Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! Enjoy the lovely fall days before the cold weather and snow hit. The Paul Bunyan trail is gorgeous, even as we walked it with 20 mph winds yesterday. Today I hope to do food prep, tackle some cleaning of cupboards and do some studying.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How many of us live in the moment and enjoy what is happening right now, without thinking of what is next? Rush! Rush! Rush! Isn’t that what much of our lives are about? We hurry to try to accomplish what is on our mental list for the day and often multitask while missing the moment we are in. As I write to you, I also include myself as I often try to do too many things and decide to do one more thing rather than enjoy what is happening right now.

But we can change our hurried pace and at times unplug from our electronic devices and find balance and enjoyment in the moment that is. Maybe we first have to ask ourselves if we are overcommitted and need to say no to things that we do just to please others; or maybe say no to things we are to do in the future but the time is not now. Sometimes couples with several small children compare their life to couples who seem so fancy free with children who are grown and on their own. Their time will come but it is not now.

The biggest factor to ask ourselves when we feel overextended is if we are in God’s plan for us. If we doing our own thing then why should He give us energy for something that may lead us away from Him. We need to be led by the Spirit and as Paul said in Romans 8:14, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”  When we seek His will not our own selfish will, we can enjoy fully the present moment, for He is in it. When I am on God’s schedule, I am amazed at how things flow together and I accomplish more than if I press my own agenda. Let us enjoy each thing the Lord would have us do.

Challenge for today: When you feel yourself rushing around, pray and slow down and fully enter into what is happening right then.

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake today to realize the power of prayer. Al will be going to meet with men this morning and I will have donuts waiting when he gets home. We have Bible study here this afternoon and maybe time to vote too.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I don’t like to give attention to the enemy but on the other hand we are not to be ignorant of his schemes for he is always trying to trip us up. It says in II Cor. 2:11, “So that we would not be outwitted by Satan for we are not ignorant of his designs.” In the Greek the word for ignorant means without knowledge or understanding of. We need to be aware of the way Satan thinks and plots, so he doesn’t take advantage of us. I am reading Pastor Dutch Sheets’ book, “Watchman Prayer” on how to stand guard and protect our family, home and community, and nation. We only have to see how the enemy has attacked our families and nation and the need to pray and intercede today. Since it says in the Word we are not to be ignorant of Satan, then the Lord must want to reveal his schemes to us.

Dutch writes we must learn the power of prayer and take back what Satan has seized of our nation and world. We need to expose our enemy and have our eyes opened and realize the power of our prayers. If you remember the Columbine High tragedy, the deaths of those martyrs resulted in youth picking up the torch and many responding with total commitment to the Lord. They had Torch Grab rallies and many accepted the call to reach their generation for Christ.

A friend wrote that her church had a conference on a Friday night and Saturday where there were about 100 young people in the ages of 20’s – 40’s who were present worshiping, listening and taking notes. There were topics presented about being in the presence of the Lord, spiritual attacks, attending to the needs of others, being Spirit led, consistency in time spent with the Lord through prayer, and Bible reading, worship etc. They want to make a difference in our world and it made me think of the song, “All to Jesus, I surrender, all to Him I freely give: I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live.” The chorus goes, “I surrender all, I surrender all. All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.”  It goes on to ask to be filled with love and power and it is a need we all have if we are going to stand in His power against the enemy!

Challenge for today: Ask for Holy Spirit power to stand for the Lord and not to give in to Satan’s tactics.

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a day of feeling loved and knowing you have worth. I plan to do food prep and go to Exercise class, and later craft time and Bible study.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
We can read of the people who are making it on the stock market big time and those who have multibillions of dollars but what about the poor around us. Prov. 21:13, “Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.” The poor are always around us and the Lord has special concern for the poor and so should we. It isn’t just poor in worldly goods, but the poor may be those who seemingly have nothing to offer but do they?!! Yes!
Our grandson had a part time job spending nights at group homes where there were severely handicapped people who can do nothing for themselves. They had to be fed and bathed and dressed and one might think what can they offer others. But though they are weak and vulnerable they have much to teach us.

There are communities that minister to the poor with physical and mental disabilities and try to give them a family-like environment to give them a sense of their worth. If we are humble enough and receive them, we will discover hidden beauty in their weakness and be led closer to the Lord. Even though in the world’s eyes, they are so often rejected, they can be a source of hope and life to us, for they open our hearts to God’s love and compassion. Jesus invited all to follow Him and we all have a choice to make if we will choose Him and say no to the world.

Everyone wants to feel valued and loved and when we follow Jesus, we must accept others and know that they all have value. He loves those who are poor and have mental disabilities etc. as much as He loves us. We can grow together if each is free to be ourselves and know we have worth. We say we love Jesus but are our hearts humble and open to love others whom He loves but our society sees as worth very little? Perhaps we may discover our own inner pain and that we are the ones that are poor and needy also. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 5:3) Let us open our hearts to receive others and love them as we love ourselves.

Challenge for today: Celebrate who God made you to be and also be humble to receive the gift He has placed in the hearts of all those we meet.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Devotions from Judy’s heart
In our world today there is so much chaos and destruction and many live in fear of what is going to happen. But we don’t have to live with anxiety when we know the Lord, for He is our place of refuge. A song found in Psalm 46 was sung and it gives us peace that no matter what happens God is with us. Verse 1 & 2 and 7reassures us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea…The Lord of hosts is with us the God of Jacob is our refuge.” Even if the mountains crumble or our world comes to an end, we do not have to be afraid, for we are the Lord’s. He is our help, our mighty fortress and High Tower. We can hide in Him and not be anxious but still, giving Him all our concerns.
No matter what things in our lives weigh on our hearts down, we are to give it all to the Lord. In fact, we must get out of the way and run to Him and hand everything over. That is called surrender!  I give up, Lord, trying to figure things out myself, for only you know what is ahead and what is best; so I place everything in your capable hands. Sometimes it takes a long time to get to that place for we often try to control what is happening, but it doesn’t work. He wants us to lean into Him and rest in Him and that is where peace is found.
Like the song goes, “You are my hiding place… You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance whenever I am afraid. I will trust in you… Let the weak say I am strong in the strength of the Lord.”

Let us not run elsewhere, seeking comfort in the wrong places, hiding out where it is not safe, but let us run to the Lord and trust Him with all that concerns us. All we have to do is simply ask Him to be our safe place, our refuge. I think that is why I love the stories of King David so much. He was so often fleeing for his life and in dangerous situations, but he knew where to go. When we are in the center of God’s will, that is the safest place to be and one of peace.

Challenge for today: Find your refuge and safe place in the Lord and go first to Him.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful and relaxing weekend! The weather is turning colder now and we become more aware that Fall is truly here. So beautiful too. This morning I am going to bake and go to Aldi’s and my exercise class and maybe take out our warm coats etc.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
The election is not far off now and during this time it is important that we remember that God has the power to bring us together. We need to be in much prayer for only He can help us through our differences and unite us together to stand for truth and peace. I want to share the sixth prayer by Whitney Hopler, a Prayer for our Leaders and Authorities.

“Dear God, we pray for all those in positions of leadership and authority within our nation-both current and future leaders- asking that you endow them with wisdom, integrity, and hearts of service. May they seek to lead with humility and a genuine desire to serve the common good. Romans 13:1 reminds us: ‘Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.’

We trust in your sovereignty, God, and we ask that you guide our leaders to make decisions that reflect your will and purpose. We commit to keep praying regularly for our leaders, as you call us to do in I Timothy 2:1-2: ‘I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intersession, and thanksgiving be made for all people- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.’

Give them the courage to stand up for justice and truth, even when doing so is difficult. Surround them with wise counsel and help the to listen to the needs and concerns of all people. May they be instruments of your peace and agents of positive change in our society. God, we also pray for those who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to support our leaders and help our government function well. Bless their efforts and protect them as they carry out their duties. Thank you, our sovereign God, Amen. “

Challenge for today: Pray this prayer morning and evening

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to see how things in your past can work out for your good. I plan to clean the apartment today and do food prep and go for another beautiful walk on the trail. Let us not forget to pray for all those suffering in the south and give as we are able for the needs are many.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
If we had a choice, would we choose an easy life without pain and suffering and plenty of life’s goods? Most of us would say yes but the Lord loves us and refines us, so instead He may send us afflictions. As it says in Isaiah 48:10, “I’ve refined you, but not without fire. I’ve tested you like silver in the furnace of affliction.”  Farther in the chapter it says, “I am God, your God, who teaches you how to live right and well. I show you what to do, where to go.”

Mark Roberts writes on Crosswalk.com about the furnace of adversity. It doesn’t sound like something we would jump up and down and say, “Bring it on!“ Many of us avoid whatever is painful and want to get out of suffering as quickly as possible. But when life is painless and rather easy, we can get focused on such trivial things, our looks, our possessions, the latest things and miss what is important. So, God may use fire to refine us and help us get rid of the dross and see what is truly meaningful.

God often uses the avenue of pain in our lives to bring us good and to cause us to be brought closer to Him. If we think back on our own lives, we may have wondered at the time where God was when we suffered from covid or cancer etc. But suffering helps us to see what is most important and we discover that the things we were worried about before seems trivial in comparison now. The Lord doesn’t have us go through the furnace to destroy us but rather to refine us and purify us and help us become more like Him. We also experience God in deeper ways and I believe it also helps us to relate with empathy to others who are suffering. When I have pain, I am reminded to pray often during the day for a friend who lives in pain every day and to lift her before the Lord.

Let us patiently accept our times in the furnace and reap the blessings God has for us.

Challenge for today: When going through times of affliction, ask the Lord what He desires for you to learn from it and then thank Him that He will walk with you all the way!

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend to you! What gorgeous weather we have been having and the Paul Bunyan trail is just beautiful with color. But at the same time let us not forget those down south who are suffering from the hurricanes without water and shelter and food. 40 Million are without power.  Pray! Pray! and give to those organizations helping.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Feelings are important but they don’t trump God’s promises. In fact, our feelings can many times be fickle and the enemy loves to mess with them as we believe what he says over what God says. That results in us living in fear and anxiety.

Maybe we wake up one day with thoughts of dread for what is on our schedule. As we dwell on the “what ifs”, we find we get anxious and expect the worst to happen. But if we are wise, we will catch and reject the enemy’s tactic quickly and focus on what the Lord says. He tells us to ask of Him for Jesus said in John 16:22-24, “This is what I want you to do: ask the Father for whatever is keeping with the things I’ve revealed to you. Ask in my name, according to my will, and He’ll most certainly give it to you. Your joy will be a river overflowing its banks.”

We know it is God’s will that we choose to believe His promises over what the enemy is whispering to us. It is our choice to believe the Word and receive His grace and let go of the negative thoughts of doom. When fear tries to take over our thoughts we can make a shift and quickly ask the Holy Spirit for faith and right thoughts that line up with the Word.  Yes, like a couple days ago I woke up at 5 a.m. to send out over 100 e-mails ready to go and couldn’t get online. My thoughts immediately went, Oh no! Will I have to spend time with the Geeks today and waste my whole day! But I told Al the enemy is trying to get a foothold and I want to trust the Lord and not go with negative thoughts. Al tried things on my computer also, but we soon discovered our router was not working right and he put a call in to CTC and later that morning I was up and running again, along with a host of others having trouble. My heart was filled with such gratitude to the Lord.

Every time we choose to believe God rather than our feelings of the enemy’s forebodings, our faith becomes stronger. We are told to ask the Lord and to cast our care on Him, knowing He will either remove the problem or give us grace to go through it and make us stronger. Let us do the latter!

Challenge for today: Choose carefully and quickly to believe God’s promises over the enemy’s whisperings!

Dear Ones,
Hope you are mindful of God’s grace as you go about your day. Al will be going to men’s group and am going to make egg dishes and have a treatment this morning; this afternoon we have Bible Study. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost homes and loved ones during the hurricanes and let us all pray much.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Don’t we need to be reminded often of the wonderful gift of grace that God gives to us. We may like to meditate especially on grace and sing songs of grace when we have blown it in some sinful behavior or attitude. It’s like a wakeup call to the fact that we are all needy and sinful and need grace, every single day! But the good news is as Paul says in Rom. 6:8-9, “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you’re not under the law but under grace.” When we know Him, we are all under grace and His grace brings us freedom, not to do just as we please, but the power to do His will from our hearts.
Recently I read Psalm 25 and in verse 7 David is asking the Lord “Remember not the sins (the laps and frailties) of my youth or my transgressions according to your mercy and steadfast love remember me, for Your goodness’ sake, O Lord.” He is needing God’s mercy and grace which he could not earn but simply accept as a gift, His unmerited favor. Maybe all of us forget at times that God loves us, not because of what we do but for who we are in Him, for we cannot ever earn His love. Some think God loves them more if they try to do everything right…go to church, read their Bible every day, volunteer to help the poor etc. but that is not so. He loves us even when we don’t get things right, so why not rest from striving because He loves us unconditionally and perfectly. It is our pride that makes us feel we have to earn his love, for we were meant to simply receive it and let it fill our whole being. Like I read today, that nothing we do can make Him love us less, and nothing we do can make Him love us more.

In my own life when I fail and ask forgiveness, I realize more the depth of His love for He pours out His grace to me and looks at me as if I never did it. Isn’t that awesome?

Challenge for today: Read Eph. 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God-not the result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to trusting the Lord for all things in your day. I plan to go to Exercise class and Craft class and later Bible study. Your question for this week is, when do you feel most vulnerable to the enemy and how do you respond and overcome? Sorry this is late as our router was not working this morning.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Are their times that we feel the enemy breathing down on us and fear takes hold as he attacks our minds and fills our thoughts with “what-ifs.” At such times what do we do? Do we believe his lies or are we like King David who turned to the Lord and wrote Psalm 56 when he was fleeing from Saul and was in enemy territory of the Philistines?

One thing I admire of David, is how honest and forth right he is with God. He tells his exact predicament and that he feels trampled and oppressed by his enemies. He knows they are waiting to get him, but he goes on to say that at such times he puts his confidence in God. In Psalm 56 verses 2-3 his words, “O Most High, when I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust I am not afraid; what can flesh do to me?” David turns his thoughts to the One who understands and can help him. He shares what is on his heart and how the enemy is twisting his words and finding ways to trip him up and even have his life. But he asks God to intervene and bring them down. He puts his confidence in God and with His help he will rely on Him to cause his enemy to retreat. He knows that God cares and has even kept count of his tears and put them in His bottle. David’s prayer reaches God for he is totally honest with Him and is leaning into Him.

When we are also in situations of fear, let us be like David who recalls how God is with him and puts his full trust in Him and gives praise. We will also find it helpful if we are in a tough spot, to remember how the Lord has been with us in the past and thank Him for His deliverance; but also, we can anticipate and praise Him for how He will do it now.

Challenge for today: When fearful thoughts come to you in your day, pray David’s prayer in Psalm 56:2-3.

October 8, 2024

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a great day! I am still catching up around here and plan to do some cooking and baking, cards, studying etc.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Haven’t we all had times when we are surprised by the Lord? He speaks to us through our daily circumstances or maybe a word from a brother or sister who has no awareness that it is hitting a need that we have etc. I love that the Lord uses so many means to get through to us that surprises us.

While Al and I were in Iowa over the weekend to watch our granddaughter play soccer, we along with her parents, cheered for her and her team. It ended up 0 to 0 and we got to see Lily after the game and walked with her to her Kansas State team bus. Al and I went to find our car and then before going home we went once more to the stadium. But what had been filled with people just a short time before, was now completely empty. It gave me a rather eerie feeling for how quickly things changed. Now there was no crowd cheering, just emptiness.

My thoughts went to the end day when we will stand before the Lord and give account of our life. For those who know the Lord, we will only be judged by the works we have done or failed to do; but for those who have not received the Lord, there will be eternal judgment and being sent into the outer darkness of hell. Even though they had been cheered on by the crowds prior, they now have to stand alone before God who judges rightly. No more chances given, for the arena is empty of those who were on their side.

As I thought about this, I just prayed that I would not fail to share the Lord with others. They may be cheered on by others of the world now, but that is all going to pass away. Then one day they have to give account before the righteous judge. As it says in II Cor. 6:2, “Behold, now is the favorable time: behold now is the day of salvation.” So let us all not be silent, but share the Lord every chance we get.

Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to open up opportunities for you to witness of Him to all those around you and give you holy boldness.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy
