Devotions from Judy’s heart

Isn’t it wonderful when we can live simply? We find we are at peace and content with whatever comes our way; and we are thankful for what we have and know that we don’t need more to be happy. That is freedom in simplicity! Think of what Adam and Eve had in the Garden of Eden before they wanted more. Life was so beautiful and simple and yet they thought they needed to know more and ate of the tree of life. That resulted in a big change to their lives as they were ushered out of the garden. When we look at what others have and think we need more and more, life becomes complicated and messy. But when we have gratitude for what we have been given, we can lay back in peace. Our biggest problem is our self. We want to keep feeding it, giving into its desires and we become self-absorbed. We may also feel we have to do more and more and soon we may be addicted to activity and it is go, go, go and do, do, do!  But if we choose to simply love God more and are willing to die to ourself, life becomes simple again and there is a calmness even in the midst of adverse circumstances we may be going through. When we surrender and rest in God’s hand, we can live in the present moment and have His grace and strength for whatever comes. None of us know what that will be, only God has it mapped out and knows the future. But we can trust Him and be restful before Him. Doesn’t that take a load off of us for it is prideful that we would even think we can control our lives anyway. We may also find we have less words as we become quiet and listening to what the Lord has to say rather than trying to make things happen. Let us live simply and enjoy each moment. As it says in Isaiah 26:3 (Amplified), “You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind (both inclination and its character) is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.” Challenge for today: Live simply and celebrate where God has you right now.Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Hope you are having a good day. I made a chicken dish and then went downstairs this morning for coffee and choc covered raspberries. This afternoon we have several errands to run and also do our walk even though it seems to be mighty hot each day.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
I made it! A month ago I started putting fluorouracil ointment on my face every night to treat precancer areas on my face; it resulted in my face being red in many spots and blisters on my lips. Not a pretty sight! It has taken patience not to quit in the middle of this month-long chore, but only the knowledge that it has been killing the atypical cells and allowing the healthy skin to survive has kept me continuing. Quitting would have sabotaged the results and would have wasted all this time and effort for nothing. Patience is not an easy gift to receive and one which the Lord teaches all of us on a continual basis. We can learn from the butterfly as it goes through its stages of egg, larva, pupa and to finally reach the adult stage and come forth as a beautiful butterfly. As we hold the vision of the result, we patiently endure the various stages. We can’t just jump from A to Z! One gal in my exercise class said she was praying for patience and another gal quickly told her she better mean what she said as difficulties and trying times are ahead when you pray that! But if we endure the hard things patiently, we will come forth with treasures, just as the children of Israel who left Egypt after so many hard years were laden down with silver and gold etc. If we endure and practice patience, we will be given treasures of wisdom and faith. David said in Psalm 37:7a(ESV), “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” We need to slow down and walk patiently as we wait for God’s timing. Apostle Paul also tells us in Rom. 12:12, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” He went through so many trying times and didn’t give up. We don’t get to choose the circumstance to learn patience but the Lord knows what will help us grow and cause us to draw close to Him.
Challenge for today: When trying times come, pray and be patient to learn what God is teaching you.

Dear Ones,
Hope you had a great weekend. We enjoyed having Al’s sister here and time to share together. Today I made bars, went to Aldi’s and my exercise class. We are walking on these hot afternoons even though some days we are the only ones on the trail.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Do we live our daily lives in gratitude for our salvation and all the blessings God has poured out on us?  When we wake in the morning, do we welcome the day as another opportunity to love and serve Him? I wonder if our prayers are more about asking for things rather than seeking ways to give back and thanking Him.  Some give to the Lord out of the motivation of “giving to get” for the Lord has promised if we sow bountifully, we will reap bountifully! An English teacher, Keith Gogan, writes that our motivation for giving should be selfless and pro bono. (Latin, “for the good”) In fact as Christians, shouldn’t all our giving be pro bono?! Recently a friend responded to one of my prior devotions on speaking the truth, and not holding back, like Samuel when he had to tell Eli what God was going to do to his sons. She told of the struggle in her own life to speak up as she was afraid to hurt other people’s feelings. She wrote, “Many years ago after attending both of our church services and Sunday School I was feeling hungry.  I wanted to eat something, but I knew our cupboards were bare.  It was like that after Dad died.  I found myself walking to Nymans Grocery store.  My idea was to ask Mr.  Nyman if I could charge some groceries.  I was shy and did not want to ask him, but I did walk around the store and planned what I would get if he said yes.  It was hard and I felt so embarrassed even to ask him.  The store closed at 1:00 pm and church had gotten over at Twelve noon.  I walked around this little store a number of times and waited for whatever customers were in the store to leave.  I knew that if the owner said no I would be unable to ever go back there. With five minutes until closing with all of the other customers gone it was time to go. I could not move and then standing at the back of the store I heard the words, “Helen go.” I looked around me thinking it was my Dad, but I knew it wasn’t.  I forged ahead, asked Mr. Nyman and he said yes. I ran and picked out some bread, apple sauce, coffee for my Mom and cream for her also.  On the way home I wondered what my Mom would think.  I charged the food and now Mom would have to pay for it.  When she came home later that night she smiled and wrapped her arms around me.  I am thankful that I responded to Gods prompting and need to listen carefully and then act.” I read this with tears in my eyes as she was a friend and we even double dated as we became teens; but I didn’t know the extent of her poverty. My dad often gave her and I a ride to school but I know my folks and I would have been over to her house in an instant if we thought she was in need and pro bono for sure! We missed an opportunity to give back to the Lord but may all of our hearts be open to the joy of giving to others in whatever ways we can and out of gratitude.
Challenge for today: Look for opportunities to share your love for the Lord Pro Bono!
Blessings on your week and prayers and love, Judy

He Will Do Nothing

The prophets of the Old Testament continually warned against false prophets.  In our day these are the voices that assure us that all will be fine with the direction of our nation, even as we disregard our Creator.  Listen to Jeremiah: “They have lied about the Lord; they said, ‘He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine.  The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be done to them” (Jer. 5:12-13).

“The prophets are all windbags.  They speak nothing but nonsense” (Jer. 5:13 – Message).  These false prophets with their deceptive words were simply full of hot air.  It reminds me of the “talking heads” predicting good outcomes for following their counsels. They give the people a sense of false security.  “They keep saying to those who despise me, ‘The Lord says: you will have peace.’  And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, ‘No harm will come to you’” (Jer. 23:17).  This is what people want to hear.

Jeremiah complained about these false prophets.  They were to blame for the apathy of the people.  “Oh, Sovereign Lord, look.  The prophets are telling them that you said, ‘You will not experience war or suffer famine.’ I will give you lasting peace and prosperity.”  (Jer. 14:13 NET).  The word for peace (shalom) “refers both to peace from war and security from famine and plague” (NET).

The people were being conditioned to believe God will do nothing and not interfere in the affairs of the nation.  We read in Zeph. 1:12 of God finding those who seem to be “entrenched” in their indifference to God.  “At that time, I will search through Jerusalem with lamps.  I will punish the people who are entrenched in their sin, those who think to themselves, ‘The Lord neither rewards nor punishes’” (NET).

“Entrenched” can be translated as those “who thicken on their sediment.”  If wine is allowed to remain on the sediment too long, it will thicken into syrup. “The image suggests that the people described here were complacent in their sinful behavior and interpreted the delay in judgment as divine apathy” (NET).  The cultural narrative in our day conditions even some of the faithful to believe that God is not active in history, expressed in the sentiment of the Psalmist, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees” (Ps 10: 11).

Men, don’t allow yourself to become complacent by allowing the current cultural narrative lull you to sleep spiritually.   There is no doubt that the spirit of Antichrist is becoming stronger in our day.  Listen to Paul’s warning.  “You’ll also remember that I told you the Antichrist is being held back until just the right time.  That doesn’t mean that the spirit of anarchy is not now at work.  It is, secretly and underground.  But the time will come when the Antichrist will no longer be held back but will be let loose” (II Thess. 2:6-7 – Message).

Men, I want to be vigilant, with my ear open to what is going on in the culture, while being alert to the sound of the trumpet.  Be prepared for that day. “Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill.  Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming” (Joel 2:1).

As God is mocked, as his purpose for humanity is dismissed, and as ultimate reality – as expressed in his Word – is neglected, our heavenly Father will not allow such conditions to exist for the sake of his glory. Get ready.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying the sunny weekend but staying cool. It’s in the 90’s here today but 100 when we came home from the lake yesterday. We had a wonderful time with Al’s sister with so much sharing, insights, laughter, coffee and more coffee.. and now she is on her way back to Michigan. I am doing some catch up now but with a full heart.
Devotions from Judy’s heart
Lately I have felt the Lord trying to get my attention and to focus on Him as my Good Shepherd.  I have come across scriptures that seem to stand out from my Bible reading and have sensed He has much He wants to teach me of His love for the sheep.  recently I was in Luke 15 as Jesus responded to the Pharisees and scribes when they complained that Jesus welcomed sinners and ate with them. But Jesus told them the Shepherd would gladly leave 99 sheep to look for the one lost sheep and would lay the lamb on His shoulder when He finds it. Luke 15: 6b-7(NRSV) says, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost. Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” When we were a lost sheep, the Lord searched for us and pursued us and forgave us and welcomed us into the fold. But I wonder if we have forgotten what it was like when we felt lost and apart from Him. For so many years I have known the Lord, but I also remember those days of wanting to give my all to him but holding back…it was not a peaceful feeling and like living in two worlds. But what joy when responding to Him one night at camp and I took the leap; no longer a sheep hiding from my shepherd but found by Him. Around us are people lost and trying to find happiness in a world that can never give them what they are searching for. They don’t know the Shepherd will feed and satisfy their hunger, protect them and nurture them, give them a sense of peace and rest.  Do we have, do have, a heart that loves enough to risk what their reaction might be, to point the way to the Shepherd? To tell them they need only confess their sins and ask the Shepherd to forgive them and to surrender their lives into His loving hands?  Let us ask the Lord for compassionate hearts and a boldness to proclaim Him by the way we live and by our words.
Challenge for today: Think of those you know that do not yet know the Lord and pray for opportunities to share Him.
Blessings on your weekend and prayers and love, Judy

Dear Ones,
Happy Weekend to you! We are enjoying time with Al’s sister, Ann Marie, and going to the lake today to see our daughter Ann Marie and all the renovation they have done to our former home. We spent last evening sharing and catching up and looking forward to another day of it.  It’s going to be a hot day in the 90’s!

Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! Today it is so difficult to know who is telling the truth and who to believe. We hear opposite points of view and wonder what is the truth? But one thing we do know that God Himself is truth and does not lie and what He says we can believe. All that is found written in the Bible we can believe and trust. I was reading what Ines Velasquez-McBryde had to say about Samuel of the Old Testament on Crosswalk.com. One night when Samuel was a young boy, he was lying down in the temple near the Ark of God and heard his name called. He thought it was Eli the priest calling him and he went to him to find out what he wanted. This happened again and Eli told him, it was not him but to go back to bed. But the third time Eli realized God must be speaking and told Samuel if He calls again to say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.” When God did call the next time, He revealed what he was going to do not only to Israel but also to Eli’s family. His sons had had been blaspheming God and Eli did nothing to correct them. Samuel must have been afraid to tell the truth when Eli asked him the next morning what God said. But he told Eli what God had spoken and the punishment his family was to suffer. Not an encouraging word but Eli told Samuel not to hold back and to tell it all. So Samuel learned at an early age to speak what God gave him, even when afraid. Now just speaking the truth is only part of what we are called to do, for the second part is to tell it in the right way. Ines himself first struggled with speaking the truth and often did it with harshness and devastated others. His boss helped him learn to speak the truth in a way that would build others up and not tear them down. It is something we all need to learn and practice for sometimes the truth gets lost and ignored by the delivery of the messenger. Paul told the Ephesian church in Eph. 4:15 (ESV), Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ.” When we speak truth we are to be humble and speak with grace, remembering we have many things that need correcting in our own lives. After speaking truth, it is good to ask ourselves if others are left knowing they are loved, no matter what the message was that was given.
Challenge for today: Before speaking the truth, humble yourself and ask God to help you say it in love.

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying this day. I cleaned the apt. and went down for donuts and soon Al will lead the Bible Study here. Then we are looking forward to his sister arriving from Michigan. Please pray for Jodi’s family as the funeral is today in CA and her dad will be doing the service. The sudden death of Jodi’s husband is hard and they all need prayers. Thank you!

We all need rest for our souls and the Lord invites us to come away with Him and to get refreshed. Doesn’t that sound wonderful to our ears? Maybe we have just finished a project at work that took untold hours of our time; or maybe we have been entertaining guest for many days, along with our other duties and we are tired. Perhaps the disciples felt a little that way as they returned from a time of ministry and reported all the things that they had done and taught. They were excited to share the results of their mission with Jesus and probably exhausted as it said they didn’t even have time to eat. Jesus’ response to them was the invitation in Mark 6:31, “Come away with me to a quiet place and rest a while.” Yes, we might even call it a holy rest and we all have times when we need to cease working and doing, and just spend some restful time with the Lord.  Jesus has given us a special day to do that for and He initiated the Sabbath day as a day of rest; after 6 days of creating, He rested on the 7th day. In Exodus 20:8-9 (God’s Word) He says, “Remember the day of worship by observing it as a holy day. You have six days to do all your work.”  There is a time to quit working and to we can keep the Sabbath Day as we spend time in worship, meeting with others who know Him, reflecting, meditating, and maybe just having a silent time. If we did that regularly I think we would find rest for our souls. Perhaps we will even find more joy in our work, more creativity and motivation to do our best. I grew up in a home where Sunday was all about going to church, not working, relaxing and getting refueled for the week.  We often had company for dinner and mom prepared all she could the day before so we could just enjoy  fellowshipping with the guests. Then after the company left there was likely a nap. Too often today, we try to squeeze in as much work as we can on Sunday and never find that place of rest. The Lord wants relationship with us more than He wants our work. As we spend time with Him, we will find the work flows with greater ease and our hearts get lighter. If Jesus rested, why not us?!
Challenge for today: Take a holy rest and spend time letting the Lord refresh you.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy

Devotions from Judy’s heart
Isn’t wonderful to know that when we put things in God’s hands, He will take care of it? We don’t have to spend time needlessly worrying but only to listen if we are to be part of the solution in some way. The bottom line is that our burden is lifted because our dependency is on the Lord, not us. A friend recently shared how he had several complex decisions that had to be made. As we know, lake property has many regulations that must be followed, and he was getting stressed out by trying to figure this all out on his own.   He had issues of a rain garden, fire pit, excavation and the property line. These all had different set back rules with additional specific requirements. He asked God to make this complex problem simple. When the DNR person came out at his request, he simply told our friend, “Put all of these details in my hands and it will be just fine.” He had the power and authority and was an answer to the prayer of our friend. Now our friend could just relax.  That’s the way it is for all Christians who commit everything into God’s hands. They can live in hope and have a solid anchor to hold them fast when strong winds blow.  As it says in Heb 6:19 (TLB), “This certain hope of being saved is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls, connecting us with God himself.” We have God’s presence and power to help us with anything that concerns us. A hymn comes to my mind….

“Though the angry surges roll
On my tempest driven soul,
I am peaceful, for I know,
Wildly though the winds may blow,
I’ve an anchor safe and sure,
That can evermore endure.
And it holds, my anchor holds:
Blow your wildest, then, O gale,
On my bark so small and frail;
By His grace I shall not fail,
For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.”

Our burdens belong in God’s hands and when the adverse winds blow, we are held safe and secure.
Challenge for today: Give all your concerns to God and thank Him that you are anchored in Him

Dear Ones,
Hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunny weather. Later this week  it is going to get very hot with 96 degrees here.Emoji This morning I made Starch free cookies, a veggie dish, egg dishes and got the rest of the blinds dusted. My face continues to look worse from the ointment I have to put on so I am looking rather scary these days!

We all carry memories in our hearts! When we ponder and remember things in our past, it often breathes new life into our present. Such was the case over the weekend when we are at our family gathering around the campfire. After we roasted hot dogs and marsh mellows, my cousin Terry lead us in a time of remembering her mom (and my favorite aunt) who went home to the Lord in November. We all shared favorite memories of her of how she touched our lives and expressed God’s love.  There was much laughter at the gutsy things she did in raising her 8 children and fun times and parties! Her daughter also shared how her mom had called her in the middle of the night and was hemorrhaging. She rushed to her Assisted Living apartment and discovered her mom was in big trouble. Her son who is a doctor got on the phone and asked her if she was willing to go to the hospital as she had expressed before that she wanted to die at home and not be hospitalized. But since it was Covid time and she had not seen her 8 kids and many grandkids for some time, her mind was changed and she consented to go. She was rushed there and in ICU for some time while she recovered; when she was discharged, she was not up to living alone. That’s when Terry, who had just quit her job the day before offered to take her mom to her apartment and give her care for several months until her death. God provided a way for all of her children and grandchildren and other relatives and friends to spend time with her and say their good-byes. Her memory lives on in all of us as she shared God’s love and helped us to feel valued and cherished. In the Bible we are often told to remember, just like the children of Israel who God brought out of Egypt and through the Red Sea etc. They were to tell their children of God’s marvelous acts on their behalf. We also have Mary’s example of pondering the angel’s words in her heart. Each one of us have stories to rehearse with our children and others, just as we did around the campfire. We all have a sacred journey to share as we remember the many circumstances God has brought us through, times when His presence was so real. Of course, no day is without His presence and at night before going to sleep, it is a good practice to review our day of how we experienced Him. Let us not forget but remember and share as David said in Psalm 143:5 (Amplified), “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I ponder the work of Your hands.”
Challenge for today: “Spend some time remembering the good things God has done and thank Him; share with others when given an opportunity.
Blessings on your day and prayers and love, Judy
