Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying the weekend. I just cleaned the apartment and did food prep and packing for the lake. Tomorrow is Taylor’s wedding, and we look forward to that; thankfully the weather looks good as it is on the beach.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Haven’t we all said at one time or other, “How did that couple ever get together?! They are total opposites!” Quite often we are attracted to someone who is so different from us. In the beginning we admire certain qualities about them but then when it comes to living with them, it just may take lots of adjusting. I smiled as I read Joyce Meyer’s comments about how her and her husband are so different from one another. She is extroverted and a talker and an upfront person who likes action and things to happen preferably right now. He is introverted, quiet and usually behind the scenes, patient and able to wait for things to happen. But isn’t that just a perfect balance for both?  It’s important to let God choose our life partner and closest friends for He knows those who He will use to shape and polish us. We all have rough edges and are in the transformation process to conform us to the image of Christ. That is a big project and takes a lifetime.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Al is an extravert and I am an introvert, and the hardest adjustment for me has been those extroverted times upfront when we spoke or taught together. I would much rather preferred being unseen and part of the audience. Here at Northern Lakes where we live, he leads the Bible study and I just fill in as I am led, and it is far more comfortable.  Those who are totally different from us may irritate us and we wonder why they don’t change. But instead, we need to accept them, and appreciate them and ask God, what is He trying to teach us through them. If we don’t learn through one of them, He is likely to bring another one like them into our lives. His goal is that we reflect His glory and are being changed into His image with ever-increasing glory. (II Cor. 3:18)                                                                                                              Let us be open to those the Lord has chosen for us to learn from.
Challenge for today: Welcome those who are different than you and be teachable and open to change as the Holy Spirit directs.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a blessed day! Al is home from the Men’s Group and I have been busy in the kitchen making egg dishes and chicken teriyaki, and doing food prep. We have Bible Study this afternoon and a walk on the trail. Kurt’s family is on their way to the lake and lots of relatives will be gathering this weekend for the wedding!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Our pastor has been preaching a series on the fruit of the Spirit and I have given extra thought for the fruit of kindness. It seems we live in a dark world today with violence, hunger, and cruelty and more than ever kindness is needed and can make a difference. To someone lonely and feeling empty, an act of kindness can beam a ray of light into their darkness and lets them know they are seen and counted.            Our actions of kindness should not be done because we feel we have to but more out of a caring heart that focuses on the other, rather than oneself. The Holy Spirit wants to give us such a heart and as Paul said in Eph. 4:32, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” We are to be thoughtful, desiring to see the real needs of another and seeking to sow kindness into their lives. How does that look?                                                                                                                                                                                                     We can show kindness in friendship, by welcoming someone into our lives in a climate of understanding and love. It may be a simple act that opens the door and brings hope to them. It takes sensitive ears and hearts open to the Holy Spirit to know what act of kindness is needed. Sometimes it is just a word that gives them hope, a scripture that they can hang on to. It could be simply paying for an item that is needed but they can’t afford. Or could be a word of gratitude to a person who is serving us in some way. I am reminded of my niece’s daughter Taylor, who was led by the Spirit to walk over to a stranger and give him the word that God wanted him to know he was forgiven. Later she found out that he had been driving a car and was in an accident in which his fiend was killed. I’m sure Tylor’s obedience to share this word of kindness and forgiveness meant everything to that young man. Another wonderful way is to actually give someone a blessing. We find this often in scripture and we can also place our hand on a person and impart a blessing in His name. “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.”                                                                                            May our kind words and actions be like a poultice that helps remove hurts and brings healing to wounds.
Challenge for today: Share a word of thanks to someone who has expressed God’s kindness to you.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you have a peace-filled day. I just finished baking two kinds of cookies and soon off to Aldi’s and my exercise class. This afternoon is Crafts and tonight is Bible Study. I enjoyed yesterday so much at my former Bible study group in Hackensack! Great gals who love the Lord!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
If I wake in the night, I often ask the Lord for a word for the day. What do I need to live the day for Him as His plan unfolds? What is important to hold on to?  For today it was simply to seek him first… that means above all things, including what others may try to sway me to do. In my dream before waking, people were coming into our home and taking over in some areas without permission. I needed to speak up and say No! I woke up remembering the dream and the word for the day.                                                                                                                                  It is so important that God is first in our lives and that we follow His plan. He has a unique plan for each of us every day and it is not like others, so we have to be watchful and listening. There is a peace when we flow with how He is leading us and at the end of the day, we just marvel at how He fit everything together. As I write this our son texted us for prayer as he has to fly to Denver and then has a meeting in Wyoming and giving a presentation at 2, fly home tonight, pack and leave with his wife and son for the cabin tomorrow morning. His plan depends on the airlines and many things but ultimately it is in the Lord’s hands.                                                                                                  Of course, the enemy is out to destroy the Lord’s plans for us, so we must be watchful, and recognize the Lord’s voice and not give heed to the enemy. Often the Lord surprises us as He is working behind the scenes. We may suddenly notice a door He opens to us and we need to be alert and ready to walk through it in faith. Then at the end of the day, we may feel like David when he said in Psalm 53, “As I lie on my bed, I remember you. Through the long hours of the night, I think about you. You have been my help. In the shadow of your wings, I sing joyfully. My soul clings to you. Your right hand supports me.” He recalls God’s help to him and how He was so present. Then David closes by saying that the king will find joy in God.                                                                                                                                                                             May our joy be found in seeking the Lord first, and then following His plan for our day.
Challenge for today: Upon waking, give your day to the Lord and ask for a word to carry with you.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you awaken to a day full of joy and sunshine. I plan to go with a friend to Hackensack to the Bible study I went to for all the years that we lived at the lake. I love this praying group of gals who love the Lord and know the power of prayer. There is a luncheon afterwards and then I have to be home for my dental appointment! Emoji

Are we in a growth season in our spiritual lives right now or do we find ourselves in a dry dormant season? I think we all experience both seasons at different times in our lives and would prefer being in the growth and blossoming one; but if we are honest with ourselves, it seems like we experience both seasons and perhaps grow deeper even when we feel rather dormant.
A while ago I sent out a picture of the beautiful planter I received with red and white tulips, tall yellow daffodils, purple flowers, lavender flowers etc. I enjoyed them for a long time and was surprised as more flowers seem to keep opening up every few days. Now they have since wilted but I gave the planter to our daughter to put the bulbs in her basement to be planted next spring. They will go through a dormant stage and will rest until planted again. Even now I can envision them blossoming and taller and even more beautiful. I live in hope!
Maybe today, we sense we are in a dry dormant time, and that not much is happening in our lives outwardly. We may feel rather cold spiritually and not seeing much fruit. In fact, we may be depressed and going through a dark time of winter, wishing it was spring and that we could be hopeful and joyful and upbeat. But that doesn’t mean that nothing is happening. Perhaps we are realizing more than ever, how dependent we are on the Lord. We can’t force things but wait for Him to lead and to direct our lives. It could be a hidden work He is doing in our lives at this time, as He knows what is ahead for us. We need to submit to Him and be deeply rooted into Him.
Paul said in Col 2:6-7, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” The bottom line is that we need to be connected to the Lord, rooted in Him and draw our strength from Him. He nourishes us and pours His Spirit into us, and surprise…..beautiful blossoms will be seen at His appointed time. For now, we simply trust Him and rest in Him and wait for Spring to come.
Challenge for today: Thank the Lord for the season you are in now, and let your roots go down deep.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

God Gave Them Over

In Ezekiel 20, the leaders of Israel came to Ezekiel during their exile to inquire of the Lord. God tells them through the prophet, “How dare you come to ask me for a message?  As surely as I live… I will tell you nothing” (20:3 NLT).  Ezekiel brought instead a message of judgment and condemnation: “Make them realize how loathsome the actions of their ancestors really were” (v. 4). Through Ezekiel, God reminded the leaders of their ancestors’ behavior in Egypt, during their wilderness journey, and in the Promised Land:  “Their hearts were given to their idols” (v. 17). When they came into the Promised Land, they “continued to blaspheme and betray me “(v. 27). Sinful habits and attitudes were being passed  on through the generations.

Ezekiel warned the younger generation not to emulate their parents, “Then I warned their children and told them not to follow in their parents’ footsteps, defiling themselves with their idols” (Ezk. 20:18).  But they did not listen. “They refuse to keep my laws and follow my instructions, even though obeying them would have given them life” (Ezk. 20:21). They somehow thought they knew better than God.

Each generation had rebelled against the Lord, refusing to obey the commandments given to them. God threatened to pour out his anger on them, but he relented. He withheld judgment “to protect the honor of my name among the nations who had seen my power in bringing them out of Egypt” (Ezk. 20:21). God withheld  his wrath out of concern for his reputation in faithfully leading his Israel and because he had pity on them:  “I pitied them and held back from destroying them in the wilderness” (Ezk. 20:7). Does God hold back his Judgment out of concern for his reputation and his loving kindness and  pity in our day.  I wonder!

God then told the people what he is doing in their day: “I gave them over to worthless customs and laws that would not lead to life.  I let them pollute themselves with the very gifts I had given them, and I allowed them to give their firstborn children as offerings to their gods – so I might devastate them to show them that I alone am the Lord” (Ezk. 20:25-26).  “Israel had turned God’s law upside down and rejected it, so that it became… a source of death, not life.  They had gone in for child sacrifice as if God had required it, perhaps even portrayed it as part of God’s law.  So Ezekiel portrays God as letting them do so – ending up in their own defilement and destruction” (Bible Speaks Today).  God gave them up to their persistent inversion of his law, resulting in their self-destruction.

Paul describes something  similar in the New Testament, which should stand as a warning for our present generation.  In Romans 1, he speaks of God giving people over to “the sinful desires of their hearts” (v. 21), “to shameful lusts” (v. 26) and “to a depraved mind” (v. 28).  He concludes by saying, “They are fully aware of God’s death penalty for those who do these things, yet they go right ahead and do them anyway” (v. 32).  In II Thessalonians 2:10-11, Paul tells us, “He (Satan) will use every kind of wicked deception because they refuse to believe the truth that would save them. So God will send great deception upon them, and they will believe all these lies.”

My questions are these: Have we reached this point in our day?  Has God given us over and allowed a great deception? How long will God allow evil to spread as a cancer throughout our culture?  Ezekiel gives us a warning.  Men, we must defend against the lies of the enemy.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a wonderful weekend. We got a nice surprise yesterday as longtime friends came to church and over for lunch and time for fellowship and prayer. I had to swallow my pride as the house was not so neat and I served what we had on hand but as you will read in the devotion today, pride has to go!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Pride is not pretty but rather stinky! Pride is something we have to deal with all our life and we are reminded often to be humble. Scripture is full of words about pride and examples of those the Lord humbled when they got full of self. As I read today, we can’t be full of God if we are full of ourselves. Something has to go and that is our pride.                                                                                                                                    When Jesus was speaking with His disciples, he told them not to be like the Pharisees in how they lived out their behavior. In Matt. 23:5-7, He said, “Be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don’t live it. They don’t take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It’s all spit-and-polish veneer.”                                                                                                                                                                                                        But what about us? Our lives are good indicators if we are prideful for is shows up in being judgmental (We are better everyone else), or if we aren’t correctable (we always are right), or if we have an opinion on everything (after all we know everything!) Even our thoughts make us aware that we are prideful and relying on ourselves rather than God. We need an attitude of humility for apart from the Lord we can do nothing!  Further on in verses 11-12, Jesus said, ”Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant. If you puff yourself up, you’ll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you’re content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.”
We are not to be puffed up like the Pharisees but humble, relying on God, not ourselves. Our greatness comes from serving God and others and we are promised His grace if we are humble. Let us dare to ask the Lord to help us see our pride and to humble ourselves before Him and others.
Challenge for today: Do a humble act of service for someone today!

