Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Devotions from Judy’s heart
If you are soon off to work, know that the Lord cares about your workday as much as He cares about your spiritual life. Work and faith are not separate but are to flow together. I was reading what Pastor Mark Roberts had to say about praying about our work but at the same time actively engaging in it. Prayer and action go together and just because we pray doesn’t mean that we sit idly and don’t act. God wants us to pray but also do our best as we actively do our work.

Some people pray and then wait and do nothing to help their situation. Maybe a person is nearly out of money and in need of work but never makes application online or goes to inquire at places that need workers. Yes, it is good to pray first but then we need to be open to however God seems to be leading us. Sometimes He may send the answer to our prayers without us doing anything, like a large check arriving in the mail; but most often we are to actively engage after we feel led by the Holy Spirit to actually do something.

Roberts tells of a woman who was praying much about a situation but otherwise quite passive. She thought she didn’t need to do anything, so Roberts gave her a plaque that read, “Pray toward heaven but row toward shore.” She didn’t appreciate the message for she thought her problem would be solved if she prayed hard and did nothing. I remember being on the lake when I saw a bad storm coming. You never saw someone row so quickly and I kept my eye on a landmark so I wouldn’t veer off to the right or left but would land at the dock in the smallest amount of time. Sometimes God requires us to do something in answer to our prayers, but our part is to keep our eyes on Him, listen carefully to His directions and obey. He answers our prayers in many ways. As it says in Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”  The Message says, “Put God in charge of your work, then what you’ve planned will take place.”

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to bless your work today, be it going to the office or taking care of toddlers and then follow through with loving action.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Waiting for the Day of Calamity

The final words of Habakkuk’s prophesy are a prayer (Hab. 3:16-19).  The prophet had begun with a cry of complaint, “How long, O Lord, must I cry for help” (1:2). God then revealed to him how he was working mightily in his day in an most unexpected manner.  Habakkuk vowed to keep watch for a move of God. “I will wait to see what the Lord says and how he will answer my complaint” (2:1).

He ends by rejoicing in the Lord. “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour” (Hab. 3:19).  “Like Habakkuk, we need to start where he begins in his dialogue with God: “How long….Why? (1:2-3).  Like Habakkuk, we need to reach the place where we can quietly say, “though….Yet I will rejoice in the Lord (3:17-18)…….Questioning God is acceptable, but refusing to trust him is our downfall, for whatever the circumstances, personal grief or national disaster, the just God, the sovereign Lord gives strength to the righteous person of faith.” (BST).

In verse 16 Habakkuk describes the impact on his awareness of God’s activity.  His heart is pounding, his lips quiver and his legs tremble.   He is deeply troubled by the prospects of God’s coming  judgement.  “I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled.” (3:16).  He knows he will be living in the midst of God’s judgment.

Habakkuk’s view of the coming days had now been deeply informed by God speaking to him.  When we experience the prospects of God’s judgment on our nation, with a fervent belief for God to will bring revival, we can experience, “deep agony of spirit for the state of God’s people and of the nation, fervent intercession for the intervention of God in saving power, increasing awareness of the inevitability of judgment and of the human suffering which accompanies it, and intense person engagement with God’s word for the present situation” (BST).

He has no idea how revival would happen.  In desperation he  cried out to God.  God gave Habakkuk assurance of his presence in the culture, but not in the way anticipated by the prophet.  Habakkuk had prayed, “In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by.  And in your anger, remember your mercy” (3:2).  The prophet did not know how his prayer would be answered.

He only could wait.  “Habakkuk has been transformed from an impatient prophet into a calm and expectant one.” Earlier Habakkuk had been told to wait for God’s will to be accomplished. Habakkuk had reminded God of past revivals. “I have heard of all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works” (3:2b).

But in the present, it did not look very hopeful. But God was at working in history to bring about his purpose, even as he has been using the Babylonians. “If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.  It will not be delayed” (2:3b).  The prophet was encouraged by God in his waiting. “But the person in right standing before God through loyal and steady believing is fully alive, really alive” (2:4 Message).

Men, this a vital lesson for us to learn.  As we pray and seek God’s will, it might seem that God is not at work in our culture.  God can change our attitude from lament to hopeful praise, knowing that God will at the right time bring revival.  Habakkuk ends with praise “yet I will rejoice in the Lord!  I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! (3:18).

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful Valentine weekend. I am feeling blessed to be well now and plan to go to Aldi’s and to my exercise class. Yesterday was the first time I had gotten out of my P.J.’s and dressed and it was a happy day! Thank you for your prayers!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How many of us say that we trust God? But then when we are in a tough place, we become fearful and anxious and forget that He is for us, with us, and will fight for us. David had many instances of danger when his life was at stake, but he knew where to go. I was reading from Psalm 31, and it spoke to me of David’s strong confidence in the Lord. He called out to the Lord for His help and was honest in his prayers and told the Lord of his situation. He wanted the Lord to deal with his enemies and stop them for they seemed to be getting the upper hand, and he feels worn out and desperate. They lied against him and ridiculed him and plotted against him and he is desperate. But…

The big BUT is that David had faith and trusted the Lord and asked for His help. He looked to Him as his safe place, his rock and fortress. His strength is in Him and David asks for His guidance and protection. He knows the Lord can keep him from hidden traps of the enemy and He renews his trust in the Lord to keep him safe. He said in verse 14-16 “But I trust in you, O Lord I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors. Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.”  His confidence is where it should be, in the Lord.  Just like us when in tight places, we may not know how the Lord will protect us, but we can put our life in His hands and ask for deliverance and trust Him. We can be honest and tell Him the situation as we see it and then give it to Him. We are not to make the mistake of taking it back into our hands but leave it with Him.

Some following words of David in the Message translation that are good for our ears, “What a stack of blessings you have piled up for those who worship you, ready and waiting for all who run to you to escape an unkind world. You hide them safely away from the opposition…Love God, all you saints; God takes care of all who stay close to Him…Be brave. Be strong. Don’t give up. Expect God to get here soon.” ….

Challenge for today: Tell the Lord when you sense the enemy is coming against you and renew your trust in the Lord for His deliverance.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day. Al and I are both feeling better and very thankful. I don’t want to take health for granted and am so grateful to have more energy again. I plan to do some catch up and clean up around here and that will feel great.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
As I was reading the book of I Peter recently, a short verse from I Peter 5:7 stood out to me: “Live carefree before God’ He is most careful with you.” Peter is writing to the church who is in exile, but He wants them to know, even though they are scattered, they are not forgotten by God. The Father has His eye on them, and he exhorts them to live as His obedient children.

I can’t help but note that Peter himself has been radically changed by the Lord from an impulsive man, prideful and confident in himself, is now humble and dependent on the Holy Spirit and concerned for others to live out their days pursuing the Lord. He tells them in Chapter 4 to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what they want and learn to think like Jesus, as they are being weaned from the expectation of getting their own way.

In our day, how do we live carefree before God rather than living for ourselves and doing whatever we feel like doing? What does a life shaped like God look like and how do we practice it in our everyday life?  What first comes to mind is to forgive like Jesus who freely forgives us. We don’t need to keep rehearsing in our minds what someone else did to hurt us but to let it go and forgive without giving thought of how to get even. When we trust God to handle the situation and pray for those who have wounded us, we are living carefree in His grace. Another way may be to have a heart of gratitude. We take time to recognize how much the Lord has blessed us instead of thinking what we don’t have or wish we had. We can show our gratitude with praise as we express thankfulness all throughout our day. That entails looking for good things throughout our day and thank those also who the Lord may be using to bless us. We also will live life carefree when we live in awe of His presence and recognize His mighty power as we fully trust Him. Let us enjoy the Lord each day and live carefree knowing He loves us, listens to us and is waiting to help us draw closer to Him.

Challenge for today: Memorize I Peter 5:7 and give praise to Him throughout your carefree day.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy Valentine’s Day to you! Each of us, whether single or married, is unconditionally loved by our Heavenly Father and we are treasured and valued. Al and I will be celebrating in our apartment and going out to dinner one fine day when we both feel 100% !!!!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Marriage seems to be on decline these days and many choose not to marry or wait until they are much older before making a commitment. In 1970, 83% of men were married by the time they were 30 but the figure for Millennials born in1980 is only 25%. I must admit I am a cheerleader for traditional marriage and for faithful relationships which seems to in the minority today. I am reading Oldfield’s book, Fully Alive and she explores various viewpoints but comes back to waiting until marriage for sexual intimacy and to be committed to one person for life. She calls sex without commitment lust as it tends to leave many wounded, for there is not an awareness of our partner’s personhood.

Even on college campuses, students are saying sex is too available and most often removed from commitment; it especially leaves women more vulnerable. But those who desire to be committed for life and loved by one person should not feel shameful for if we are followers of Christ, we are to follow His moral laws. Sex is wonderful and a powerful gift, but we are not to use others as objects like a sex toy but treat them as sacred.

When we commit to someone else, we are promising to care and support each other and be faithful. We are to protect and encourage and cheer for one another. Like Oldfield said, “Sex can be a source of blessing and, one of the deepest and most beautiful forms of human connection.” She goes on to say that it can also cause harm and disconnect us from ourselves and others if we go against the grain of our souls. Sex is not just sex, but commitment, sharing deeply, awareness of the other. Let us value marriage and not treat others like sex toys but with value and dignity. Jesus’ way is always best!

Challenge for today:  whether you are single or married, follow God’s design for sex and marriage.
Blessings on this Valentine’s Day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Thank you for your prayers for Susan as I was able to talk to her yesterday. Her nurse dialed the phone for her and so we were able to talk a long while. She is thankful for your prayers and sounded happy and just great. She voiced that she had the best nurse ever, care was wonderful, food good etc. I still don’t have the name of the hospital or her room number, but she will let me know by the next call. Right after her call friends knocked on our door with a bag of groceries of just the things we were running out of. Infact, I had finished the broth Ann made for me in the morning and then we got delicious soup, salad, fruit etc. If that wasn’t enough our son called after that, so it was raining blessings all afternoon. EmojiEmojiEmojiEmoji
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How often do we settle for partial truth that only leaves us with anxiety and frustration? Jesus said He is the way the truth and the life and no one come to the Father, except through Him. (John 14:6) Jesus is truth and I would suspect we all are guilty of accepting only partial truth at times, which ends up causing us great harm. For example, we may say we know God loves us, but in our hearts have a hard time believing He loves us when we fail. So, we end up trying to earn God’s love because we believe the enemy’s lie rather than the truth of what God’s word says.
It is important that we all are truth seekers basing our confidence in the Lord. The Word is to be our guide in our daily lives, for if the Word says it, it is truth. We don’t need to check with what our culture says as it often opposite of what God says and His word trumps all. Life actually gets simplified when we accept that God’s word is true and live in harmony with what it says. Our circumstances and our feelings are not to dictate because God’s Word is the only truth that really matters. We may not feel like God loves us, but we have only to turn to the familiar John 3:16 to find that He loves us so much He sent His son to die for us. The enemy likes to play with our emotions and cause us to doubt what God says.

There are many sayings in our culture that are not based on the Word of truth like “If it feels good, do it!” If you have tried that you know it can get you into a lot of trouble. Or what about “Follow your heart!” Sounds nice but our feelings and desires are not always the best guide for what we should do, and often it can be the opposite. Or how about the one that may be the most misquoted, “Money is the root of all evil.” No, it is not wrong to have wealth but is the love of money that can come before the Lord.

Let us live our lives based on the Word of God, not our feelings or our culture, and be done with partial truth.

Challenge for today: Receive God’s truth for your life and reject what doesn’t agree with His Word.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope your day is full of purpose. I felt like the watchmen in scripture that wait for the morning as the night was long with coughing, fever etc. But I had lots of sleep yesterday and hope that I am on the mend. Al is better but is having someone preach for him today, so he doesn’t bring any sickness over to Assisted Living.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How do we live our lives each day? Do we have purpose, or do we just live for immediate pleasures and waste our time without taking into account what is most important. I am still reading in Ecclesiastes and King Solomon sure found out that wealth and momentary pleasures do not satisfy our souls but leave us feeling empty apart from the Lord.

We are told to count our days and center our life on our Creator for a life without Him is lonely and unfulfilling. Solomon said in Eccl. 12:1, “Honor and enjoy your Creator while you ‘re still young. Before the years take their toll and your vigor wanes.”  We must not waste our lives away for the very decisions we make now will impact our future. We will have to live with the choices we make and some are irreversible. We may have brief times of happiness with momentary pleasures, but it will leave us feeling hopeless and that there has to be more to life than what we are experiencing.

King Solomon goes on to say his final word in verse 13-14, “Fear God. Do what He tells you. And that’s it. Eventually God will bring everything that we do out into the open and judge it according to its hidden intent, whether it’s good or evil.” Every day we need to be praying and asking the Lord what His will is for our life and to follow in obedience. I just read about a pastor who was telling another pastor how disappointed he was at the message he just heard from a world-renowned speaker. This particular pastor had traveled a great distance and spent money to hear the pastor who had a large following and kept emphasizing the secret, “I pray: I obey. I pray; I obey.” The pastor listening kept thinking there had to be more to the secret of such church growth, but the message remained the same, I pray, I obey.

Isn’t that what the Lord says to all of us. We are to seek Him and follow in obedience to do whatever He tells us. As we obey our life will be lived with purpose and enjoyment of knowing our Father’s pleasure.

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord what His desire is for you this day and follow in obedience.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

February 11. 2025

Dear Ones,
Hope we are all open to whatever the Lord has for us today. I rather think for me it is another day to rest and be quiet as no one would desire to be around me yet with my coughing, fever, etc. I haven’t gotten dressed for 3 days and we missed a Valentine dress up party last night. Emoji One friend emailed that there are others that are very sick, but we all stay in our rooms so as not to spread anything.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Do we really want to know God’s will in our lives and dare we ask for wisdom and understanding as we may get an answer that is not always to our liking. The Spirit wants to guide and lead us and Paul prayed for the Colossians and it says in Col. 1:9, “asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him: bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God…” May we want what God wants and be able to distinguish God’s voice from that of the world.

Jesus may come to us in new ways, and we will miss out if we are not open. Sometimes He brings something new to our attention and we have to decide if we will be in step with the Spirit or if we will march to our own beat. God wants to continually renew us and that means we have to be open to new things that we may not have experienced before. Maybe we have a dream that seems to have deep meaning, or a vision that seems important. Do we welcome such ways and ask the Lord to tell us what they might mean, or do we just brush it all aside? Each time we see the Lord at work we have to decide how we will respond. It’s quite easy if it is familiar but what if is vastly different and we wonder, why are you choosing to work with that group and blessing them? However, the Lord is in charge and can do as He pleases, and we decide if we are going to leave our comfy seats and go join what He is doing.

In the days to come, I believe we are going to need one another, and it isn’t going to matter if they are part of our denomination, our tradition, our view of the end times etc. We are to join in heart to one another and have openness to what the Holy Spirit is doing and encourage one another. When Al was a youth pastor, we experienced revival with the youth of our church, but it was also happening amongst the Catholics and together it was even richer.  The Lord may bring us all into better balance today as we mix together with others not just like us. Al and I have experienced many different traditions and greater richness because of it. Let us be humble and not think we have a monopoly on the truth but welcome the Holy Spirit wherever He is working and join in.

Challenge for today: Be open to where you see the Holy Spirit working and join in heart!
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Are My Feet Slipping?

There are occasions on the spiritual path chosen for us, when we will slip and fall. In the well known 23rd Psalm, we’re told, “He leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul, He guides me along the right paths, for his name’s sake” (Ps. 23:1-2).  There are over 20 references to a path in the Psalms.  “You make known to me the path of life,  you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Ps 16:11). In Psalm 18:36, we are given assurance, “You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.”  One the most intriguing is Psalm 77:19, “Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.”  The path God provides is indeed secure.

But when I  was meditating on Ps. 73, I became aware of how easy I can slip, if my focus is not on the Lord. “But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.  For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”  The Message is blunt, “But I nearly missed it, missed seeing his goodness.  I was looking the other way, looking up to the people at the top, envying the wicked who had it made, who have nothing to worry about, not a care in the whole wide world.”  The Psalmist was slipping of the path.  “The wicked get by with everything; they have it made, piling up riches.  I ‘ve been stupid to play by the rules; what has it gotten me.” (vs 12-13).

Then in the presence of the Lord, the psalmist wakes up. “Then I saw the whole picture: The slippery road you’ve put them on, with a final crush in a ditch of delusions.  In the blink of an eye, disaster!” (Ps 73:18-19 MSG)  He is transparent about his spiritual condition. “When I was beleaguered and bitter, totally consumed by envy, I was totally ignorant, a dumb ox in your very presence (v21).  But he was aware of God’s presence.  “You’ve taken my hand.  You wisely and tenderly lead me, and then you bless me.”

God was all he needed.  As a man in the fourth quarter of his life, the words of verse 26 are reassuring, “When my skin sags and my bones get brittle, God is rock-firm and faithful.”  As for those who are unfaithful.  “Those who left you are falling apart!  Deserters, they’ll  never be heard from again.”  In response to God mercy, the Psalmist after nearing slipping on the path of life, declares, “But I’m  in the very presence of God – oh, how refreshing it is!  I’ve made Lord God my home.  God, I’m telling the world what you do! ( v 28).

Jeremiah gives us warning about those who are wicked. “‘I have seen their despicable acts right here in my temple,'” says the Lord.  “Therefore the paths they take will become slippery.   They will be chased through the dark, and there they will fall.  For I will bring disaster upon them at the time fixed for their punishment.” (Jer. 23:12 NLT).  May we not be caught on this slippery path.

God will be there when we seem to be slipping. “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you.  He will not permit the godly to slip and fall” (Ps 55:22 NLT).  Knowing God has rescued us, we walk in the presence of the Lord. “For you have rescued me from death; you have kept my feet from slipping.  So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light” (Ps 56:13 NLT).

Dear Ones,

Devotions from Judy’s heart
True love will be evidenced in our lives and actions if it is real. Dr Colbert who wrote Health Zone writes that there isn’t any such thing as deedless, wordless love. True love will manifest in our behavior. Just having knowledge doesn’t change anyone but in the doing that brings change. As I write this Al is sick and I am doing all the things I can to help him get well. I could say, “Hon, I love you so much!” and then proceed to go on with my own life without taking into consideration his needs. Instead, I am trying to give him all the healthful foods, supplements, ointments, healing oils, going to the store for needed things and praying for him etc.  John wrote in I John 3:18, “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

Let us all ask ourselves if we do more than just say we love the Lord and others. Do we express His love and do His work and desire to bless those around us? As we daily read the Word, it should make a difference and motivate us to bear fruit in our lives and look for opportunities to serve others.

True love will express gratitude not only to the Lord but also to others. As we do this and share with others how we appreciate them or are grateful for something they have done, we will find we feel closer to them. We may do this verbally or in our actions and we will find we have a deeper connection and bond with them. Also, as we have an attitude of gratitude we will have a more positive attitude, better health, less stress, and a great sense of purpose.

The more we love the more we naturally want to give and serve others. Jesus loves us most of all and finds so many ways to bless us. The early church in Acts also knew what that was about for they had great joy in giving freely to all those among them that had needs. Like Colbert wrote, “To love is to give whenever and whatever the Lord leads us to give.” If you are aware of the 5 love languages, you can even express love in the way it means the most to those around you. Let us put others before ourselves and love with Jesus’ love.

Challenge for today: Commit each day to let God’s love flow through you in words and action.
Have a wonderful week and prayers and love, Judy
