Canaan’s Rest represents a quiet place “set apart” for the purpose of hearing God's voice, growing in intimacy with the Lord, and being renewed in soul and spirit.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a good day and one of peace. I did some packing this morning and went to my exercise class. This afternoon we have someone coming to our craft class with ideas and all the makings for us to create several cards. We leave very early tomorrow morning for Kurt’s in Olathe, Kansas, where we will spend the weekend and see Lily play soccer.Emoji
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Every morning I start my day by praying that the Lord would speak to me; that I would hear his voice and that He would give to me what He wants me to write. Yesterday I read from a devotional about worry, and I thought of how I have written on that subject before. But then I went to my computer and there was a second devotional on worry and then followed a third one. So, I guess worry is something that needs to be addressed as we all have to guard against it.
The Lord wants to free us of becoming anxious and worried, so we can experience His wonderful peace. He told his disciples in Luke 12:22-23 (ESV), “Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.” Mark Robert from Fuller Seminary wrote that in Jesus’ day they probably had more to be concerned about than we do today. They were poor and lived under Roman rule and taxed heavily. They had no safety net to help them. Life expectancy was estimated to be 35 years old. But we can come up with our own list of things we might worry about, like our children, our world, illnesses, finances etc. Right now, we have concern for good friends who have covid, and so we pray and give them to the Lord and leave it in His capable hands.
Worry happens when we leave the Lord out of the picture and think we are on our own. It also puts us in a future mode of concern over things that may never happen; and even if they did, we will be given grace at the time and not before it happens. When we worry, it doesn’t change the outcome and our anxiety sets our imagination into motion of all the terrible things that could result.
We should pay attention to what things cause us anxiousness because it is like a red light that shows up on our dash board to let us know something is not right. It is a warning perhaps of something we have not given to the Lord and need to surrender to Him. When that alarm goes off, we need to go to prayer and turn our worries over to Him in trust.
Challenge for today: The next time you become worried, stop and pray!
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake up to a day of peace and joy!
Devotions from Judy’s heart
For Mother’s Day I got a card from my surrogate son whom I have known for many years. His parents are with the Lord, and I am blessed he has chosen me to be his surrogate mom. In his card were the words of Frederick Meyer that spoke to me:
“Joy is peace dancing. Peace is joy resting.”
Can’t you just visualize freely dancing with a heart of peace or sitting restfully in quiet with the Lord as joy overflows in your heart? I love that picture and sometimes I feel like that as I sit by the lake with the sun shining down on me and no one else around except the Lord.
We may wish every day was like that but we get bogged down with schedules and cares of life and our peace gets squeezed out by stress. However, our peace is not dependent on perfect circumstances but in the person of Jesus who is our peace. And because He is our peace, we have deep joy that does not fade when things are less than ideal
Maybe we worry about what the uncertain future holds but instead we need to put our gaze on the One who holds the future Just as it says is Prov. 3:5 (AMP), “Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.” We can live in peace and joy and not fear if we are trusting in the Lord. As a few lines of John Greenleaf Whittier’s song goes:

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.

May we experience the beauty of His peace and overflow with His joy a we lean into Him.
Challenge for today:Trust and be confident in Him and let His peace and joy take over your day!
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Devotions from Judy’s heart
God’s love for us is so great that there are no words to describe it adequately. We can only use pictures and words to try to help us understand the depth of it, but those words will fall short. Today I was reading from Isaiah 54:10 (Amplified), and it says, “For though the mountains should depart and the hills be shaken or removed, yet My love and kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall my covenant of peace and completeness be removed, says the Lord, Who has compassion on you.” The Message says it this way, “For even if the mountains walk away and the hills fall to pieces, My love won’t walk away from you, my covenant commitment of peace won’t fall apart. The God who has compassion on you says so.”
I love the mountains in Colorado and to sit in a meadow and just spend time beholding the grandeur of them. We can’t imagine that anything can be more immovable and enduring than a mountain; but even if that should happen that it moved, God’s love and kindness will always, always endure. That also means that even when we fail, He will not take His love away.
Our love for one another is so often fickle and conditional on how others respond; It’s like you treat me well and I will treat you well! You speak evil of me and I will speak evil of you and also make sure your reputation is damaged.
But God’s love if not like that and remains the same for it is not conditional. No matter how badly we mess up, His love is unfailing and inexhaustible. He is the only one who can love us like that and when we come to know His love in a deep way, we can rest in peace and feel secure. Like the song goes:

“The love of God is greater far than any tongue or pen can ever tell; it goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell…..Oh, love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forever more endure—the saints’ and angels’ song.”

Let us receive deeply His love and also share it with others.

Challenge for today: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you, any ways you are blocking God’s love from penetrating your heart.
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

America’s Moral Compass

Two recent surveys show a nation that is trending downward when it comes to optimism. The first is the American Psychological Association’s (APA) annual Stress in America survey.  Lynn Bufka, a clinical psychologist with the APA, called the level of shared stress among Americans “startling.”  ”A full 87% say that the rise of prices on everyday items due to inflation is a significant source of stress.”  Beyond this, 84% of respondents felt the Russian invasion of the Ukraine is “terrifying to watch.”

Further, a Marist College Poll survey showed a majority of Americans are “concerned that America’s moral compass is pointed in the wrong direction.”  “Some 72% of Americans say the nation’s moral compass is pointed in the wrong direction, while only 22% say it’s pointed the right way.” Among Christians, 74% agree that the nation is moving in the wrong direction morally, while 69% of those who don’t practice a religion agree.

The APA believes that “living through historic threats like these often has a lasting, traumatic impact on generations.” They feel it is important to “provide help to everyone who needs it” and suggest “evidence-based treatment.”  However, the Marist Poll also found that “some 79% of Americans reported turning to their family for moral guidance, including 83% of Christians.  The report notes that “Americans actually find themselves looking to family more often than religious teachings when looking for sources of moral guidance.”

My interpretation of these conclusions suggests help comes from two primary sources: “healthcare professionals” and family.  Family points in the direction of trusted relationships and community. My contention is that in the days to come, those committed to Jesus and his kingdom will need strong communities of faith to remain strong in their convictions and witness.

I cannot stress how important it is for any man who is still living a “lone ranger” spirituality to realize how much he needs a believing community.  It is vital for your family as well.  You will need to band together with other believing families to withstand the opposition you will be facing.  It is going to get darker.  We will need to be surrounded by “children of light.” “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light…” (see Eph. 5:8-10).

I personally sense the stress level rising in our nation.  Anxiety increases as people realize they are being lied to by the dominant cultural narrative.   People are confused by “misinformation.”  “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness” (Is. 5:20).   The Lord is saying, “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Eph. 5:14).

Sleepwalkers avoid the truth, while being swayed by deception.  Jesus said, “whoever lives by the truth comes into the light” (John 3:21).  Those asleep are being influenced by false prophets, who say all the right things to enhance a false narrative of unreality.  Jesus warned us of this danger: “Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity.  Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other.  Don’t be impressed with charisma: look for character” (Matt. 7:15-16 – Message).

“Walk by the light you have,” Jesus reminds us, “so darkness doesn’t destroy you.  If you walk in darkness, you don’t know where you’re going.  As you have the light, believe in the light.  Then the light will be within you and shining through your lives.  You’ll be children of light” (John 12:35-36 – Message).  My advice, surround yourself with “children of light.”

