aldi’s yesterday so am going to be busy in the kitchen this morning cooking up some meals. We have Bible Study this afternoon and we missed the last two weeks so will be great to be back.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Are we following what God has for our lives or are we settling for less? It’s sad when we only go part way into something the Lord has for us, and we fail to keep going to enter into the fulness of His plan. Maybe we settle for being mediocre and we miss the joy that could be ours if we persevered. We can do this in many ways like being a good employee rather than being an excellent one or being an elder when God called you to be a pastor, or obeying God in only certain parts of our lives. We have no idea what we miss out on when we settle for less.

I was reading a book by Joyce Meyers, and she writes about how Terah was going with his son Abram and his daughter-in-law Sarah and his grandson lot to the land of Canaan. But it says in Gen. 11:31 that when they got to Haran, they settled there. I always wondered why they didn’t go all the way. Why did they settle and miss the blessings the Lord had. When Terah died Abram and family finally moved on to Canaan, the land flowing with milk and honey but why did they wait so long.

Joyce goes on to ask why we settle for mediocrity when we could experience the best of what God has for us now. I’m sure we are all guilty of that in different ways in our lives. Mediocrity is the easier way, but we miss out on fulfillment of knowing God’s best. Maybe we let God have control of various parts of our life but not all of it. We miss out! I remember when Al and I were entering our 20’s and I was in nurses training and Al was at Augsburg college. We were in love and wanted to get married and back then I would have gotten kicked out of nursing if I married. We mulled over if we should forget our education, get married then and go to the Mission field. We prayed and prayed over that but did not have peace and took the longer road of becoming a nurse and a pastor. We were willing to go to the mission field but didn’t have the call to go and we had peace and got back to the books and waited for 3 years to get married. But we learned so much in that time that helped us in marriage and the parish.
Let us all examine our present lives to see if we are settling instead of going all the way into what God has planned.
Challenge for today: Examine your life to see if you are settling in an area of your life and ask the Lord’s help to move on.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are keeping warm on these cold days. Today I have exercise class, Craft class and later Bible Study.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
No one likes to fail and sometimes it can be very humiliating when our failure is obvious to people around us. Failure can cause our hearts to fear, block our vision and steal our hope. I read what author Sandie Freed had to say when we struggle with failure and even the fear of failure that may block us from trying again. Our fears can seem like giants and causes our faith to start shrinking and it is important that we run to the Lord and not from Him. It makes me think of a friend who displayed wooden figures of 2 men of faith, Joshua and Caleb, carrying a huge brunch of grapes on a strong branch. They went with 8 other spies to look over the land that God would give their people. Joshua and Caleb came back with a good report for they saw the people in the land as grasshoppers and later were able to enter the Promised land. The rest of the spies gave a bad report for they saw the people as giants and feared to go into the land and were never able to enter.

Maybe we are battling fear of failure and find we lack faith because of the giants in our lives. God wants us to call on Him and He has promised to hear our prayers and answer. He says in Jer. 29:11-14 that He has a wonderful plan for our future, and we are to pray and call on Him and He will answer. He will restore us and give us hope! When we focus on our past failures, we lack faith and may give excuses as to why we can’t do whatever it is God is asking of us. We have the example of Moses who when God called him to lead the people out of slavery, he said he wasn’t qualified for he was slow of speech, the people wouldn’t believe him, he wasn’t good enough etc. and yet God used Him mightily.

When God calls us to do something for Him that seems beyond our capabilities, we are not to speak negatively but to fight fear of failure with faith and believe His Word. The Lord promises to fight for us and it says in Psalm 73:26, ”My flesh and my heart may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” We may be weak, but He is strong. King David, Peter, Paul and others failed in many ways but went on to do great things for God. Like Freed said, failures of the past can cause delays, but it is not defeat if we try again, only a detour!

Challenge for today: Let us let go of past failures and ask for faith and trust to do whatever He asks of us.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy