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying this weekend. I just cleaned the apartment and made veggie stir fry and porkchops. We hear that storms may be coming this afternoon. We pray next Saturday may be beautiful as my niece’s daughter Taylor is getting married by the lake! Emoji
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Do we really enjoy the life that God has given us? I was reading a devotional by Joyce Meyer and she shared how we are not to live life blandly by just working and accomplishing, but not really embracing our life. We were meant to enjoy our lives. It particularly struck me as I had just told Al the day before how much I enjoyed the life God gave me and was glad I was born in this era, married to him who I love, living in this apartment complex, able to live a contemplative life, cooking for a man who is willing to try anything I make, children and grandchildren who I love etc. etc. I am glad each day I awaken that I can enjoy life! Joyce quoted Eccl 2:24, “There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink and make himself enjoy good in his labor. Even this, I have seen, is from the hand of God.”
I think it is God’s will that we all enjoy the life God has given us. It is not based on great circumstances, comforts, and what we have, but more of our heart attitude. Our joy is in the Lord, and both the little and big things are part of His big picture for our lives. I love when I see His hand, meeting a simple desire even before I have spoken about it or prayed about it. Just this week I was sitting on the sofa and as I looked at the wall behind the two big chairs, I thought we really should get a new picture; the one on display we’ve had for years. Not a day later, I went down to the room by the elevator where free things are put, and there was a large-framed picture with flowers etc. and had all the colors present in our living room. It blended in with the chairs, rug and sofa. It couldn’t be more perfect, and I felt the Lord smiling for only he knew!
Of course, not everything in our life is enjoyable as we have struggles, sickness, problems of all kinds but that should not stop us from enjoying the Lord. He is with us every moment and He is present to help us through each difficult thing in our day. Lately, I have prayed lots about my computer, my jaw, and questioned Him why we had to turn around from our trip to N.C. to see family. I don’t know the answers, but I know I can trust Him and enjoy life in the meantime. Let us not get stuck by our circumstances and let it dictate our heart attitude, but choose to enjoy every day with Him!
Challenge for today: Make a decision to enjoy your life and thank the Lord He has you right where you to be.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy Weekend to you! It’s a beautiful sunny day and we look forward to going on the trail this afternoon. I just made banana bread for the men’s group, and Al was so kind and sampled it for me!!Emoji He’s asking about the flavor of ice cream at Culver’s so I suspect we will be going there today!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
It’s wonderful when God provides us with others who are farther along on the spiritual journey to help guide us. I’m sure we all have questions at times and wonder if we are on the right path and hearing the Lord correctly or if it is our own flesh nature that is tripping us up. The Lord may prompt someone to come along side of us and help us hear Him and bring encouragement.
One of my friends is a spiritual director and helps others along in their spiritual lives to guide them. She has several each month that either come over to her house or that call in for a time of listening to the Lord together. She listens much and gives guidance and prays over them and they go away encouraged and strengthened. As it says in John 14:26 that the Holy spirit will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that He says.
We can learn so much from those that have been on the journey longer than we have and know the right paths, as well as the mistaken roads to avoid. It’s too bad that in our culture today that youth is regarded more important than elders who have wisdom. We must be open to the new but we have much to learn from those that are more experienced than we are on the spiritual walk.
If we desire spiritual direction, it should be with a respected person whom we trust and is open to the Holy Spirit. He or she is not so much full of words but willing to listen well and discern. My friend gave me spiritual direction when they came for retreat when we still lived on the lake. She lite a candle, listened to me, prayed. and what she told me was confirmed on that same day. At this time, Al is my spiritual director and I am his, which is rather unusual, but works well for us since we spend much of our days together and usually take a walk each afternoon. We share so much and often one of says that we need spiritual direction, and that means we quiet down and listen to the other. It is different than our opinion on things, but it is rather listening to what we sense God is saying. We don’t let our partner off the hook if repentance is needed but speak what is needed also.
Challenge for today: Be open and listening to the Holy Spirit in your life and also for others if they are seeking.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunny day. I have been busy in the kitchen this morning and Al was at Men’s group. This afternoon we have Bible Study here and later today I hope to go spend my Kohl’s dollars! Emoji
 Devotions from Judy’s heart
When we know the Lord, we are not always to be YES people but rather those who seek to do the will of God in each circumstance. Sometimes we need to say No because God has not purposed for us to do something, even though it has merit. If the enemy can’t get us one way, he will try to get us so busy that we weaken in our resolve to serve the Lord.
Our faithfulness is to be to the Lord and not men’s will, and the Lord wants to guide us and lead us each day of our lives and has promised to do so. It says in Psalm 32:8 (ESV), “I will instruct you and teach you in the way the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” It is important to stay close to the Lord and listen to His voice so we can hear His directions for our lives and not fall prey to the wishes of others, even in the church. Maybe I should say especially in the church. We can get overly involved in saying yes to so many good things that we neglect our time with the Lord and our family.
I was reading today how we often say yes, because we want to avoid conflict and we want to be seen as a caring-giver. We might think that people will only love us and want to be around us if we keep giving to them. We question if they will stick around us if we say no and don’t do all that they want. We come across as not having any needs ourselves, but what happens is that we then get drained, and burn out. We can’t and shouldn’t say yes to everything. Parents who only say yes to all of their kids wants are training them to be selfish and entitled. Instead, when they are told no, they find that they can’t demand everything they want but must give and take. That is part of life. If we are all giving and not receiving the balance scale will tip over and we will be left feeling drained.
The better way is to ask the Lord to direct us by His Holy Spirit to instruct and teach us the way we should go. Sometimes it is giving to those around us, and sometimes it is in saying, “No, I don’t believe that is how the Lord is directing me right now.” Let us be Yes people only in relation to the Lord…His will above our will!
Challenge for today: The next time you are asked to do something, pause and pray before giving an answer.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy
