Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Grief Work

In an article for Christianity Today, Michael Cosper writes on “the last gift my father gave me… the gift of grief… As I grieved my father, I learned to grieve other things I’d failed to grieve in the past – and somehow that grief made me feel whole.”  Translating Matt. 5:4 from the Greek as, “Flourishing are the mourners because they will be comforted,” Cosper found comfort -“and something in me began to crack open.”

Without grief work, Richard Rohr maintains, “the soul remains self-enclosed, rattling around inside its own limited logic and disconnected from the world.”   Cosper recalls a friend asking him, “How’s your grief work going?”  When he could not answer the question, his friend asked, “Tell me about the last time you wept over any of this.” Grief can be unfinished hurt. “The grieving mode” observes Rohr, “is different from the fixing mode, the controlling mode or even the understanding mode of life.”

Matthew 5:48 is frequently translated, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” However, biblical scholar Jonathan Pennington argues that “perfect” relates to “shalom” which bestows the peace of God. He points out, “Shalom…is active.  Shalom is a sense of wholehearted relationship with God and an awareness of the goodness in his care and rule of the world.”

“Translating telios as ‘perfect’ makes Matt. 5:48 an ethical command, while rendering it as ‘shalom’ invites us into wholehearted relationship with God and rest in him. It’s a vision of grace.”  “In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up.  You’re kingdom subjects.  Now live like it.  Live out your God created identity.  Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.” (Matt. 5:48  MSG).

“Am I grown up?”  Do I face my inner wounds and pain as a mature man in Christ, or do I still want to cast blame and see myself as a victim?  I can get easily stuck in an inner cave of self-pity and anger. I can feel sorry for myself and blame God for not acting on my behalf.  It’s hard to admit; but I act like a “spoiled brat” at times.  I need to grow up as a man, even at my age.

I was helped years ago with this insight from Richard Rohr:  “Many men think they are angry, but most male anger is really hidden sadness.”   Tasting sadness is part of the grieving process.  We open our hearts to the sadness that has been buried for years.  We come to peace and rest in him.

Here are some insights to consider as you do your own grief work:

First, be convinced that the broken and marginalized will flourish in the kingdom of God.  You might be halfway through the tunnel.  In your pain and shame, you are tempted to turn back, denying the reality of wounded soul.  No!  Keep pressing on.  This implies vulnerability, humility, and surrender.  You can’t fix your soul sickness or sadness.  Allow Jesus to carry you to the Father.

Second, resist all efforts to put yourself in the “church” box of the strong, spiritual, self-made man.  Remember that Jesus said, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:3).  Admit that you can’t fix yourself.  Surrender to your loving Father in childlike faith.

Third, remember that it is OK to grieve as you process your pain.  I have had to do it many times.  Get it out. You have carried it too long.   Don’t hold back; ask God to be merciful, as his wayward child returns home.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. We were blessed yesterday as we went to the funeral of our friend Helen and heard of all the lives she touched by her love for the Lord and her caring ways. She lived her faith in a beautiful way and is now with the Lord.
This morning I made a couple casseroles and cleaned our apartment and now I am going to fry some sun fish that a friend caught and shared with us.Emoji

We all need to take care of our soul! Sometimes we get so busy doing things for the Lord that we neglect taking time for our soul; that results in losing our sense of purpose and meaning and we are left feeling joyless.
I am reading James Smith new book, “The Good and Beautiful You” and he differentiates the self from the soul. He explains the self as an isolated individual, interested in surviving and finding value in how it looks and what it possesses and accomplishes etc. The self can become like an idol, but our souls on the other hand, are real and eternal and know what really matters. They care about integrity, harmony, connection and what is true and good. Our souls hunger for God and also want to be loved without conditions. God breathed our soul into us and our soul is a gift that needs be nourished. It is the most real part of us and the essence of who we are most deeply.
When we neglect our souls, we pay for it as we may get depressed and feel unloved and lack purpose, as Smith himself experienced. He got so caught up in his work that he lost his joy and felt empty; he ended up at a Christian therapist where he got restored and learned to guard his soul thereafter.
Our souls do not want to be unwelcomed, ashamed, or disconnected to God; but they want to soar and have meaning. As it says in Psalm 42:1-2a (ESV), “As a deer pants for the flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”  James writes that our souls desire is to be loved, forgiven, have purpose and eternal life. Only the Lord can provide the deepest needs of our souls and only He can provide the love we crave. Let us quiet ourselves and receive His healing love to our souls.
Challenge for today: Spend some quiet time with the Lord in nature and let Him nurture your soul.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
I am writing early today as we are going to Hastings for the funeral this morning of our friend Helen. Please pray for the family as her hubby and  8 children and their spouses and many grandchildren are left behind. We know she is now with the Lord and for that we rejoice. May we all run the race bravely, as the song goes, until our time comes to also leave this world to be forever with HIm.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
God’s gifts are ultimately good, even when we may not exactly view them that way initially.  We might ask ourselves how often do we accept the trials in our lives as a welcoming gift from Him. But if we are honest, we must admit that some of the best lessons we have learned has been through times of pain and testing. James 1:2 says “When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.”
So much of our learning and growth however, depends on our response to those difficult times. I know I often thank the Lord now for a hard experience Al and I endured in one of our churches. But at the time, I would have loved if the Lord would have quickly moved us on to another church but that wasn’t His way. He taught me so much that He used later in my life in ministering to other Pastors and wives who came to Canaan’s Rest to share their struggles.
In all of our trials, it is good for us to seek to find gold in them. What is the message the Lord is trying to get through to us? When we face our hurts with His help, it may be the very place He is trying to instruct us and open our eyes so our relationship with Him can deepen.
I believe that things are going to continue to get darker in our world and a time of severe testing for us as Christians. Will we become fearful and confused and take the role of a victim or will we be an overcomer who experiences God’s power? We can make the decision even ahead of time that we will not give up but go through it redemptively and hang on to the Lord even tighter.
One day our trials will be over and whatever we suffer in this life will be rewarded with a crown of life. Like the song goes,
“It will be worth it all when we see Jesus
Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ
One glimpse of his dear face, all sorrow will erase
So, bravely run the race, till we see Christ.”
Let us not despair through the hard times but know that they are also a gift as God draws us closer to Him.
Challenge for today: Embrace and give thanks for whatever gifts God sends to you.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a day of blessings. Al is with the men of his Accountability group and I just finished making his favorite cookies. Soon I will go downstairs for donuts before going to Aldi’s and then off to Bible Study this afternoon. The Salmon supper at church last night was simply delicious  and the couple who processes it from the wild Alaskan salmon were also present with their family.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How big is our world? If our focus is only on ourselves and our needs, our world is very small. When we know the Lord, our world should become very big as we are concerned for His kingdom. That means our families, our work and all that we do, serves a much bigger purpose for we want to extend His kingdom.
Having said that, it may lead us to work with other Christians to accomplish things we can never do on our own. Recently, a young woman felt led to establish a Christian school in our town but that isn’t a job for just one person; other Christians are needed to do their part to help this dream from God to become a reality. We are to work together and not just concerned about our own agendas but the bigger picture.
God calls us to be team players. There is no room for pride or selfish ambition for we are all needed in the big purpose God has before us. That takes humility and realizing that each person is important, whether the position seems small or large. Our goal is not to impress others with our self-importance but humbly recognize we are privileged to be part of the Body. Like the apostle Paul said in Ephesians 4:1-3 (ESV), “I therefore, a prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another n love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Paul goes on to say we belong to one body, one Spirit, one faith, one hope, and we are all connected. Therefore, all of us are important in the big picture.
Let us not be self-serving and focused on ourselves, but open ourselves up to work with others in carrying out the Great Commission to win the world for Jesus.
Challenge for today: Ask the Lord how He can use you for His kingdom purposes and don’t worry if you will get recognition.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a glorious day ahead of you. I plan to study, do food prep, go to my exercise class and also to a salmon dinner at church and hear more about the mission trip to Alaska. We enjoyed our dinner with Mark’s family yesterday at Poncho Lefties and they were so full of stories of their wonderful week at the lake; fishing was rated at the top!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Our dependency is not on ourselves but to be in the Lord who is sufficient for everything that touches our lives. His grace is more than sufficient and He wants us to come to Him for help.
Lately as I have been sharing with the Lord even very minor events that are in my day and asking for his help, I am made more aware of His power and presence. Like it says in II Cor 12:9, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
It’s good that we don’t have it all together or our dependency would rest in ourselves; then when things don’t turn out well, we would get discouraged and down on ourselves. But if we bring everything to the Lord we can rejoice when we see Him work and then join together with Him in carrying out His will. Nothing is too small for Him or too great for Him to handle, so why waste our energy doing it on our own when we can work side by side with Him?
Of course, we will have to deal with our flesh for it battles against the spirit and wants to be in control. Even when we know the right thing to do, our flesh will try to talk us out of it and go our own way. If we listen to our own desires, we will miss many blessings that God has for us. But if we allow the Spirit to lead us, we will have peace even if we don’t understand all that He is doing in our lives. We no longer have to figure everything out but to simply be obedient to how He is leading us.
When we open our hearts to the Lord and place our dependency on Him in everything that touches our lives, His power will be seen in our weaknesses.
Challenge for today: Relinquish your dependency on self and place all your dependency on the Lord and get ready for an amazing ride!
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake up this morning in the awareness that God has placed unique gifts in you. Your question today is to name one of them that you are grateful for.
Today Mark’s family is leaving the lake and coming by to take us out to Poncho Lefties for lunch and dessert at Culvers as Birthday celebrations…Two of our favorite places.  What a wonderful time they have had at the lake and now will be heading back to North Carolina.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
When I was quite young, one of the verses of Scripture I memorized was from Matt. 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Jesus included these words in his Sermon on the Mount so must be important when He tells us not to hide our light but put it on a lamp stand for all to see.
That doesn’t mean we go around announcing to others the good things we may do but it also doesn’t mean that we deny the giftedness that God has given us. When we make light of those gifts from above, we are not giving praise to our Giver. Often others may be able to see qualities that shine out of us, but may be invisible to ourselves. But we are to use the gifts God has given us and to shine, shine, shine.
Author Michael Casey quotes Marianne Williamson who first published these words: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
How important it is that we can all be our unique selves and let others see who we really are. To believe that we are not good enough is is to deny God’s gift in us and our light goes dim.
But let us remember we are His child bursting with unique gifts He has put within us to shine for His glory and bring others into freedom to be themselves.
Challenge for today: Thank God for the gifts He has put within you and recognize them in others as well.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful weekend! We enjoyed yesterday at our son-in-law’s church and celebration of his ordination, and later picnic, swimming, sauna and tubing with family. I made cookies this morning and went to my exercise class.
I just got word that my friend from childhood, Helen, died early this morning. Please pray for her husband Jim,who is a pastor, and his family. She was loved by so many!
Devotions from Judy’s  heart
“Whisper a prayer in the morning, whisper a prayer at noon, whisper a prayer in the evening, to keep your heart in tune.” That is a chorus I sang as a young girl and was encouraged to tell God my needs. The second verse goes, “God answers prayer in the morning, God answers prayer at noon, God answers prayer in the evening, to keep your heart in tune.” Prayer is so important in the life of Christians and we are reminded to pray without ceasing, Prayer is powerful as it says in James 5:16(NRSV), “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” We might ask then, why aren’t my prayers always answered?
Jesus hears us when we pray but the answers come in many ways. Of course, we love when our prayers are answered immediately and we see God’s hand in it. On Saturday I had such an experience as I was concerned for my friend in Assisted Living. Each August she goes to the Art Fair that is outside and right next door to where she lives. Since she is legally blind and wheelchair bound, it is hard for her to shop. The past couple years Al and I just happened to be going through her town when the sale was on and I helped her shop for the many presents she desires to give to those working where she lives. Well, this year she just had gifts for her son’s family left to find but I couldn’t get there for the sale; I was concerned for her going up and down an incline to actually get to the sale and then trying to find gifts when she sees so little. So, I prayed and prayed that God would send help to her in some way, and when I went to see her yesterday, I was so astonished at how God answered. Just as she was about ready to go down the incline for the sale, one of the vendors asked if she needed help. He was a total stranger and had his own booth to watch but saw she was in need. He not only helped her down the slope but took her all over for the sale and found the perfect gift for her son’s family. Instead of individual gifts, the big gift that took all her money, was for the whole family. Afterwards the kind man helped her up the incline and took her all the way back to Assisted Living. I could hardly believe the specific answer to prayer and she and I spent time in prayer yesterday and thanked the Lord.
As we know God doesn’t always answer yes for sometimes what we ask for would not be good for us. There are times we are to wait, and we need patience for the time is not right yet. But one thing we do know He hears our prayers and will answer according to His perfect will.
Challenge for today: Give the Lord a need you have and thank Him that He hears and the answer is on its way.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

Young Men are Welcome Here

Jorden Peterson is making waves again in the Evangelical community.  He recently published a message on You Tube entitled “Message to the Christian Churches.”  Peterson has gotten a lot of attention among evangelicals, especially in his appeal to young men.  He want us to be aware of the needs of men, warning us that they are facing an unparalleled demoralization due to the West’s weaponizing guilt regarding males.

He is forceful in his challenge. “Put up a billboard saying “young men are welcome here”.…..Ask more, not less of those you are inviting.  Ask more of them than anyone ever has.  Remind them who they are in the deepest sense and help them become that.”  He is blunt when he says, “Attend to some souls.  That’s what you’re supposed to do.  That’s your holy duty.  Do it now, before it’s too late.  The hour is night.”

I for one have an appreciation for Peterson.  He has received his fair share of criticism because he has not as of yet become a believer.  Referring to Genesis, He tell the church how to speak to young men. “The Christian church is there to remind people, young men included, perhaps even first and foremost, that they have a woman to find, a garden to walk in, a family the nurture, an ark of build, and land to conquer, and a ladder to heaven to build.”  I only question the idea of a ladder to heaven.  Our message needs to be grace filled.

When I watch his video and read some of the articles in response, I kept thinking of Isaiah prophecy regarding Jesus. “But he won’t yell, won’t raise his voice; there’ll be no commotion in the streets.  He won’t walk over anyone’s feelings, won’t push you into a corner.  Before you know it, his justice will triumph; the mere sound of his name will signal hope, even among far-off unbelievers” (Matt. 12:19-21 -MSG).

In my view, Peterson is like a compassionate father figure, desperately trying to wake up the church, to welcome young men, who have lost their way in the midst of the cultural cross currents that have vilify the masculine.  Peterson has stood up to an over -bearing woke culture, and is now saying, “come home” to young men.  The church as a caring, open-minded and affirming community of folks who want to live out the reality of Genesis, can make a difference in the lives of lost young men.

But it will not be easy.  it will be messy, when young men, check out “The Good News” of the kingdom and its implications for our day.  What will it take?  Came we meet some of the challenges? Are we willing as followers of Jesus, to plant the Christian flag in the midst of almost demonic resistance, and say,  “At the beginning the Creator ‘make them male and female'” (Matt. 19:4).  God’s plan from the beginning is the reality we embrace.

All other opinions are asking men to live in unreality. They are being asked to deny their identity as men, and settle for a patchwork of woke ideology, which imprisons men in a false reality.  It will not stand the tests that are about to come upon our whole nation.

Men need to here it straight, with no apologies.  They will need strong, affirming communities to nurture their souls.  As Peterson said, “Attend to some souls….That’s your holy duty.  Do it now, before it’s too late.”  I for one, take Peterson’s message to heart.  We can learn a lot from the common grace, as expressed by the likes of Jordan Peterson.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying the weekend! This morning I cleaned our apartment, met in the library with a friend, and did food prep for our picnic at the lake tomorrow after church. We look forward to having family time together.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
The Lord wants to be an intricate part of our lives and not just on the periphery. When we belong to Him, He wants all of us and to walk in harmony with His will for us. The closer we walk with Him and obey, the more we will be attuned to His voice and have an expectancy for what we will encounter in our day.  Life becomes exciting and full and we will have moments when we just know it is the Lord and He uses whoever He chooses to meet needs in our lives and to bless us.
Last Sunday on our way to church, I reminded Al that he needed to get someone to trade Sundays for serving donuts and coffee after our church service. He was assigned to serve this Sunday but we planned to go the church where our son-in-law is pastor; plus they would be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Leif’s ordination and we didn’t want to miss. But just as we got in the door of our church, a member came towards Al and motioned for him to go aside as he had a favor he wanted to ask him. Of course, you know what it was! He wanted to trade Sundays with Al as he couldn’t fulfill his assignment either. So, they both went to the kitchen and fixed the calendar so each of them could do what they needed to do.
The next day, I was talking with a friend in our apt complex and God chose her to meet a need I had for another friend who I often visit in Assisted living. My friend here no longer had any use of what she had ordered on Amazon and it was the answer to the need of my other friend. I’m sure as you go over your day, you might find several instances where you know the Lord’s hand was evident and realize He is concerned even about the smallest things in your life.
Like professor James Smith said, “The Christian faith is not primarily about belief and practices; it is primarily about what kind of people Christians become.” Is it our desire to draw closer to the Lord that He increases in our lives and we decrease?  Smith goes on to say there is a deep longing in our souls to be wanted, loved, and connected to God for our true self is hidden in the Lord. As it says in Col. 3:3(God’s Word), “You have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”  The Holy Spirit wants to make Jesus so real to us that we feel loved and see His hand throughout our day and hear even His whispers, letting us know how loved we are.
Challenge for today: Ask the Holy Spirit to shape and form you more like Jesus and that He is most important in your life.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

August 12, 2022

Dear Ones,
Happy Weekend to you! It rained all morning and everything looks so fresh. I’m sure those at the lake are disappointed and hoping it will clear up soon. This morning I did food prep and made stroganoff and egg dishes etc.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Do we value the presence of the Lord above everything else? That was a question that Juliet Canha asked in her book and maybe we need to ask ourselves. Do we really practice the presence of the Lord throughout our day?
I have always been impressed by the Brother Lawrence, a monk, who worked in the kitchen but talked to the Lord all through his day. He prayed short prayers and focused on the Lord even as he washed pots and pans etc. I want to live that way, more and more, and just share my day communing with the Lord. Too often I am thinking of what comes next and not being present in the moment to enjoy whatever He brings into my day.
Recently our friend David, who we walk on the trail with each day, wrote a poem of how he has discovered peace of mind as he seeks to live in the present with the Lord. His wife has Alzheimer’s and he writes that he doesn’t want to be disturbed by his circumstances but to observe the unfolding of life as God intended. He goes on to say that we need to make space for peace to begin and silence to surface which requires us to be present at the moment.
We can all have deep inner peace knowing the Lord is with us in everything that touches our lives. David said that the past couple years of his journey he has had to face significant headwinds but the Lord has held him closer and given him peace as He turns his headwinds into tailwinds! I love that picture of how those difficult things that we face, can become the very things that spur us on and make us stronger. Think of how many more miles our cars can go on a gallon of gas when we have a tailwind!
Like King David said in Psalm 16:11 that it is in His presence that we experience fullness of joy. Let us walk closely with the Lord daily and experience His peace as we become more aware of His presence.
Challenge for today: Talk to the Lord as you go through your day and thank Him that He is right there with you.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy
