  • Dear Ones,
I have been enjoying my “retirement” from writing daily although I miss hearing from many of you. One reader who Al and I have come to know along with his wife when we first moved here, wrote the following poem and gave permission for me to share with you. For others who may also want to write to whispers65@yahoo.com I will always ask your permission before I put what you have written on the web site.
    “Step into my memory:
In the depths of winter, my mother was driving when our car spun out of control, spinning counterclockwise down a steep bank toward a river. I was only five, but the memory remains clear. I remember my mother crying, “God, help us! Save my little boy and me!”
A dead tree stump stopped the car.
My mother opened the back door, pulled me out, held me, kissed me, and told me how much she loved me. Then she said, “Everything has a purpose. God placed the tree stump there for my little boy and me
    THE SEED STILL ECHOES
    In the depths of winter,
my mother’s car spun out of control
hurtling counterclockwise down a steep bank,
    the river rushing closer.
I still hear her cry: “God, help us! Save my little boy and me!”
A dead tree stump stopped the 1948 Chevy.
Hurried from the back seat, held, and kissed,
I was told that everything has a purpose.
Only now do I wonder about a seed
    that fell a century before—
    landing on fertile ground,
    breaking open in darkness,
growing into a tree that for decades gave shade,
a home for birds, shelter from wind and rain.
    Then the tree died.
What remained was a rotting stump
with a crown of crowded roots,
    silent through many seasons,
    waiting beneath winter snow.
    On that near-fatal day,
    those unseen roots anchored us.
A life that had ended saved two lives.
What seemed broken became a shield.
What seemed abandoned was still holding.
And in the dead of winter,
    I hear something of spring.
    I begin to wonder:
What other seeds lie silently in the dark,
waiting for the moment their purpose is revealed
    I do not understand.
But I believe the seed still echoes—
as it has echoed in me
    for seventy-five years
    God bless,
    David”
As I read this today, I thought all of us may be reminded of things that happened in our lives that seemed to have no purpose at the time, but just wait… one day we may know, if not in this life, in eternity.
