Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Happy weekend! Hope you have a refreshing one. We are suppose to get more snow and flakes are beginning to fall. I am hoping Ann will be able to get to Brainerd as planned today and come over this afternoon. I have Women’s Bible Study this morning and the lesson is on Mary and Martha.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How often do we hear when leaving church, and maybe have said from our own lips, the worship wasn’t great today or the sermon didn’t seem to connect with where I am at, or I almost fell asleep as church was so boring! Then, blame is put on the pastor, the worship team etc. as our expectations weren’t met. But we have it all wrong as Pastor Joe McKeever writes on Crosswalk.com.  Worship is not about us and getting our needs met, it’s about giving the Lord the glory that He deserves. King David had it right in Psalm 29:2 (ESV), when he said, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.”
Worship is not at all about getting, but rather it is all about our giving. We are giving to the Lord praise and the worship of our hearts, expressing that He is worthy of all honor and glory. Think of Paul and Silas who worshipped the Lord when they were imprisoned and their feet were in stocks. That is less than ideal circumstances and yet they worshipped.
Worship is a verb; it is something we do, not something done to us. Even if the preacher doesn’t show up and the sermon is read to us or if the worship team is not the best, or the little children are noisy, we can still worship. We can decide if we are going to worship and not give concern if everything is to our liking. Our focus must be on the Lord and the distractions will fade into the background.
I get convicted some Sundays when I observe one of the men on worship team that sings with all his heart. I check myself and know I need to let go more and just focus on the Lord in worship and praise, and as the song goes:
“And here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
   You’re altogether lovely
   Altogether worthy
   Altogether wonderful to me.”
Let us all go to church with the desire to simply worship Him from the depth of our souls.
Challenge for today: Sing a worship song to the Lord with your eyes closed and heart open.
Blessings on  your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy Weekend to you! The sun is shining and so beautiful out my window with more fresh snow. I just finished making Beef Stroganoff and later hope to go shopping.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Are we on God’s time or our time? That is a question we need to ask ourselves as we go about our day and to make adjustments when needed. Jesus was always on His Father’s time, even though He was interrupted often; but He came to do the Father’s will. Even when pressured by His brothers to go to Jerusalem ahead of time, He did not give in but answered them and said in John 7:6 (ESV), “My time has not yet come but your time is always here.”
I want to be on God’s time, but I know I often fail and have to ask forgiveness; although I missed it this time, I want to listen better next time with a willingness to change when He interrupts what I had planned.
One Sunday at church Al and I knew we needed to change the paraments after the service. It was a special  Sunday with red paraments and we were to change them to green for the next Sunday. During church we reminded each other that we would do at the close of the service before we went to coffee. That was our time! But when we got up to leave, we noticed a new couple sitting behind us and introduced ourselves and got acquainted. We didn’t want to leave them there as the church had emptied and my eyes met Al with the knowledge that we needed to let go of our time. We took them to coffee and heard more about their lives and introduced them to others… and the paraments were done later on God’s time. This story is just one simple example but a reminder that we need to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit to know what is in God’s timing for our lives.
So many examples in Scripture of the right time. Wise King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3 that there is a time and season for every matter under heaven.  There is also a time coming when Jesus will come again and it says in Mark 13:32 (ESV), “But concerning that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” God’s timing is perfect and let us seek to know His timing in our lives.
Challenge for today: Ask the Holy Spirit to make you sensitive to God’s timing and let go of yours.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a joyfilled day! I just went downstairs for Donuts and Al is at Men’s group but will love one when he gets home! I made some Chocolate Peanutty Bars while he is gone and this afternoon we have Bible Study.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
We can so glibly talk about God’s love and yet we have so much to learn of love, for God is the source of all love. We see in our culture the shallowness of our own selfish love that is fickle and open to change which becomes evident in the soaring divorce rate. Yet the searching goes on to find deep love that is found only in the One who is love.
I am reading the book, In the School of Love, that is all about the Cistercians who go back to the year 1080 and believed that love needs to be taught. They saw love as God’s very being and the exchange between the 3 persons of the Trinity. They believed that we can only become what we are created to be by loving God with all our being and our neighbor as ourselves. Quite different than our human love that is turned back on itself and needs to be reoriented and set free.
The Holy Spirit wants to be our teacher in helping us to love God from the depths of our being and to enjoy Him and live for Him. God was from the beginning and always was. He is good, He is kind, He is mercy, and His love can’t be measured. He is all and more of what our soul longs for. Nothing else can take His place in our lives. If we don’t come to love Him, we will always feel empty. To know God, we must also come to know ourselves for we were created in His image and our worth is in Him. His desire it that we become more like Him and be united in spirit. He wants us to give Him our whole heart. If we choose to go our own way, we will miss what our heart is really longing for.
Even if we feel like the Prodigal son that left his father and went far away, we can return to Him and know that He is waiting for us with outreached arms to receive us. Let us humbly return and let Him give us a heart of love. As David said in Psalm 23:2-3 “He offers a resting place for me in His luxurious love. His tracks take me to an oasis of peace, the quiet brook of bliss. That’s where He restores and revives my life. He opens before me pathways to God’s pleasure and leads me along in his footsteps of righteousness so that I can bring honor to His name.”
Challenge for today: Read the Word not to know more, but to know God more and His love!
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a great day. Al is giving a communion service next door this morning at Assisted Living. I just finished baking S.F. Choc chip cookies and Sweet potato rounds and soon going to my exercise class. This afternoon is crafts and then the soup supper and service. A rich day.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Are we willing to change? When the Holy Spirit puts His finger on something in our lives that needs to go, are we willing to release it? When we hold things loosely in our lives, it becomes easier to let go; but if we are hanging on tightly, those things can become idols and are difficult to release. It could be a relationship that has become our focus and more important to us than doing what God says. Or maybe that we try to control our circumstances, or consider our time is more important than God’s time. But if anything comes before the Lord, we need to let it go!
In Matt. 3:2 (God’s Word), John the Baptist says, “Turn to God and change the way you think and act, because the kingdom of God is near.” Like me, maybe you hear the Holy Spirit telling you at times to “Let go!” and change your thinking and your actions. Sometimes the Lord puts others in my life who are so giving and I see my selfishness. Or I rush through things and find I am trying to control my day rather than taking the Lord’s hand and letting Him lead me. When thoughts come to us of change needed, we are not to just pass it off, but be willing to change how we think and how we behave.
Recently I read of Shellie Arnold who has a compassionate daughter who would even give the shoes off her feet if she saw someone in need. As a small child she would save up her pennies in a jar to give to missionaries when it was told there would be a special offering. Since she didn’t have much to give, she drew pictures and sold them and gave all the money to Missions, without thinking to keep any for herself. I want to be more like that. That child’s actions spoke to me. There are times I sense the Holy Spirit saying to give to a particular person, although I barely know them, but there is joy when I respond quickly.
Let us all be quick to respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and allow the Lord to change us. Let us hold everything we have loosely so that our hand is free to take the Lord’s.
Challenge for today: Open your heart to the Lord to work change in you where needed.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a day of sunshine. I will be doing some food prep this  morning and then we plan to have friends over for coffee and felllowship.
The question this week is: what area of your llfe is it most difficult to exercise patience?
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Patience! Patience! Patience! Don’t we wish we had the patience of Job who endured so much and didn’t give up? Patience is a fruit of the Spirit and one that is quite beautiful as it matures. Too often we can be like little children that want everything now and not later and often ask, “Are we there yet?” when we have just begun a trip. Or who want dessert before the main course? If we are honest, we all need to grow the fruit of patience.
I was reading what Pastor Mark Roberts from Fuller Seminary had to say about patience as he quotes I Thess. 5:14 (God’s Word), “We encourage you, brothers and sisters, to instruct those who are not living right, cheer up those who are discouraged, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.”  It isn’t easy to be patient with those who try our patience with doing things that we might think we would never do. But we must always remember that others are also likewise showing patience with us in many situations. I can picture even now that look in my mother’s eye, without a word said, that she was holding her tongue when she wanted to say something corrective to me. Patience!
Paul is giving us different situations we might have to exercise this gift, like with those who are discouraged. The Lord might have us come along side of them and speak encouragement and show concern for them. Or those who are weak, sick or old. we might give some hands-on help, taking them places and giving them of our time. And those who might be involved in sinful behavior, that we patiently pray and not give up on them.
I marvel at God’s patience with me, when I get stuck or do things over and over again that I should have moved beyond. When we get impatient, let us remember as it says in II Peter 3:9 that God is not slow to do what He promised but is patient for our sake.
Challenge for today: Thank the Lord for His patience with you and patiently help another.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

Goblin Mode

“Goblin mode” was Oxford Dictionaries’ 2022 Word of the Year. Oxford offered this choice to English speakers for the first time in its history, saying that the “Word of the Year is a word or expression reflecting the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past twelve months, one that has potential as a term of lasting cultural significance.” More than 340,000 people cast their vote.

Goblin mode as a slang term is often used in the expressions “in goblin mode’ or ‘to go goblin mode.”  It refers to “a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.” First seen on Twitter in 2009, it went viral on social media in February of 2022, seeming to capture the prevailing mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to normal life.

Ben Zimmer, American linguist and lexicographer, said: “Goblin mode really does speak to the times and the zeitgeist, and it is certainly a 2022 expression.  People are looking at social norms in new ways.  It gives people the license to ditch social norms and embrace new ones.”

Casper Grathwohl (President, Oxford Languages) said, “Given the year we’ve just experienced, ‘goblin mode’ resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point… People are embracing their inner goblin, and voters choosing ‘goblin mode’ as the Word of the Year tells us the concept is likely here to stay.”

I hope each man reading this blog rejects “goblin mode” as part of his lifestyle. Jesus tells us the exact opposite as we come to the end of the age.  In Mark 13, for example, Jesus tells us, “Watch out that no one deceives you” (v. 5).  In verse 9 we are told, “You must be on your guard.”  Later he warns us, “Be on guard! Be alert!” (v. 33).  Then he says, “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back” (v. 35).

As followers of Jesus we certainly need to reject many of our contemporary social norms and expectations. We need to be on guard and alert to not become “self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy.”   Peter gives us good advice when he tells us, “Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted.  Stay wide-awake in prayer.  Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it.  Love makes up for practically anything” (I Peter 4:7-8 – Message).

In Chapter 5, Peter warns about Satan:  “Be careful!  Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy.  He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour” (v. 8).  Could it be that God is raising up an army of men, who reject “goblin mode” as they hear the trumpet of God? They are warning people of the difficult days ahead. These men are gathering into small groups all over our nation, knowing in their hearts that the time is short.

Men, do you hear the call?  It is a call to action, to warn others being carried away and diluted by the influence of the dominant narrative. Revelation 13 describes in symbolic fashion how Satan gives power and authority to the beast: “This first beast represents governmental tyranny throughout history working against Christ and his church,” notes Nancy Guthrie. “It is political and governmental powers demanding the loyalty that belongs to Christ alone.”

Men: expose and stand against the forces of darkness that have captured much of the popular narrative in our culture.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a great weekend. We got some fresh snow in the night and more coming down all the time. I made some egg dishes this morning and not sure if I will get to my exercise class.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I think most of us would concur that America has gone far astray and has need to return to our Christian heritage and to be a nation under God again. Sometimes I remark to Al, after watching the news, that I wonder how it can get much worse in our culture. We have a vivid picture before us of what life is like when God is left out. But revival often happens when people pray and recognize that we have lost what matters most.
I am encouraged by the revival that is taking place at Asbury University and over 21 other college campuses; also, the good news that in the Philippines and India thousands are being baptized daily. God is up to something that we don’t want to miss out on.
I was reading what Dr. Roger Barrier, who is now a retired pastor from a megachurch in Tucson writes about Revivals. He studied revivals of the past of Jonathan Edwards, Charles Finney, Billy Sunday etc. but he and his wife were personally touched by the Asbury revival in 1970. It went on for 185 hours as students and faculty gave their testimonies and prayed for one another, asked forgiveness and worshiped together. Asbury students went to campuses sharing about the revival and then new ones broke out everywhere. When a team came to Baylor where Dr Barrier was, he and his wife were deeply touched and committed to full-time ministry. When this new revival broke out now at Asbury, he was thrilled but also wanted to check it was the Holy Spirit moving and not just an emotional high.
He shared the characteristics of genuine revivals of those who participate: they enter into fervent praise and prayer, and sense the presence of the Lord in a powerful way; they sincerely repent when convicted by the Holy Spirit, and thirst for God’s Word; they begin or renew a deep relationship with the Lord and share personal testimonies with gratitude; and finally have a new passion for sharing the gospel and living the Christian life. Dr Barrier believes that the Asbury Revival has all of those characteristics and is authentic.
One of his friends went to Asbury to find out for herself. Her words: “We arrived on campus at 12:30 a.m. this morning. The atmosphere was electric. Within a few minutes, it was standing room only. Singing, Cheering. Hands raised. Some people sat quietly with heads bowed. The worship was spontaneous and Spirit-led. Honestly, it felt to me like we were seeing a repeat of the Acts 2 birth of the early church. Only it’s happening again in our Gen Z generation (and beyond.) There is a hunger and a fire and a passion for what is true, and pure, and holy.” She left there praying for more of Jesus and full of hope.
Challenge for today: Pray for revival and open your heart in new ways to the Holy Spirit.

March 4, 2023

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a relaxing weekend! The apartment is filled with aroma as there is a pot of stew in the slow cooker. I also made cinnamon bread that Al has already sampled. This morning I am going to clean and maybe later go to Kohl’s as the sales are unbeliveable!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How often during the day do we fix our thoughts on the Lord? If others could be privy to our thought life, would they be surprised at how much of the time our thoughts are on worries and problems of all kinds or even on pleasures and dreams, but not on the Lord? Anything we think of more than we think of God can be in idol in our lives and rob us of a deep relationship with Him.
We are told in II Cor 10:5 that “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Perhaps all of us can say that our thoughts often run rampant and we can dwell on things other than the Lord. But the Lord is the One that we are to delight in and we can rejoice in His presence and experience incredible peace.
The moment we find ourselves fixated on our problems, worrying about the “what ifs”, our focus is off the Lord and we soon find we are in a dark hole. But when we take every thought captive, we remember that the Lord is mighty, He is able to take our concerns and help us in every need and situation we will ever encounter. We must choose to listen to the Holy Spirit as He whispers promises of God’s help to our hearts.
As the song goes, “When we’re weak and heavy laden/ cumbered with a load of care/ We should never be discouraged/ when we take it to the Lord in prayer.” Instead of ruminating on the negative, we can ask for help and grasp hold of the promises of God. It’s good that we know that we can’t but He can!
Challenge for today: Focus on the Lord and ask the Holy Spirit to nudge you each time your thoughts go astray.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy Weekend to you! The snow seems to have stopped for now and we are left to look out on a beautiful landscape. This morning I baked cookies on a stick and bars to put in the freezer for events coming up. Al is glad to sample them for me too! Emoji
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Yesterday our Bible Study here at Northern Lakes left me in awe of the Holy Spirit’s work and even His timing. I always go downstairs ahead of time to set up for Bible study and to be there if people come early. One gal came and was excited of what the Lord was showing her in scripture of the importance of doing the works of Jesus in helping the poor, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting those imprison etc.(Matt. 25) Also, how one day there would be a separation of those who did His works and those who refused  and would not taste of heaven but eternal punishment.

While waiting for people to show up I had just been reading a newsletter from WMPL (World Mission Prayer League) of how people in remote parts of India and other places were responding to the Lord because of the Christians meeting their needs in practical ways along with their spiritual needs. The lost may not be looking first for a church but rather looking for help and for hope and and peace and forgiveness; and isn’t it the mission that the Lord left us to share His love and meet needs, and tell of His sacrifice for all?

To get more personal in Bible study we talked about how we are the Body of Christ and what we can do, even in our apartment complex to meet the needs of others and to share Christ.  One gal told of her own loneliness and how she was walking in the halls the night before and went past the door of a gal who was recovering from a stroke. She wondered if the Lord was prompting her to knock on her door and make a visit. She responded and the woman was so thankful for her coming and also for her willingness to take her to her next doctor appointment. That is the church in action, and as we do those things led by the Spirit, one day the Lord will say, “Come you, who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for  you from the foundation of the world.”(verse 34) For I was hungry and you gave me food etc…
Let us be doing the works of Jesus as we wait for that day.
Challenge for today: Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to ways you can be His hands in the world and share His love.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

March 2, 2023

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a wonderful day. We were able to have our soup supper and service last night as the weather cleared. Further north they got about a foot of snow. Al has already left for the men’s group this morning and later we will have Bible Study here. For the devotion today I mostly used the words that Dan wrote before his death about the angelic encounter he had one night.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Recently, we went to the funeral of a Christian friend who had lived down the hall from us and came regularly to our weekly Bible Study. His life was lived for the Lord and he at times shared experiences from the past. We knew he loved the song “Trust and Obey” and the week after his funeral we sang that song in our Bible study group. Later Al and I read his life story knew why that song was meaningful to him.
In 1993 Dan was sent to St. Cloud Hospital because of pressure on his heart and shortness of breath. The Doctor had an angiogram taken on him and asked if he was a smoker, and Dan answered no. The Dr. rather surprised him and went on to say that he had him scheduled for a triple bypass the next morning. What a shock!  Dan’s wife left to go home to get clothes and he was left alone and scared; but the song Trust and Obey kept coming to his mind each time he felt nervous. The operation went well and he went to ICU to recover. Then later one night he was up walking and felt very hot. A nurse came in the room all dressed in white and had white hair. She asked Dan if she could help him and he said yes, if she could turn the air conditioner on as he was so hot. She went to the wall and fiddled there and said she turned the air conditioning on, after which she rubbed a cool washcloth all over his body. He felt cooled down and she left. But later he had sharp pains in his chest every time he took a breath. He must have collapsed as he woke up the next morning in a different room and felt like he had been run over by a truck. The nurse got him walking down the hall when he met a doctor who said he wanted to check Dan’s ribs, thinking he may have broken one rib in the crisis the night before. The Dr. told Dan he gave him quite a scare during the night and that his lungs had collapsed but he was now okay. When the nurse helped Dan back to bed, he asked her who the older nurse was that helped him last night as he wanted to thank her. She said they had no older nurse and no one there wears white. It is quite likely the Lord sent an angel to minister to him. Then the song came to his mind again, “When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He shed on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.”  Dan’s trust was in the Lord and later he told his wife, I saw an angel and all I could do was keep saying, ”Trust and obey!”  Dan is now in the very presence of the Lord! Let us all put our trust in the Lord and walk in obedience and His love.
Challenge for today: Be open to new ways the Lord may make His presence known to you.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy