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a good weekend and enjoying this nice weather. I cleaned the apt and packed some things up to go to Ann’s tomorrow for Mother’s Day.We will also go to church in Hackensack and hear Leif preach. Kurt and buddies moved the sauna down the hiil by the cabin yesterday as Matt used his bulldozer and lots of wisdom. Will be wonderful to have the sauna down by the lake instead of across the road.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
It’s Mother’s Day tomorrow and a day to honor those who have birthed us or chose us through adoption, and sacrificed so much for us. We were all put into a family to help us grow and to become what God has planned for us.
For many years I wondered if I had the right mother, as we seemed to be so different from one another; but later I recognized how very blessed I was to have the mother God chose for me and who knew and loved Him and taught me His ways.
I was reading what Andrew Towe, pastor and author, had to say about a very special mother in the Bible named Jochebed. Maybe that name does not ring a bell to you at all, but she was the mother of Moses. She gave birth to him during a very oppressive time, for King Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew babies to be thrown into the Nile River and drown. But God had a different plan and used Jochebed to save not only her son but a nation. She was a woman of faith who hid her son after he was born until she could no longer hide the growing child. So, she made a basket of bullrushes and put baby Moses in it and floated him in the reeds by the river bank. Like Pastor Towe wrote, “Moses sailed on the water that was intended to kill him.”
Pharaoh’s daughter discovered him when she came with her maidens to bathe. She heard his cries and had compassion on him and overturned Satan’s plan to kill him. He was raised by her in the palace and God’s purpose to save God’s people was accomplished for his life.
As the Lord said to Jeremiah 32:27 (God’s Word), “I am the Lord God of all humanity. Nothing is too hard for me.”
Moses’ mother acted in faith and was rewarded. She committed her son into God’s hands just like we must do with our children. We have no idea all that they will encounter in life and our part is to teach them of the Lord and pray much for them all our days. I wonder how many plans of Satan have been thwarted by a praying mother! Even when the outlook is not favorable at the time, let us never, never, give up but stand strong with an expectant heart for what God can do.
Challenge for today: By faith commit your children into God’s hand, pray daily, and never ever give up.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy Weekend to you! Looks to be a beautiiful day. I studied and did some food prep this morning and took a quick trip to Costco. This afternoon I am going to bake chix soup and maybe a tript to Kohl’s. Enjoyed the Gala last night so much and we had a table for couples all from Northern Living.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
How wonderful it is to behold a changed life and to know that it is a miracle that only God could do! You can think of your own scenario, of what would entail a miracle but what I saw last night was multiple miracles that all glory goes to the Lord.
We went to a Gala for Teen Challenge last night and heard a wonderful program by the men who have been held captive to addictions of various drugs and many who have been in prison and served time, lost their families etc. Teen Challenge may have been their last resort, if the judge let them choose between life behind bars and rehab at Teen Challenge. We heard their stories and the horror of all they suffered as they went through detox etc; but then came the wonder of getting their lives straightened out as they committed themselves to the Lord. All of the men giving testimony gave the credit to the Lord, knowing they couldn’t do it on their own. Some men were blessed as they got their wives and children back again and some were able to work for Teen Challenge after they graduated for they understand the struggle to get free of addictions. As they sang in the choir and gave glory to God, we all rejoiced with them and felt like standing up and cheering.
None of us should let the enemy hold us back from what the Lord has for our lives. The only way we can defeat the enemy is in the power of the Lord. If we are going through a battle, we must not give up. Or if our loved ones are caught in the web of the enemy, we must pray and use all our spiritual weapons to stand with them, and pray that they get set free. Some have to try it all on their own before they discover that they can’t do it themselves but must surrender to the Lord.
As it says in II Chron. 20:15 and 17 (Message), ”Don’t be afraid; don’t pay any attention to this vandal horde. This is God’s war, not yours…..Just stand firm….and watch God’s saving work for you take shape, Don’t be afraid, don’t waver. March out boldly tomorrow—God is with you.” Let us remember if we humbly ask for God’s help when we go through any kind of struggle, God will fight for us and He always wins!
Challenge for today: When you feel the enemy bearing down on you, look to Jesus and His strength, recognizing the battle is His. He will change your life!
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying the day and especially the sunshine!  This morning I made cookies and bars and went downstairs for Donut day. This afternoon we have Bible Study and then tonight we have a gala for Teen Challenge. Several from our apt. complex are going.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Our words that we speak are very revealing to show what is really in our hearts. Jesus said in Luke 6:24 (ESV), “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
It is interesting that I should read a devotional upon rising  from Lynnette Kittle who shares about the importance of our words; for in the night, I awoke and was in remembrance of a time I hollered (screamed is more like it) at our son when he was about 5 years old and probably had teased his siblings. As I finished my tirade on him a neighbor from church showed up at our door. What could I say, for she heard the whole thing?  She saw first-hand what was in my heart. In the night, what also came to me was David’s words said in Psalm 51:4, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done that which is evil in your sight.” When we sin, we not only hurt others but we sin against God.                                                                                                                 Today, there is so much focus on food, with cooking shows and many movies with story lines revolving around chefs and food. Much attention is given to what we put in our mouths but hardly a word is said of what comes out of our mouths. But in our world today we hear so many hateful and hurtful words that are spoken to destroy others and their reputations, often using social media for all to see. Those harmful words that come out of our mouths cannot be taken back and it also reveals what is in our hearts. Jesus said in Mark 7:20, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him.” Those hurtful words have power to not only destroy others but ourselves.                                                                                                                                                We need to think before we speak and ask the Lord to put a guard on our mouths. If we lash out with our words, we need to not only to ask forgiveness of the ones we have hurt but to repent before the Lord, for we have sinned against Him.                                                                                                                                                                    Challenge for today: Before you press the send button on your computer, pause and pray.

May 5, 2022

Dear  Ones,
Hope you are having a peace-filled day! Al’s sister left after breakfast and is on her way home to Michigan. Enjoyed her visit so much. I am washing and cleaning and and will go to my exercise class this morning. Then crafts this afternoon and a Bible Study.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I just love hearing from many of you as you share stories of signs of God’s presence in your life. It’s like the Lord opens your eyes all of a sudden, to see how He has orchestrated the circumstances that are now bringing blessing to you.
One such instance happened when Al’s sister was here and she shared about the outfit she planned for her granddaughter’s wedding. After going to our daughters for dinner and sauna we stopped on the way home at Share and Care. We found not only a dress she can wear to the wedding, but another dress for the bridal dinner, and a jeweled top that she can wear with a flowing skirt….all for $2.25. Of course, the price was unbelievable but the fact that they fit her perfectly and that we just happened to stop there could only be the Lord.
Another such instance came from a friend who wrote about their experience over the weekend of going to Sioux Falls to trade in her mother’s 2005 Buick and to buy a Chevy Volt, with only 33,000 miles on it. There are very few used electric cars available and a long wait for a new one, so they wanted to get to the dealership before someone else bought it. She writes, “I want to share with you as we experienced God’s hand on us as we drove to Sioux Falls. We drove to Marshall and stayed overnight there. We left on time so that we could easily be in Sioux Falls when the dealership opened at 9 AM. But about 8 miles out of town the engine light went on and the radiator started to pour out steam! We stopped the car immediately…got out the manual and read about what to do. It was imperative to let the radiator and engine cool down. We did a search on my phone and the closest auto repair was about 6 miles away. To speed up the story… we called Dean Automotive Repair and we knew that we had been led to the right person. It was Dean’s shop and he was available to help us. One of the hoses was worn out and busted. He was surprised that he had “stocked the right parts”, but I wasn’t surprised. He had no other customers that morning, he was working on restoring a classic car. He said it would take about 2 hours, but it was only an hour. I told him “he was a Godsend”. Doug gave him a “big tip” in appreciation. He was a delightful person and shared his love of restoring old cars with us. We made it to Sioux Falls and the 2017 Chevy Volt was still available, we bought it and traded in the Buick.”
They made it home with grateful hearts and thanking the Lord with an awareness of how He had orchestrated everything.
I’m sure we have all had experiences when our blinders were suddenly removed and we saw the Lord’s hand in a vivid way touch our life. May we be like David who said in Psalm 16:11 (ESV), You make known to me the path of life: in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures for evermore.”
May the Lord train our eyes to see Him in the many ways He comes to us each day.
Challenge for today: Ask the Lord to increase the sense of His presence with you.
Blessings on  your day and prayers and love, Judy

May 3, 2022

Dear Ones,
Hope you wake to a joy filled day. The house is quiet and I am going to send this out before others get up. Al’s sister is here and we had such a fun day yesterday going to our daughter’s at the Lake, having Finnish Pasty and a hot Sauna, finding treasures at Share and Care, watching movies and having popcorn etc. Today we are going to do some shopping and maybe ice cream at Culvers.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Grow! Grow! Grow!  People are getting itchy to get out in their gardens and plant flowers and veggies and then have the joy of watching them grow. When we lived at the lake, I gardened with a man who was a former farmer and I loved watching everything grow from those small seeds. It seemed like such a miracle when we finally were able to eat the produce that started from something so minute.
Wouldn’t it be sad if they stayed the same and didn’t grow and burst through the soil and become what was potentially in that seed?  But it is more dreadful in a spiritual sense when we come to know the Lord and don’t mature into what God has planned for us. Maybe we don’t take time to read His word and be open to the Holy Spirit or find fellowship with others. It’s like trying to grow without sunshine or the necessary rain and we tend to dry up, just like the seed that Jesus mentioned that fell on the hard path. Or maybe we grow for a little while and then get choked out by weeds or the desires of the world. As long as we live, we will have to face the challenge of the world trying to squeeze in and to rob us of our faith.
Sometimes we had trouble with animals who dug under the fencing of our garden and stole some of our good veggies after they were ripe. Even when we mature as Christians, we must be on guard against the enemy that would lead us away from the Lord. He wants to steal the fruit in our lives and destroy us. We must be vigilant!
Peter says in II Peter 3:18 (NRSV), But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” No matter where we are in our spiritual journey, we have more room to grow. Let us open ourselves to all the ways He wants to feed and nurture us and to grow, grow, grow!
Challenge for today: Take time today to nurture of the life of Jesus within you.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

“Endangered Words”

Recently, I ran across an article that prompted me to say, “This author expresses my very sentiments about masculinity and femininity.”  “Endangered Words” by Diane Woerner is such an article. She writes about “the price we’re paying for vanishing masculinity and femininity.”  What a joy to find a relatively unknown author expressing so clearly and passionately the importance of masculinity and femininity.  Her words are a breath of fresh air for my male soul.  You can read them at www.salvomag.com

Woerner writes, “We live in a bizarre world where we’re told that we can choose whatever sexual identity we like…but behind this, there is the quiet but insistent message that classical masculinity is toxic and classical femininity is really masculinity restrained.”  She has come to believe that “few words are as maligned and yet as precious as masculinity and femininity…we are being deceived into thinking these words are ours to refashion however we will.”

Woerner write that she wants to shout from the mountaintops, “These words don’t belong to us!  They belong to our Creator!” But in our day these very words are “being dismantled.” “Human sexuality needs to be viewed with God at the center, not ourselves. How does God view sexuality, not how we would want to redefine it in our own terms.”  She expresses a profound truth in simple terms when she says, “men can actually be both masculine and feminine” – the same for women.  “Masculinity and femininity are essentially defined “by their roles or assignments.” Both find their “fullest sense” in each other.

Going deeper, Woerner writes, “The Bible clearly describes Christ as masculine, [but] his church as feminine…God intends the proper relationship between human husbands and wives to serve as a visible representation of the divine/human relationship.”  She gives the following example: “Men are masculine in their relationship with their wives but feminine in their relationship with Christ.  Women are feminine in relationship to both their husbands and Christ, but masculine in their relationship with their young children.”

Woerner’s hope is that her “thoughts and ideas might seep deeply into your mind and heart, not only to give you some defense against the lies, but also to provide a more solid grounding as you…accept your assignment as a man and woman and thereby discover the joy of becoming aligned with the amazing design of our wise and good Creator.”

C.S. Lewis has reminded us that “gender is a reality and a more fundamental reality than sex.  Sex is, in fact, merely the adaptation to organic life of a fundamental polarity which divides all created beings.”  Gender, masculine and feminine, have a transcendent nature that points to God, who (as Leanne Payne wrote) is so masculine that we are all feminine in relation to Him.

I intend to fight for the biblical validity of these words (masculine and feminine).  My masculine soul began to be renewed and restored when I first began to digest Payne’s teaching on the masculine soul.

Two observations from Woerner’s article continue to motivate me to be a voice crying out in our dysfunctional culture wilderness.  The first is that every man has both masculine and feminine tendencies within himself.  While the masculine, being proactive is more prominent, each man also needs to learn how to respond (feminine) to the voice of God, that is, being tough and tender, or being a lion and lamb.

Secondly, husbands and wives serve “as a visible representation of the divine/human relationship” (see Eph. 5:31-32).  Men, this is where the real spiritual work takes place.  May God help us to live out this relationship with our wives.
